SONG: THIS IS AMAZING GRACE SKETCH PSALM 96 VARIATIONS ON A THEME (This scene begins with Reader #1 holding an open Bible, crossing to center, and beginning to read to the audience from Psalm 96. As Reader #1 continues to read, the other readers, one at a time, come from the audience or choir and cross to Reader #1.) #1: This is from Psalm 96: (reading) Sing a new song to the Lord; #2: (immerging from audience or choir, crossing to #1) Wait a minute. We are to sing just a new song to the Lord? #1: That s what it says. #2: But what about the old songs? I mean, can t we sing those to the Lord, too? #1: Sure, but, (taking out a pencil and paper) OK, how about this (writing) Sing a new or an old song to the Lord? #2: There you go. #1: May I proceed? #2: Absolutely. #1: Sing to the Lord, all the earth. #3: (immerging from audience or choir, crossing to #1) Wait, just the earth gets to sing to the Lord? #1: That s what the psalmist wrote. #GRACEWINS Script and Performance Notes 4

#3: But can t the planets and other galaxies praise the Lord, too? #1: I suppose. #3: Add something like that and read what we have so far. #1: (writing) Sing a new or an old song to the Lord. Sing to the Lord all the earth, the planets, the stars and all other galaxies. #3: Great. Keep reading #1: Sing to [the Lord], praise His name; #4: (immerging from audience or choir, crossing to #1) Just His name? What about praising His works? #1: You guys, I don t feel comfortable messing with God s Holy Word like this. #2: We re not messing with it. #3: Yeah, we re just trying to understand it. #4: We want to make sure God gets all He deserves. What else does the Psalm say? #1: Well, that He reigns that He is great and worthy of praise. #2: OK. #3: Yeah. I get it. #4: Me too. #1: So leave it like it was originally written? #GRACEWINS Script and Performance Notes 5

#2: Sure. He s great, whether we sing new songs or old songs. #3: And He s worthy of our praise from all He created. #4: And His name includes everything about Him. Right? #1: That s what I m saying. So may I finish reading? #2: Of course. #3: Sure. #4: By all means. #1: (reading from Bible, beginning with verse 11) Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice; let the sea and all that fills it resound. Let the fields and everything in them exult. Then all the trees of the forest will shout for joy before the Lord, for He is coming for He is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness and the peoples with His faithfulness (Psalm 96:11-13). (music begins as they exit) #2: Good job. #3: Excellent. #4: Yeah. Awesome. SONG: JESUS, THE ANTHEM SONG: O PRAISE HIM! ALLELUIA! #GRACEWINS Script and Performance Notes 6

SKETCH THE SEEKER (The scene begins with Seeker tweeting, using a phone or tablet.) SEEKER: (typing on device and reading message aloud) Hey, anybody listening? I am in need of help. I am weak against temptation. I can t find peace no matter what I do. Is there anyone who can give me love and joy and guidance? Seeker is downstage, receiving a response from his or her tweet. An offstage voice can be Provider, or Seeker can read aloud from the device.) ( RECEIVE SFX not included on track) PROVIDER: Hello, anybodyoutthere. I can give you everything you asked for. And more, if you want. I have the power you re missing. I have peace that passes all understanding. I give joy, especially in hard times, and I will direct your paths. You probably wonder how much this costs how involved it may be. Well, here it is: It costs nothing. It is free. In fact, I paid for it a long time ago, so you wouldn t have to. However #GRACEWINS Script and Performance Notes 7

SEEKER: (as an aside) There s always a however. PROVIDER: It will also cost you everything your hopes, dreams, joys, sorrows, struggles, victories. I want it all full surrender. And if you re not satisfied, I ll leave you alone and let you work this out on your own. Hashtag thanksfortheinvitation SONG: IT IS WELL SONG: HELLO, MY NAME IS SKETCH GRACE RACE I Characters in all three parts of Grace Race : ANNOUNCER RUNNER #1 RUNNER #2 REGRET (a runner) DEFEAT (a runner) REGISTRAR GRACE (a runner) (This scene begins with the Announcer s voice, offstage if you like. ANNOUNCER: Runners, please line up, single file, in front of the registration table, where you will be assigned a number and a starting position. #GRACEWINS Script and Performance Notes 8

