THEATRE NEWS Following yet another record-breaking season in 2015 we are well on the way to having two sell out shows for 2016. At the time of going to press, with ten weeks to go before opening night, more than 90% of all tickets for West Side Story have been sold and Thoroughly Modern Millie is also selling very quickly. Producer Celia Mackay is delighted to be working with Matthew White and Stephen Mear as directors of our shows for 2016. Matthew White, who will direct West Side Story, has directed numerous West End musicals including the Olivier award winning musical Top Hat as well as Sweet Charity and Little Shop of Horrors both of which were nominated for Olivier awards for Best Musical Revival. Matthew has directed shows all over the world and his most recent was a major UK tour of The Producers in 2015. Born and bred in Loughborough Stephen Mear, who will choreograph and direct Thoroughly Modern Millie, is a world renowned Choreographer and Director and has won numerous accolades including Olivier awards for Mary Poppins (Co Choreographed with Matthew Bourne) and Hello Dolly and a nomination for this year s Olivier s for his choreography on Gypsy at the Savoy Theatre. He was also choreographer for the Disney stage musical The Little Mermaid on Broadway, his most current work is on Sunset Boulevard at the ENO starring Glenn Close. Stephen also has Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on Tour throughout this year. We are really looking forward to welcoming them both to Kilworth for what we are sure will be a truly memorable season. From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet is transported to 1950 s New York City, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time. It s 1922, and small-town girl Millie Dillmount has just arrived in New York City, ready to make her dreams come true. Millie s plan is simple: find a job as a secretary for an eligible bachelor, and then marry him. It doesn t take long, however, for Millie s thoroughly modern plan to go awry. Her conniving landlady plots to kidnap Millie s best friend and sell her into slavery in Hong Kong, her wealthy boss seems entirely uninterested in her flirtations, and worst of all the Arguably this iconic multiple Award Winning musical has the most famous, legendary musical hits of all time which include Somewhere, Maria, America, I Feel Pretty and Tonight. High energy awesome dance numbers, passionate, funny yet moving with a powerful plot and beautiful love story, it is little wonder that West Side Story changed the face of musical theatre. 31 ST MAY 17 TH JULY 2016 man with whom she falls head over heels in love doesn t have a penny to his name. Winner of no less than 6 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie is based on the 1967 film of the same name and includes such memorable numbers as How the Other Half Lives, Not for the Life of Me, Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life and of course the title song Thoroughly Modern Millie. 16 TH AUGUST 11 TH SEPTEMBER 2016 6 BOOK ONLINE: www.kilworthhousetheatre.co.uk OR BOX OFFICE: 01858 881939 (MON-FRI, 10AM-4PM)
