February 2015 Private Screening: The Forgotten Angel of Bastogne Dates to Remember Individual Membership Dues - Reminder Final Friday January Super Bowl Bowling, Billiards & Beer Tournament All You Can Eat Indo-Pakistani Style Final Friday February A Guided Tour of the Coudenberg Palace Irish Club's Saint Patrick's Day Ball Here is What You Missed! Community News: International Chorale Seeks Members Private Screening of the Major Film The Forgotten Angel of Bastogne Join us on Tuesday, February 10, for a private pre-screening of Martin King s new film The Forgotten Angel of Bastogne, which will be released to the general public in August. This prestigious event will be held at 6 pm at the Hard Rock Café and will be followed by an optional three-course dinner. Martin King, author, historian and producer of the film, will give a brief introduction before the screening. The film tells the real story of Augusta Chiwy, a young black woman born in the Congo who left her home in Louvain, Belgium on a journey that would affect the rest of her life. She was going home for Christmas to visit her family in Bastogne, a city that within a week would become the center of the largest land battle in U S Army history: the Battle of the Bulge. Bastogne was destined to become a place of terror and destruction; where no one was safe and where anyone could be killed at any time.

In mid-january the war moved on to Germany. Augusta returned home, married and raised a family. She never talked about the horror she had experienced. Augusta disappeared into history until a comment made to historian and author Martin King in 2008 sparked a quest to find this heroic woman who saved so many American lives. After months of searching he found her living alone in Brussels. Conversation after conversation brought to light events that had been hidden for 65 years. King began a campaign to gain her the international recognition that she so deserved. In 2011, Augusta was knighted by the King of Belgium, and received the United States Army Humanitarian Civilian Award for her extraordinary bravery in World War Two. The Forgotten Angel of Bastogne, a documentary film about Augusta Chiwy, was screened on March 21, 2014 in Bastogne, Belgium. This isn t a film for military audiences alone. It is the story of a woman who demonstrated unselfish service and great heroism. It is a story within a story, as the film answers the question was she a myth? It is a story of the relationship between two very different people, Jack Prior a white, 10th Armored Division medic and Augusta Chiwy, a black Belgian nurse who volunteered for what meant certain death if she was captured by the advancing German Army. It is a story that completes one that began in the Band of Brothers HBO Series, where two nurses, Renée Lemaire, and Anna from the Congo are depicted treating patients in the Bastogne aid station. Renée was killed in a bomb blast on Christmas Eve and became famous as the Angel of Bastogne. Anna was lost to history until Martin King found Augusta Chiwy living in Brussels sixty-five years later. Augusta has become the Forgotten Angel of Bastogne. After the screening, the Hard Rock is proposing an optional three-course dinner: Jumbo Combo A delectable array of their most popular starters that is big enough to share: spinach artichoke dip, hickory-smoked chicken wings, onion rings, potato skins and Tupelo chicken tenders, all served with three different sauces for mixing and matching Choice of Main Courses Grilled salmon topped with Maitre d Hôtel butter and served with mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables or Hard Rock s legendary burger topped with seasoned bacon, two slices of Cheddar cheese, a crisp fried onion ring lettuce, tomato, and pickles Dessert Hard Rock Café Brownie Please note that due to limited seating for the screening, this event is limited to 40 people. A Guided Tour of the Coudenberg Palace Join us on Saturday, February 28, for a fascinating guided tour of the Coudenberg Palace where we will discover the remnants of the palace of Charles V. Since the middle ages, a castle has overlooked Brussels from Coudenberg hill. As of the 12th century, the successive monarchs and their representatives transformed a small fortified castle into a sumptuous residential palace, one of the most beautiful palaces of Europe and one of Charles V s main residences. This prestigious building was severely damaged by fire in 1731. Some forty years later, the ruins of the palace were pulled down and the ground flattened out for the construction of the new royal district. The remains of this palace make up the Coudenberg archaeological site. During our visit we will discover the Rue Isabelle and the old structures of the main buildings of the former palace of Brussels, which are now the foundations for today s royal district and the Hoogstraeten House where the most interesting discoveries made during the various archaeological excavations conducted on the Coudenberg are displayed. This guided tour is limited to a maximum of 20 people. Event Details: Date: Saturday, February 28, 2015 Time: 2:45 p.m. Place: Place des Palais 7, 1000 Brussels (entry through the BELvue Museum) Price: 20 for members, 25 for non-members. Public Transportation: Metro: Parc/Park or Trone/Troon; buses 38, 71 and 95: Ducale; bus 54: Trone/Troon; trams 92 and 93: Royale/Koning.