RUNNER #1: (to Runner #2) Your first race? RUNNER #2: No. You? RUNNER #1: First time. RUNNER #2: Are you nervous? RUNNER #1: A little. You? RUNNER #2: Oh yeah. I m always nervous. The other runners are so strong. RUNNER #1: Have you been training? RUNNER #2: A little. You? RUNNER #1: Nah. (Enter Regret in line behind Runner #1 and Runner #2) REGRET: (to Runner #1 and Runner #2) Hey guys, you in line? RUNNER #1: Yeah. But we re in no hurry. RUNNER #2: You go ahead. REGRET: OK. Sure. (Regret moves to the front of the line at the registration table.) REGISTRAR: Name? REGRET: I go by several names, actually. REGISTRAR: Which one do you want to use for this race? #GRACEWINS Script and Performance Notes 9

REGRET: Let s see uh based on this crowd maybe Regret. REGISTRAR: Regret it is! Here s your number and your position. (hands Regret a piece of paper) RUNNER #1: (looking at Runner #2) What do you think? RUNNER #2: I think I ll come back later. I ve run against that guy before. (Runner #1 and Runner #2 exit as music begins.) SONG: ONLY GRACE SKETCH GRACE RACE II (This scene is a continuation of Grace Race I. The stage should be set up accordingly, with registration table and runners lined up across the stage as before. Runner #1 and Runner #2 have rejoined the line, next to each other at the end of the line.) ANNOUNCER: Runners, please line up in front of the registration table, where you will be assigned a number and a starting position. RUNNER #1: (to Runner #2) Hey, I see you re back. RUNNER #2: Yeah, I m pretty determined to finish this race. RUNNER #1: Me too. No matter what that Regret guy says, I m all in. RUNNER #2: Let s do this! #GRACEWINS Script and Performance Notes 10

(enter Defeat to the line behind Runner #1 and Runner #2) DEFEAT: It s great to see such enthusiastic competitors. RUNNER #1: Well, we re not letting anybody throw us off course. DEFEAT: Oh really? That s good to hear. Good luck. RUNNER #2: You too. RUNNER #1: (to Defeat) Say, what s your name? DEFEAT: My name? RUNNER #1: Yeah. DEFEAT: I go by several names. RUNNER #2: Uh oh. We heard another guy say the same thing. DEFEAT: Yeah? What name is he using? RUNNER #2: Regret. DEFEAT: Oh, that s my brother. He runs a really good race. I d look out for him if I were you. RUNNER #1: OK. So what name are you using? DEFEAT: Me? Oh, I think I ll use Defeat today. REGISTRAR: Next. RUNNER #1: (to Defeat) Uh, you go ahead. #GRACEWINS Script and Performance Notes 11

RUNNER #2: Yeah, you can go ahead. (Defeat moves up in line.) RUNNER #1: (to Runner #2) What do you think? RUNNER #2: Same thing you re thinking. (Runner #1 and Runner #2 exit as music begins.) SONG: HOW CAN IT BE? SKETCH GRACE RACE III (This scene is a continuation of Grace Race II. It is set up as before. Runner #1 and Runner #2 are almost to the registration table when Grace enters behind them.) ANNOUNCER: Last call for runners in this race. Runners line up. RUNNER #1: (to Grace) You want to go ahead of us? GRACE: No. That s OK. I ll wait. You guys go ahead. RUNNER #1: OK. RUNNER #2: (to Grace) What name are you using today? GRACE: Excuse me? RUNNER #2: Well, some other runners we ve met in line use various names. They said they are brothers. GRACE: Oh yeah. I know them. I see them at every race. #GRACEWINS Script and Performance Notes 12

