Pat I: Intoduction Pat I: Intoduction The LISG (Lase Intefeometic Senso fo Glass fibe) is specially built fo optical fibe measuement and fibe defect check in poduction towes and laboatoies. It uses the intefeometic finges patten poduced by a fibe when placed in a lase beam. It gives a vey high accuacy and high speed absolute diamete measuement. The measuement is fibe position and vibation independent. The measuement pinciple allows ulta fine ailine detection, down to 0.3um. Since 2008 spinning and non ciculaity measuement have been added in the instument featues. The LISG is the only instument able to show the eal time pocess pefomances. It offes the fibe poduces the capability to cetify the whole poduction within the specification. The LISG instument uses the latest technology to give the maximum pefomance. Main Advantages Absolute diamete measuement at vey high esolution and vey high speed. Fibe measuement vibations independent. Real time toleances checking. Continuous fibe defect check (bubbles, paticles) Vey fine ailine detection. Spinning fequency and pofile measuement. Non ciculaity measuement (only in case of spinning) Fibe position and vibation measuement Spool length speed computing. Compact and hadened industial instument. Local display of measues and paametes. CERSA-MCI develops and poduces also complementay high pefomance measuement instuments fo optical fibe poduction, at high dawing speed like: NCTM fo Glass fibe dawing tension measuement. CM5 fo Coated fibe diamete, Lump & Neck detection, intenal defect detection and asymmety measuement. LDST-0400 fo Glass o Coated fibe diamete measuement. AIR fo Ailine fibe detection. 11 Pat IV: Measues and pinciple 1.2 Events It is a paticula phenomenon that is detected by the instument. Events ae detected in eal time, dated (5ms accuacy) and located (fibe length). Each event is also chaacteized by its extemum value. Hee below is an example of high speed diamete fluctuation which exceeds the toleances. Hee below is the list of events tansfeed fom the instument to CIM: Event unit Desciption Status Diamete Non Cic. access level Geneal status of the instument. Vesion : 14.0.0

Pat IV: Measues and pinciple 1.3 Real time scopes Because the measuement fequency of the instument is vey high, it is impossible to tansfe all measues in eal time to the compute though RS232. The instument stoes the main measues continuously in intenal buffes of 500 points each. This function is called Real Time Scope. Those buffes can be watched though CIM. Only few buffes pe seconds can be watched, because of communication constaints. The sampling peiod of each buffe can be modified, depending on the time scale you want to analyse. Those tools ae vey useful fo pocess analysis to qualify the stability, the egulation pefomance, and display some paticula effects. The F.F.T. pocessing shows specific oscillations. We ecommend stongly to the pocess enginee to use those tools fo undestanding and impovement of the manufactuing pocess. 2 Diamete 2.1 Optical pinciple Using a lase beam, LISG poduces an intefeometic signal depending on glass diamete and glass index. 2.2 Intefeomety scope This scope shows 1 signal: CCD intefeomety axis 1: Light enegy vs pixel. It shows the signal acquied by the CCD. This scope is used fo maintenance pupose to check at the signal quality. Results displayed in the scope: Diamete: the diamete measue coesponding to the displayed signal. Status: the alam code coesponding to the displayed signal. Amplitude: the finges amplitude. This value should be aound 90 fo 125µm fibe, othewise the instument is not good conditions fo measuement. LIS-G use's manual Vesion : 14.0.0

