THE COLLEGE OF ARTS The College of the Arts is an interdisciplinary learning environment that promotes creativity and scholarship. Founded in 1998, the three schools of music, fine arts, and performing arts offer undergraduate and graduate programs that bring together a wide range of creative disciplines. The innovative inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary projects allow advancement in opportunities, collaborations, and accomplishments. The College of Arts is committed to becoming the center of creative and academic excellence, and has been recognized internationally for its innovative and eminent works. The College of Arts strives to nurture the development of creative and independent students who value being engaged and collaborative during their creative process. In addition to generating relevant, challenging ideas and building a strong knowledge base to hone their research skills, today s students should also possess the ability to collaborate and work effectively as members of a team. We support and guide our students towards achievement and success in all of these areas. We provide students with opportunities to engage in various experiences, such as teaching and participating in special events and projects. The College of Arts provides excellent facilities such as the Concert Hall, Art Gallery, Grand Theater, Black Box Theater, dance studios, and a film studio fully equipped with up-to-date technology; these facilities foster an environment where students on campus are able to elevate their performance. Students also have opportunities to develop their international prospects through exchange programs organized with partner institutions overseas. These programs provide our students with experiences guaranteed to expand and elaborate their own ideas and perspectives, and help each of them grow as international artists.
The School of Music offers various courses and extra-curricular activities that help students develop their artistry and improve one s musicianship. consists of four majors-voice, Piano, Orchestral Instruments, and Compositionwhich regularly work in close cooperation with each other. Emphasis is placed on the development of one s creativity and performance skills while various academic courses are also promoted. As one of the most comprehensive and renowned institutions in Korea, the School of Music plays a key role in educating performers, scholars, and music educators. The 400 students who study at the school, benefit from the breadth and intensity of its academic program. aims to develop the students musical abilities and skills, preparing one for the professional music world. Performance guidance and mentorship by the department faculties help improve one s musicianship while courses in liberal arts and music theory provoke students to attain a broad spectrum of academic knowledge. Prior to taking advanced music courses, the department requires fulfillment of prerequisite courses in basic music theory such as harmony, counterpoint, ear-training and sight-singing. After the completion of such foundation course requirements, students may take advanced courses, deepening their comprehension of music theory and performance practice.
Students are given various opportunities to perform in public both on and off campus during the academic year. Solo recitals, chamber music concerts, orchestra concerts, concerto performances, operas, and composition concerts are regularly held in a variety of venues. The school s facilities include a concert hall, wellequipped rehearsal rooms for chorus and orchestra, rehearsal space for chamber music, and about 80 practice rooms. We strive to nurture the musical growth of each student so that they may embark on successful professional careers at the highest level. 8 Voice Department The Classical Voice Department places emphasis on studio instruction which guides the students acquisition of professional skills and techniques through personalized instruction and mentoring. In addition, the department hones the students talents through courses such as: Life and Career Design, Acting and Dancing. students discover their talents and improve their comprehension of musical fluency. The course Opera Production and Practice and The Understanding of Performing Arts helps students to become better professional singers by enabling them to understand the performing arts on both a higher and more creative level. By exploring various courses in voice, students gain confidence as well as a sense of professional identity as a singer. The subject Chorus and Ensemble helps the Events and Activities : The Voice Department offers a number of concerts all year round, which provide students opportunities to experience a variety of musical styles in various languages. Of these, the Opera Gala and The Night of Arts Songs are the most prominent. One fully-staged opera is held every two years in collaboration with the Kookmin Philharmonic Orchestra. Performance opportunities in operas are created to allow students to collaborate with internationally distinguished alumni. These activities foster a comprehensive training environment and provide an opportunity to develop a network with renowned professional musicians.

12 Piano Department The Piano Department aims to cultivate the musicianship of students by giving importance to both artistic and academic education. Through the educational experience, the students can nurture their individuality as an artist and their ability to collaborate with fellow musicians. The coursework comprises a large performance repertories - in addition to studying traditional works from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, students are encouraged to explore early keyboard music as well as contemporary and experimental literature. The department provides many performance opportunities for the students at various venues, including concerto concerts, solo recitals and chamber ensembles. The degree programs offered at the Piano Department are the bachelor s, master s and doctorate program, and the specific goals and instructions for each program are reflected in the curriculum with consideration to the professional careers students pursue. With the dedication and support from the faculty members, the educational experience at the Piano Department will broaden one s artistic range and form a firm musical foundation for each student. Events and Activities : The Kookmin Piano Festival is an annual performance project of the Piano Department. Each year, the festival presents concerts and academic seminars under a specific subject, such as the music of Debussy, the fin-de-siècle Russian music and opera transcriptions on the piano. As an opportunity to understand and experience music in depth, faculty members and students participate in performances of various genres of music, consisting of solo and chamber repertoires. Also, renowned artists and scholars are invited to perform and give lectures. For instance, the festival of 2015 was dedicated to the music of Beethoven the lectures and performances of the complete set of Beethoven s Violin Sonatas were presented.

