The George Inn at Norton St Philip was built in the 14th or 15th century and claims to be Britain s oldest tavern, although it has rivals. Originally built as a wool store for the Carthusian Hinton Priory at nearby Hinton Charterhouse, it s thought to have got a licence to sell alcohol from 1397. The timber-framed upper floors were added in the 15th century. Popular today, it serves a good range of beers and excellent food.