Pat IV: Measues and pinciple 2.3 Real time diamete scope This scope shows 1 signal: Real time diamete intefeomety axis 1: Diamete vs time. It shows eal time diamete fluctuations. This scope is inteesting fo pocess study and analysis. It can show high speed phenomenon, such as spinning o diamete oscillations. The following paamete can be adjusted: Sampling peiod [ms]: Repesents the duation between 2 stoages inside the buffe. It is used to adapt the time scale. Minimum value: 0.020ms. 3 Spinning and Non ciculaity 3.1 Pinciple and limitation Spinning measuement is based on high pefomance diamete measue. Featues and limitations The spinning algoithm is able to measue at low fequencies with small invesion peiods (peiod duing which fibe otation diection do not change). Minimal Numbe of tuns in invesion peiod: Nb_tuns_invesion_peiod = spinning_fequency [t/s] * invesion peiod [s] > 16 [t] Minimal Non ciculaity: If the non ciculaity is less than 0.2 µm peak to peak, we ae within the limits of the esolution and epeatability of the instument. Coect pocess stability: The needs in tems of diamete stability ae citical. We estimate that the fequency and amplitude of noise signals in diamete evolution have to espect this fomula: Noise fequency [t/s] * Noise amplitude [µm] < (1/k) * ESM [t/s] * Non Ciculaity [um] With k = 8 in minimal value and ecommended value k = 16 and ESM: estimation of maximal spinning fequency. Due to the specificity of each fibe poduce, an intensive assistance is povided by CERSA fo spinning measuement analyse and optimization. Toleances paametes Vesion : 14.0.0

Pat IV: Measues and pinciple The nominal value of measued spinning fequency coesponds to the maximum value of the spinning fequency in one invesion peiod. The out of highe o lowe toleances ae tiggeed by consideing this value. 3.2 Real time spinning scope This scope shows 1 signal: Real time spinning: Spinning fequency vs time. It shows eal time spinning fluctuations. This scope is inteesting fo pocess study and analysis. It can show PMD system malfunctions and time-fequency-tuns unbalances. The following paamete can be adjusted: Sampling peiod [ms]: Repesents the duation between 2 stoages inside the buffe. It is used to adapt the time scale. Minimum value: 0.100ms. 4 Fine ailine detection 4.1 Pinciple Based on Intefeomety scope analysis, LISG is able to detect vey thin Ailine (minimum detectable size is aound 0.3µm). 4.2 Goup and Registe mechanism Because of Spinning otation, Ailine and Defect detection can be not continuous. Fo this eason LISG implement a Goup mechanism. Paamete "Ailine goup max. time" o "Ailine goup max. length" will set the maximum time o distance between one detection and the pevious one to goup it. If speed signal is connected, LISG will use length infomation, othewise it will use time infomation. Moe, because it can happen that small Ailine o Defect Real Time Detection ae useless to LIS-G use's manual Vesion : 14.0.0

Pat IV: Measues and pinciple detect, it is possible to not egiste such detection and only Ailine o Defect with a sufficient duation o length. Paamete "Ailine eg. min. time" o "Ailine eg. min. length" will set the minimal time o length to egiste an Ailine. Same mechanism exist fo Defect detection with Paametes "Defect goup max. time", "Defect goup max. length", "Defect eg. min. time" and "Defect eg. min. length". And because consequences ae the same when an Ailine o a Defect is detected, LISG make a fusion of those 2 events line in one: "Def. Big" event line. 5 Supeficial and intenal defect detection High speed defect detection is based on the high speed Intefeomety signal analysis. In case of supeficial o intenal defect (including big ailine), the finges signal is distubed, then it geneates: A change of the digital output state. Refe to Digital I/O chapte. An event in CIM softwae. This system is configued by CERSA only. 6 Position and vibation 6.1 Pinciple Fibe position is measued by 2 position sensos: X and Y. Those sensos analyse the light diffused by the fibe and povide an accuacy of +/-0.1mm. The measuement ange is limited to +/-2.0mm on both sensos. The vibation fequency measuement comes fom the spectum analysis of the Y position signal (moe sensitive than X). It can be measued only if oscillations ae stable and lage enough. Vesion : 14.0.0