17 Orchestral Instruments Department The Orchestral Instruments Department consists of strings, winds, brass, and percussion majors. It offers a variety of learning experiences to assist musicians in understanding the fundamentals of art and humanities while developing one s musicianship. Renowned faculty members provide one-on-one guidance, allowing students to acquire a thorough understanding of music and exert their full musical and technical abilities. Courses in liberal arts and music theory enable students not only to mature in their musicianship, but also obtain basic humane and academic knowledge. The department s curricular requirements cover a wide range of repertoire- from solo and chamber works to ensemble and orchestral excerpts- broadening each student s perspective while preparing one for their musical career. Moreover, the exploration of different performance settings, such as chamber music, orchestra, string ensemble, symphonic band, allows students to deepen their artistry and ensemble skills. The department aims to nurture musicians who attain a deep understanding of classical music while striving with endless passion and curiosity throughout their career. Graduates actively take part in musical fields as outstanding soloists, chamber musicians, orchestral players, music educators, and art managers. Events and Activities : The Orchestral Instruments Department provides various performances and events regularly. In collaboration with other departments of the School of Music, faculty members showcase solo and chamber performances at the annual Faculty Concert held at the University Concert Hall. The faculties actively perform as a soloist, chamber musician, recitalist, conductor or section principal throughout the year. Students are also provided with concert opportunities in different musical formations. Eminent students are given chances to experience solo and chamber music performances at the Freshman Concert and the Chamber Music Concert. Schicchi. In collaboration with the Dance Department, the orchestra has performed renowned ballet music such as Monkus s Don Quixote and Adam s Giselle, and the Composition Department Professor KyungJung Kim s ballet Choonhyang. The percussion performance group Focus Ensemble consists of alumni and current student members of the Orchestral Instruments Department. This ensemble showcases its performances annually and has received positive recognition over the last decade. The Kookmin Philharmonic Orchestra, organized under the leadership of Professor Hoontae Kim, presents various performances each year with programs that include the symphonic works of Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Bruckner, Mahler, Sibelius, and Berlioz. The Kookmin Philharmonic Orchestra, in collaboration with the Voice Department, has presented operas such as: Donizetti s L eliser D amore; Mascagni s Cavalleria Rusticana; and Puccini s Gianni

22 Composition Department The Composition Department aims to nurture the development of students as professional composers by promoting their creativity, their musical ideas, and their abilities to express themselves. In order to assist the intellectual growth of each student, the department offers a wide range of courses providing a broad spectrum of ideas and practices. Along with various courses that explore different aspects of music, such as music theory, analysis, composition, and recital, emphasis is also placed on the study of liberal arts courses such as history, sociology, philosophy, and education. By providing balanced teaching and learning experiences in both music and humanities, students are able to find diverse academic and professional positions when they complete their studies. Events and Activities : Composition majors hold a New Music Festival, known as A Night of New Music every year. This event encourages students to participate in the festival by submitting their own compositional works. The committee, consisting of faculty members of the Composition Department, selects pieces to be presented at the festival. Moreover, the faculty members of the Composition Department play a prominent role in promoting new music. New musical works have been premiered at various venues in Korea, the United States, and Europe. Also, a number of composition graduates have continued their studies and conducted research abroad both in Europe and the United States.

Department of Music The Department of Music offers a wide range of courses to help students improve their musical abilities and skills necessary for the creation, interpretation, and performance of music. The curriculum focuses on the development of performance skills and the acquirement of musical knowledge. Students have ample opportunities to perform on and off campus during their academic years. In addition, they are widely encouraged to cultivate their intellectual curiosity and interest in various aspects of music throughout the program. Completion of the graduate school curricular requirements will lead to the Master of Music degree or the Doctor of Musical Arts degree.
55 Voice Major The Voice major offers vocal lessons to develop each student s vocal abilities and realize their musical talent. The voice major graduate program aims to produce accomplished vocalists who can be successful in their professional pursuits as performers and vocal instructors. Piano Performance Major The Piano major requires the ability to interpret and analyze new music repertoire, theory, and literature, acquired from undergraduate studies. Students are trained to become skilled professional musicians and educators through the graduate piano performance program. In order to successfully meet this goal, one should engage in a variety of course works, develop performance skills through individual piano lessons, and participate in various domestic and international master classes and seminars. Collaborative Piano Major The Collaborative Piano Major focuses on the studies of key techniques and musical knowledge necessary for the practice of collaborative piano repertoire. They utilize and explore the essential collaborative piano repertoire throughout the graduate program, leading one to become a professional accompanist. Moreover, the school conducts exchange programs with other universities for the study of chamber music repertoire. Such process helps broaden the students perspective, as well as enable professional music instructors to understand the educational component of music. Orchestral Instruments Major The Orchestral Instruments Major prepares students to become professional musicians in strings, winds, brass and percussion instruments. The school offers effective and practical courses in music literature, theory and history. In addition to chamber ensemble and individual lesson opportunities, students partake in internationally acclaimed master classes, concerts and seminars. The graduate students will go on to widely contribute to the contemporary musical environment. Composition Major The Composition Major Graduate Program is designed to enhance the students abilities in creating music while offering new musical perspectives.