RUNNER #1: Are they tough competitors? GRACE: Sure, but you can outlast them. RUNNER #2: Us? GRACE: Of course. You re the King s children, right? RUNNER #2: Yes, we are, but what does that have to do with anything? GRACE: Well, it means that what is in you is greater than what is all around you. RUNNER #1: Oh. RUNNER #2: I see GRACE: Why don t you let me run beside you in this race and remind you who you are and why you re here. Defeat and Regret, or whatever they call themselves today, don t have a chance. You re more than conquerors. RUNNER #1: Yeah more than conquerors. RUNNER #2: I get it. RUNNER #1: (after a pause and a look at Runner #2) We ll take you up on your offer. GRACE: Great. REGISTRAR: Next in line. RUNNER #2: Oh, by the way, what s your name? #GRACEWINS Script and Performance Notes 13

GRACE: I go by different names sometimes, like those other guys, but today you can call me Grace. RUNNER #1: I didn t see that coming (music begins) SONG: GRACE WINS SONG: I AM SKETCH THE ANCHOR (in Readers Theatre style or as a responsive reading with congregation) (based on Hebrews 6:19) #1: No matter how deep the water #2: No matter how strong the current #3: No matter how large the vessel in which you place your life ALL: His anchor holds. #1: No matter how frightening the storm above you #2: No matter what lurks below the surface #3: No matter how far away you seem to be from the shore ALL: His anchor holds. #1: It s heavy, but it will not drag you down #2: It s ancient, but it has not deteriorated with age #GRACEWINS Script and Performance Notes 14

#3: It s waterproof, rustproof, immovable, unchanging, eternal ALL: His anchor holds. #1: We have the hope of Christ as an anchor for our souls. #2: That means we re safe. #3: We are secure because ALL: His anchor holds. SONG: WE BELIEVE SKETCH THIS IS HER STORY (Monologue) Fanny Jane Crosby was blind from birth, and yet she wrote over 8,000 hymn lyrics many we still sing today. Ironically, some refer to sight or vision. Once during Fanny s life, a well-meaning preacher said to her, I think it is a great pity that the Master did not give you sight when He showered so many other gifts upon you. Miss Crosby smiled and replied, Do you know that if at birth I had been able to make one petition, it would have been that I was born blind? Because when I get to heaven, the first face that shall ever gladden my sight will be that of my Savior. In this next song, Fanny Crosby includes the lyrics watching and waiting, looking above. In the original hymn, she also writes, Perfect submission, perfect delight, Visions of rapture now burst on my sight. Sightless and yet her insights were even better than 20/20. SONG: BLESSED ASSURANCE, JESUS IS MINE (MY KING IS COMING) SONG: BECAUSE HE LIVES (AMEN) SKETCH Adaptation of Matthew 25:31-46 (in Readers Theatre Style) (Characters may come from the audience or from the choir, in character, and cross to a place on the stage.) #1: I was hungry #2: I was thirsty #3: I was homeless #4: I was cold #5: I was sick #6: I was in prison #7: I was a slave #8: Jesus said to His followers, To those whom I have provided food, clothing, shelter, healing, and freedom I ask you to provide for others. #1: I was hungry, and you fed me. #2: I was thirsty, and you gave me clean water. #GRACEWINS Script and Performance Notes 16

#3: I was homeless, but you took me in. #4: I was cold, and you gave me warm clothes. #5: I was sick, and you gave me medicine. #6: I was in prison, but you came and visited me. #7: I was a slave, and you rescued me. #8: Then Jesus added, If you provide for one of the least of these, my children, it is as if you have done this to Me. Homeland Security s motto is: If you see something, say something. But Jesus says, If you see a need, do something. SONG: DO SOMETHING #GRACEWINS Script and Performance Notes 17