Pat IV: Measues and pinciple 6.2 Vibation scope This scope shows 2 signals: F.F.T. of the X o Y position: Enegy vs fequency. It shows the nomalized Fast Fouie Tansfom of the X o Y position signal.. X o Y position signal: X o Y axis position vs time. It shows fibe position measued by the X o Y position senso. This scope is inteesting fo vibation analysis. When the instument is placed between the funace and the fist coating die, it can display the natual fibe vibation which is an image of the dawing tension. Results displayed in the scope: F.F.T. DC enegy: epesents the F.F.T. level of the DC pat (Fequency = 0Hz) F.F.T. peak enegy: epesents the F.F.T. level of the main peak. Fequency [Hz]: the vibation fequency value of the detected F.F.T. peak. The following paametes can be adjusted: Sampling peiod [ms]: Repesent the duation between 2 stoages inside the buffe. It is used to adapt the time scale. Minimum value: 1.000ms. Min window [Hz]: The minimum fequency used to seach fo a F.F.T. peak. Max window [Hz]: The maximum fequency used to seach fo a F.F.T. peak. Min peak enegy: The minimum enegy to be consideed as a peak. Min peak level: The minimum nomalized peak level to be consideed as a peak. Max peak width[hz]: If a peak is detected, its width (efeing to the min peak level) should not exceed the max peak width to be consideed as a eal peak. Flag Px Py: Switch between X o Y position signal (Flag Px Py = 0: X position signal is used; Flag Px Py = 1: Y position signal is used) LIS-G use's manual Vesion : 14.0.0

In case of you eally need to coect the measue, you have to follow this pocedue: 1. Wait fo the tempeatue stabilization fo at least 5 minutes. 2. Be sue of the cleanness of the optical system. 3. You must have a standad glass fibe. The fibe has to be vey cicula (non-ciculaity less than 0.05µm) and must be measued by an extenal accuate offline measuement system. 4. You must set the fibe Cladding index of you standad glass fibe at the tempeatue of calibation. 5. Clean pefectly this fibe with IPA (IsoPopylic Alcohol). 6. Place this fibe (without touching the stipped pat) in the cente of the instument. Be sue that the fibe position is aound 0.0mm (+/- 0.2mm). 7. Activate the Calibation mode using CIM softwae. 8. Compae the diamete value given by LISG and the value given by the extenal instument. 9. If needed, adjust the Diamete offset to each the taget value. Impotant: If offset > 0.15µm, we ecommend you to contact ou technical suppot fo futhe analysis. Vesion : 14.0.0

Pat VII: Installation on the line Pat VII: Installation on the line 1 Mounting You do not need any fine adjustable suppot. A single hoizontal metal plate, 3 mm thick, with 4x 4.20mm holes would be sufficient. You must eseve the possibility of a manual adjustment to adjust the position of the instument on the fibe axis. Constaint of hoizontality : The instument must be pefectly placed hoizontal (pependicula to the fibe). Using the top white cove as a efeence, you must adjust the hoizontality with accuacy of +/-0.25. This constains is absolutely necessay to have the instuments in good conditions fo accuate measuements (Diamete, Ailine, ). Because the glass fibe is an impotant heating souce, instument has to be positioned afte cooling pipe. The intenal tempeatue must be checked (55 degees maximum) with CIM softwae duing fibe dawing, especially at the highest poduction speed. Remak: At vey high poduction speed the glass fibe itself becomes an impotant heating souce. Ai supply is necessay to maintain the intenal tempeatue and ensue the behavio of electonic devices. Refe to Ai supply chapte. 2 Effect of glass index and tempeatue LIS-G uses the glass index to compute de diamete. The knowledge of this paamete is essential fo the measuement accuacy. The sensitivity due to the index change is 0,02 µm / 0,001. ( If you knows the index with an accuacy of +/- 0.001, the measuement eo will be +/-0,02µm). The fuse silica index changes with the tempeatue : 1.28*10-5/ c. (If tempeatue inceases fo +1000 C, index inceases fo +1.28*10-2 then diamete inceases fo +0.256µm.) But when the LIS is vey close to the funace, the tempeatue of the fibe at the LIS position is vey depending on the fibe speed (depending on the cooling coefficient). At stat-up, the speed is low, then the tempeatue is low too. But when the speed inceases, the fibe tempeatue goes up. We ecommend to evaluate the fibe tempeatue at the position of the LIS at high-speed in ode to evaluate to coect cladding index. Refe to Measue paametes chapte fo cladding index configuation unde CIM. LIS-G use's manual Vesion : 14.0.0

Pat VII: Installation on the line 3 Alignment All measues ae independent of the fibe position while the fibe stays within 1.5mm adius. We ecommend to keep the fibe within a 1.0mm cicle adius. Out of a 1.5mm cicle adius, the measuement is not possible. Vesion : 14.0.0
