As Freeman notes, in his unpublished Additions and Corrections of 1986, Darwin made a number of corrections to this second issue, the first of which is found on Page 103 [104]. One of Darwin s most important works, and of considerable interest in reference to Australia and its native inhabitants Darwin takes over a page in thanking Australian notables for their help including Dyson Lacy, R. New York and London; D. Appleton and Company; N.D. [c. 1900]. ***Freeman 1387. With Authorized Edition stated on title-verso. Entirely reset (and quite different from other so-called Authorized Edition copies), apparently without the additions of Francis Darwin. The frontispiece is a fine view of Darwin s study. A very handsome edition, limited to 1000 numbered copies, this appears to be one of a smaller number specially bound for Brentano s, N.Y., most copies being issued in red cloth. #66847 A$850.00

The first leaf of the advertisements describes The Minerva Library (New Series.) Large Crown 8vo, art linen, extra gilt, fully illustrated, 2s. and Volume II in the series is this work. This volume however has a variant binding, and the three-quarter portrait of Darwin in the regular series has been replaced by a portrait of Darwin standing from the painting by Sir J. Collier in the National Portrait Gallery. We hazard a guess that this is a somewhat later publication (concurring with Freeman). The biographical introduction is by G. T. Bettany. #66390 A$160.00

A duplicate from the Bibliotheque Universitaire, Bordeaux, with stamp on title-pages, in the bottom margin of plates and in margins of a few text pages. The two parts were published as monographs in the Palaeontographical Society s series. The Index to Volume II is not present; it was apparently overlooked and was not published until 1858, when it appeared as a single leaf. The collation of this copy differs slightly from Freeman s in which no mention is made of the final leaf in Volume I, and which gives only pp. [iv] for the preliminaries to Volume II. As Freeman notes, a complete set of the Palaeontographical Society s monograph volumes appeared in facsimile in 1966, but Darwin s work was not available alone. #66799 A$1850.00

71 Freke, H. ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES BY MEANS OF ORGANIC AFFINITY: First Edition; pp. [viii], 136(last blank); folding table; original semi-limp cloth (rebacked, preserving original endpapers; a few light pencil marks); a very good copy; very rare. London; Longmans and Co.; 1861. ***Freke independently arrived at the conclusion that all living beings are descended from one primordial form, a doctrine he first propounded in the Dublin Medical Press in 1851. However his grounds of belief and treatment of the subject were, as Darwin remarked in his Historical Sketch to the sixth edition of his Origin of Species, wholly different from mine; but as Dr. Freke has now (1861) published his Essay... the difficult attempt to give any idea of his views would be superfluous on my part. This copy with the signature of the original owner ( G. H. Batten ) on title-page, and a double-sided leaf of closely written notes on (Erasmus) Darwin, Locke, Descartes, etc. in the same hand loosely inserted. #66746 A$550.00

London; John Murray; 1861. ***Freeman 381, variant a. Considerably rarer on the market than the first, second, fifth, or sixth editions, this edition contains the twopage Additions and Corrections, to the Second and Third Editions, and for the first time, the full 6-1/2-page Historical Sketch (it having appeared in preliminary form in a U.S. edition of 1860 and a Stuttgart edition, in translation, of the same year). #66436 A$7500.00

The right of Translation is reserved. Cr. 8vo, Sixth Edition, Seventh Issue; pp. xxii, 458; folding diagram, glossary, index; original green cloth, with binder s ticket of W. Bone & Son on rear pastedown; a nice copy; very scarce. London; John Murray; 1878. ***Freeman 403. Printed from stereos of the eleventh thousand, and the second issue of the final definitive text, Darwin having made some very minor corrections to the eighteenth thousand (vide Freeman). This Sixth edition, the last to be fully revised by Darwin and quite extensively re-written, includes a new chapter in refutation of objections to his theory, especially those of St. George Mivart, the Roman Catholic biologist. The Sixth was also the first edition to drop the word ON from the title and the first edition of the Origin to use the word evolution. The Glossary was compiled by W. S. Dallas at Darwin s request. #66444 A$950.00

Cr. 8vo, Sixth Edition, later issue; pp. [ii], xxii, 458, 32(inserted adv., dated September, 1888); folding diagram, glossary, index; original green cloth; (name on halftitle & bookplate on endpaper); a nice copy; very scarce. London; John Murray; 1888. ***Freeman 424. 75 Darwin, Charles. THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. By Charles Darwin, M.A., LL.D., F.R.S., etc. Sixth Edition, with Additions and Corrections. With a Portrait. In two volumes. Vol. I [II]. London: John Murray, Albemarle Street. 1891. Cr. 8vo, Sixth Edition, Second Issue of Library Edition; Vol. I, pp. [ii], xxvi, 366, [2](adv., verso blank); portrait frontispiece (with tissue-guard), folding diagram; Vol. II, pp. vi, 340; glossary, index; original grey-green cloth; original navy blue chalk-surfaced endpapers; (spines a little dull & ends slightly worn; a little foxing at start of first volume); a nice set; very scarce. London; John Murray; 1891. ***Freeman 437. The Sixth Edition was the final edition extensively edited by Darwin and the first edition to drop the word ON from the title and the first edition of the Origin to use the word evolution. The Glossary was compiled by W. S. Dallas at Darwin s request. This two-volume edition, the second in this form, it having first been issued in 1888 (Freeman 422) as the Library Edition, is a handsome work, with larger type and printed on thicker paper. The title-pages to this set are cancels, suggesting it may simply be a re-issue of the 1888 edition, and there is no indication of a Library Edition as such, however the word indigeens in Chapter IV has been corrected to indigenes and the text is clearly printed from stereos, at least in part, so the reason for the cancels is somewhat obscure, and as such not noted by Freeman. Both of these two-volume issues are very seldom seen on the market, presumably being destined for libraries, and were probably produced in quite limited numbers, this issue having no thousand designation and the original two-volume issue of 1888 sharing the Thirty-third Thousand designation with another one-volume issue having the regular pagination and small type of the one-volume sixth edition. #66452 A$850.00
