Powered by the IoT platform THE CHALLENGE ihome wanted to launch a new generation of intelligent, internet-connected products, in a timescale that kept them ahead of their competitors. Their goal was to deliver differentiated, innovative offerings with a great user experience at an affordable price. Having committed to an aggressive launch deadline with their distribution channels and retailers, they needed to find a scalable Internet of Things solution to securely and reliably manage millions of products and enable customers to control these devices from anywhere via their smartphones. THE SOLUTION The first in ihome s family of smart, connected products is the ihome Control Smart Plug (known as ISP5). It allows household appliances like lights, air conditioners, fans or heaters to be plugged in and controlled from anywhere through the Internet. Real-time data The platform manages the identity of every Smart Plug, keeping real-time schedules for each device including its security policies, authorized users and status. Each device contains an embedded Marvell chipset running an software agent that enables it to communicate with the platform. Fast secure connection The Smart Plug connects via wifi over the internet to the cloud platform using MQTT, a publish/subscribe protocol suited for the IoT thanks to its small footprint on the device and support for lower latency at high volumes. Security and privacy are safeguarded via unique keys, generated for each user and each Smart Plug, while all communications are encrypted using TLS. Consumer apps Using s mobile toolkits, ihome developed the ihome Control App for both ios and Android so users can easily manage their Smart Plugs. Integrations The solution integrates with ihome s CRM and ticketing systems via s REST APIs. In addition the Smart Plug can be rapidly integrated into other Smart Home ecosystems, such as SmartThings or Nest, and be controlled by their third party apps. Crucially, ihome maintains ownership of all the product data generated and has access to a single, consolidated view of their customers irrespective of the home hub or platform they use. 3

Powered by the IoT platform RESULTS Successful Market Launch worked closely with ihome during their product development, integration and testing phases, enabling them to achieve their launch deadlines. ihome was one of 5 global HomeKit launch partners, leading to a rush of pre-orders, an ihome feature on Fox News and a hugely successful retail launch in July 2015. Enriched Consumer Control ihome now boasts a simple, intuitive Control app for ios and Android. The Smart Plug also enables consumers to use Siri on their iphone or ipad to command the plugs to turn on and off. Unlocking the Value of Data ihome now has unprecedented real-time product data from the field which they can use to improve their Smart Plug in the future and improve customer support real time. They also have a direct online engagement with end users, enabling them to better understand and communicate with each of their customers.
