INTRODUCTION What s DSP? Introduction Wecome to the exciting word of digita home entertainment. This unit is one of the most compete and advanced V receiver avaiabe. Some of the more advanced features may not be famiiar to you, but they are easy to use. State-of-the-art technoogies such as Doby Digita and Digita Theater Systems (DTS) may be new to your home, but you have probaby experienced the amazing reaism they bring to feature fims in theaters around the word. To make the istening experience even more enjoyabe, this unit incudes a number of excusive, digitay created istening environments known as digita sound fieds. Choosing a sound fied program is ike transporting yoursef to such venues as an outdoor arena, a European church, or a cozy jazz cub. Take some time now to read more about these features and enjoy the new experiences this unit brings to your home theater. Digita Sound Fied Processing Technoogica advances in sound reproduction over the ast years have enhanced the istening experience with improved carity, precision and power. However, something has sti been missing: The atmosphere and acoustic ambiance of the pubic venue. Our Yamaha engineers have extensivey researched the nature of sound acoustics and the way sound refects inside a room. We sent these engineers to famous theaters and concert has around the word to measure the acoustics of those venues with sophisticated microphones. The data they coected is used to recreate these environments in digita sound fieds. Some of these digita sound fieds are created using data measured directy at the origina venue; others are created from combinations of data to form unique environments for specific purposes. Of course, that ony soves haf of the probem. These engineers have no way of knowing the acoustics of your istening room, so we ve made it possibe for you to adjust the various parameters of this data to taior each virtua venue to your taste. You can use these sound fieds to enhance any source and in combination with any of the foowing surround sound technoogies. Some are designed especiay for music, and some especiay for movies. Doby Pro Logic Surround Doby Pro Logic Surround has been used in movie theaters since the mid-seventies. It has aso been avaiabe in home entertainment systems since the ate eighties and continues to be a popuar format for home theater systems. It uses four discrete channes and five speakers to reproduce reaistic and dynamic sound effects: two main channes (eft and right), a center channe for diaog, and a rear channe for specia sound effects. The rear channe reproduces sound within a narrow frequency range. Most video tapes and aser discs incude Doby Pro Logic Surround encoding as do many TV and cabe broadcasts. The Doby Pro Logic Surround decoder buit into this unit empoys a digita signa processing system that stabiizes each channe for even more accurate sound positioning than is avaiabe with standard anaog processors.

INTRODUCTION Doby Digita Doby Digita is the next eve of Doby Surround sound system deveoped for 5 mm fim-movies by empoying ow bit-rate audio coding. Doby Digita is a digita surround sound system that provides competey independent muti-channe audio to you. Doby Digita provides five fu range channes in what is sometimes referred to as a / configuration: three front channes (eft, center and right), and two surround channes. sixth bass-ony effect channe is aso provided for output of LFE (ow frequency effect), or ow bass effects that are independent of other channes. (This is caed the subwoofer channe or LFE channe.) This channe is counted as.1, thus giving rise to the term 5.1 channes in tota. Compared to Doby Pro Logic that is referred to a /1 system (eft front, center, right front and just one surround channe), Doby Digita features two surround channes, caed stereo or spit surrounds, each offering the same fu range fideity as the three front channes. y using the buit-in Doby Digita decoder, you can experience the dramatic reaism and impact of Doby Stereo Digita theater sound in your home. Wide dynamic range of sound reproduced by the five fu range channes and precise sound orientation by the digita sound processing presents isteners much excitement and reaism that has never been experienced before. Doby Digita forms 5.1 channes as mentioned eft, and moreover, it can aso form fewer channes, for exampe channe stereo and monaura. You may be abe to find some channe stereo and/or monaura sources encoded with Doby Digita in the market. Laserdisc and DVD are home audio formats that coud benefit from Doby Digita. In the near future, Doby Digita wi aso be appied to DS, CTV and HDTV. The ongoing reease of Doby Stereo Digita theatrica fims now underway wi provide an immediate source of Doby Digita encoded video software. Engish DTS Digita Surround DTS (Digita Theater Systems) system was deveoped to repace anaog soundtracks of movies with six discrete channes of digita soundtracks, and now, it is instaed in many theaters around the word. The DTS digita payback system changed the way we experienced movies in theaters with six discrete channes of superb digita audio. The DTS technoogy, through intense research and deveopment, made it possibe to deiver a simiar encode/decode discrete technoogy to home audio surroundsound entertainment. The DTS Digita Surround is an encode/decode system which deivers six channes of master-quaity, -bit audio; technicay 5.1 channes, which means 5 fu-range (eft, center, right and two surround) channes, pus a subwoofer (LFE) channe (as.1 ). It is compatibe with the 5.1 speaker configurations that are currenty avaiabe for home theater systems The DTS Digita Surround agorithm is designed to encode the six channes of -bit audio onto some