Overview Formatting in APA Style A research paper presented in the American Psychological Association (APA) style of formatting is required for many college disciplines such as science, history, and psychology. A paper written in APA style includes a title page, an abstract, an introduction, a body, a conclusion, and a reference page. The title page contains a running head, page number, the title, the author s name (your name), and the institution affiliation (HCC). The abstract is a concise summary of the paper and includes key words. Helpful: YouTube How to Format Your Essay in APA Style by Teresa Bolstad and Purdue OWL, General Format, Title Page, Abstract. Key words: career, salary When you borrow material for research (paraphrased, summarized, or quoted material), you MUST use an in-text citation immediately after stating the information. (See: Purdue OWL, In-Text Citation) Also, use a reference for this same citation at the end of the paper on the reference page. (See: Purdue OWL, Reference List: Basic Rules, Books, Electronic Sources) Each page will have a running head and page number. Some pages will have headings. Reference Citation for APA Formatting When a writer borrows researched material (paraphrased, summarized, or quoted work), from another source for their work, the writer MUST use an in-text citation immediately after stating the information and include a citation for the borrowed material at the end of the paper on the reference page. 1. First create the reference citation. After the reference citations are completed you will put them on the reference page And, you will know what information is available for the in-text citation after the reference citation is completed. Following are two templates with what information is to be included, in the correct order, with the proper punctuation. For a book: Author s last name, initial. (date of publication). Title of book. A government agency can be an author may use copyright date or edition capitalize only the first word & proper nouns, italicize title of books. Place of Publication: Publisher. For a website: Sources vary greatly with what information is available for the reference citation. Put in the information available and found in the original source. If your source does not have a particular piece of information, skip that category and continue with the next piece of information. Ie. If there is no author listed, start with the title. If there is no periodical information, skip it and go on to the next piece of information, the retrieval information. Reference citations for a website: A government agency can be an author may use copyright date or edition capitalize only the first word & proper nouns, do not italicize an article. if available *The example above is only a sample and is adequate to familiarize EDUC 1300 students with APA style but does not cover all the possible formatting situations. There are too many variations to list them all here.

In-Text Citation for APA Style Formatting 3. Use the information from the reference citations to plan your in-text citation. The information included in the citation will be determined by what information is available from the original source; therefore, the in-text citation is formulated after the reference citation is completed. In-text citations are placed after borrowed material is written into a research paper. Usually, the author s last name, publication date, and page number Example as it appears in the student s paper: are placed in parenthesis after the borrowed material. student s paragraph When planning a career, one should consider the monetary needs and expectations for a Example with correct punctuation, abbreviations, etc.: borrowed material middle class family living in Houston, Texas. A teacher can expect to make $54,000 per (Smith, 2001, p.8). in-text citation year in Houston. (Smith, 2001, p. 8). author s last name, year of publication, page number For two authors: (Smith & Jones, 200l, p.15). (both author s last name, publication, page number) Use the following template to make an in-text citation. If the first choice (i.e. author s name) is not available, the second choice (i.e. the title of the work) information is substituted. Examples: (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015). Author, year of publication, no page number The author is a government agency. There is a publication date. There is no page number: omit page number. (Texas Outlaws, 2015, p. 562).