aserdiscs, compact discs and DVDs with consideraby ess data-compression. y using the DTS decoder buit into this unit, you can experience the dramatic reaism and impact of the DTS instaed theater s high quaity sound in your home. Laserdisc, compact disc and DVD are home audio format within which DTS can represent its high quaity muti-channe audio. (In addition to movies on aserdiscs, many exciting new muti-channe music recordings wi aso become avaiabe in the form of DTS-encoded compact discs.) Manufactured under icense from Digita Theater Systems, Inc. US Pat. No. 5,51,9 and other word-wide patents issued and pending. DTS, DTS Digita Surround, are trademarks of Digita Theater Systems, Inc. INTRODUCTION CINEM DSP: Doby Surround + DSP / DTS + DSP The Doby Surround sound and DTS systems show their fu abiity in a arge movie theater, because movie sounds are originay designed to be reproduced in a arge movie theater that uses a mutitude of speakers. Trying to create a sound environment simiar to that of a movie theater in your home is difficut because of the room size, materia inside the was, the number of speakers, and so on. In other words, your istening room is very different from a movie theater. However, Yamaha DSP technoogy aows you to create neary the same sound experience as that of a arge movie theater in your home by compensating for the ack of presence and dynamics in the istening room with origina digita sound fieds combined with Doby Surround or DTS Digita Surround sounds. CINEM DSP The YMH CINEM DSP ogo indicates those programs that are created by the combination of YMH DSP technoogy and Doby Surround or DTS. Doby Pro Logic + Digita Sound Fieds Digita sound fieds are created on the presence side and the rear surround side of the Doby Pro Logic Surrounddecoded sound fied respectivey. They create a wide acoustic environment and emphasize surround-effect in the room, etting you fee much presence as if you were watching a movie in a popuar Doby Stereo theater. This combination is avaiabe when the digita sound fied program No. 6, 7, 8, 9 or PRO LOGIC/Enhanced of No. 1 is seected, and the input signa of the source is anaog, PCM audio or encoded with the Doby Digita in -channes. Doby Digita or DTS + Digita Sound Fieds Digita sound fieds are created on the presence side and the independent eft and right surround sides of the Doby Digita-decoded or the DTS-decoded sound fied respectivey. They create a wide acoustic environment and much surround effect in the room without osing high channe separation. With wide dynamic range of Doby Digita or DTS sound, this sound fied combination ets you fee as if you were watching a movie in the newest Doby Stereo Digita theater or DTS instaed theater. This is the most idea home theater sound at the present time. This combination is avaiabe when the digita sound fied program No. 6, 7, 8, 9 or DOLY DIGITL (or DTS DIGITL SUR.)/Enhanced of No. 1 is seected, and the input signa of the source is encoded with the Doby Digita (except in -channes) or encoded with the DTS. 6

PREPRTION Speaker setup Setting up your speaker system This unit has been designed to provide the best sound fied quaity with a fu five-speaker system setup, using a pair of main speakers to output main source sounds, a pair of effect speakers to generate the sound fied pus one center speaker for diaog. We therefore recommend that you use a fivespeaker setup. four-speaker system using ony one pair of effect speakers for the sound fied wi sti provide impressive ambience and effects, however, and may be a good way to begin with this unit. You can aways upgrade to the fivespeaker system ater. Use of the center diaog speaker is recommended When paying back a source with Doby Pro Logic decoded, or paying back a source which contains center-channe signas with Doby Digita or DTS decoded, diaog, vocas etc. are output from the center channe. Therefore, if you want to maximize the performance of your udio/video home theater system, it is recommended that you use a center channe speaker. If, for some reason, it is not practica to use a center speaker, it is possibe to enjoy the movie without it. est resuts, however, are obtained with the fu system. Use of a subwoofer expands your sound fied It is aso possibe to further expand your system with the addition of a subwoofer and ampifier. The use of a subwoofer is effective not ony for reinforcing bass frequencies from any or a channes, but aso for reproducing signas at the subwoofer channe with high fideity during paying back a source with Doby Digita or DTS decoded. You may wish to choose the convenience of a Yamaha ctive Servo Processing Subwoofer System, which has its own buit-in power ampifier. Speakers and speaker pacement Your fu five-speaker system wi require two speaker pairs: the MIN SPEKERS (your norma stereo speakers) and the RER SPEKERS, pus the CENTER SPEKER. You may aso be using a SUWOOFER. The MIN SPEKERS shoud be high performance modes and have enough power handing capacity to accept the maximum output of your audio system. Other speakers do not have to be equa to the MIN SPEKERS. For precise sound ocaization, however, it is idea to use high performance modes that can reproduce sounds in fu range for the CENTER SPEKER and RER SPEKERS. Pace the MIN SPEKERS in the ordinary position. Pace the RER SPEKERS behind your istening position. They shoud be neary 1.8m above the foor. Pace the CENTER SPEKER precisey between the two MIN SPEKERS. (To avoid interference, keep the speaker above or beow the teevision monitor, or use a magneticay shieded speaker.) If using a SUWOOFER, such as a Yamaha ctive Servo Processing Subwoofer System, the position of the speaker is not so critica because ow bass tones are not highy directiona.
