We will hear frm peple wh have many years experience in different rles thrugh different frms f media. Yu will experience hands n hw t fcus n a subject, create a visin, cmmunicate yur visin, build a team and execute a prject. There will be small assignments alng the way and ne cncentrated final assignment. We will als explre the different paths t becming a directr. We will d exercises t help yu discver yur strengths and weaknesses in the rle f directr and inspire yu with the stries f hw thers have carved their way. Guest speakers will give yu insight int what it takes t make yur way as a directr and what prducers, writers, and actrs lk fr in a gd directr. Participatin: There is n way t talk abut directing withut participating. By its nature, the rle f directr is a leadership rle. S I will nt nly expect yu t participate but als t share yur passin fr the art f visual media and demnstrate yur leadership and cmmunicatins skills in class and ut. Yu shuld be treating the class as a prductin and therefre be n lcatin befre yur call time and be fully prepared. Assignments: There will be sme assigned reading and viewing, sme suggested reading and in class exercises as well as sme hmewrk t prepare fr upcming classes. All are designed t create a prgressin in the classes. S please cmplete all assignments as they are building blcks. We will discuss the different avenues yu can take t a career in directing as well as discuss the varius frms f cntent available fr directrs. A directr is a Stryteller, Quarterback, Cnductr, Life Lng student, and Observer f Life Directing in all its frms what is the same and what is the difference: Features, Episdic, Cmmercials, Music Vides. The vide can be mtivated by the music r yu can find music that wrks with yur idea/stry. It can be any style f strytelling yu wish. It can be a straight-ahead music vide r an abstract piece. But yu must execute a beginning, middle and end stry arc. Yu cannt use dialgue. Visuals and music nly. Be as creative as yu want t be in deciding what kind f visuals t use. This vide shuld represent yur persnal style/stry telling sensibility. This shuld be a calling card fr yu as a directr. Ptential emplyers shuld be able t tell wh yu are stylistically frm this vide. Yu will nt be graded n the level f the prductin quality thugh it desn t hurt fr it t be f the highest yur grade will be dependent n yur ability t execute yur idea fr an audience. ASSIGNMENT: Write r acquire an riginal shrt subject script r find a scene in an existing script and make it yurs. All prjects must be at least 3 minutes in length and nt exceed 5 minutes. Each film must have a beginning, middle and end. It must have at least 2 characters and must have at least 1 mving sht (tracking r hand held). Be prepared t pitch yur prject t prducers in the next sessin, Wed. Sept 21 st. Yu must then write a treatment and email it t me PRIOR t the next sessin n Wednesday 21 st. This treatment shuld be a 1-2 page dcument which includes: - Lgline - Synpsis - Shrt character descriptin(s) - Als bring a hard cpy f yur treatment with yu t class n the 21 st. SESSION 5 Yur prject Pitch and Sht - 2 hrs-wed Sept 21st 7-9pm Pitch yur prject t prducers Prducer/Writer TBD Yu will be intrduced t a prducer. Yu will then have t pitch yur prject t the prducer in rder t sell it. Yu will receive real time ntes back frm prfessinal writers/prducers. Mini Camera Operatin Wrkshp with DP Bb Hayes Bb will review basic camera peratin, shting styles, and tips n hw t express yur visin t a DP and crew. ASSIGNMENT : Yu need t prepare a sht schedule and sht plan. The sht schedule will be the day(s) and times f yur sht brken dwn. The sht plan will include any reference phts, verhead drawings, sht lists. This will be due t me n later than FIVE days prir t yur first sht day. ASSIGNMENT: Cmplete Prject fr Final Class / Screenings Run time n less than 3 n mre than 5 minutes. Yu will have 3 weeks t edit yur prject due Wed. Nv 9th. Yu must write a ne-paragraph intrductin fr yur prject t present befre the screening. This is an intrductin f yu the directr t the audience and a sense f why yu chse this film/subject. I will be available during this time if yu want feedback as yu are editing, if yu need assistance in the editing prcess. This will need t be scheduled in advance. SESSION 7 Screen Prjects and Review Hw t receive ntes 2.5 hrs Wed. Nv. 9th 7-9:30pm SCREEN SHORT FILMS - Receive ntes Yu will be screening yur films fr industry prfessinals. Yu will present yur film with a shrt intr. Yu will be expected t present yurself and yur film with the utmst f prfessinalism. Yu will receive ntes and feedback frm the industry prfessinals n hw yu presented yurself hw yu were perceived as a directr and the quality f yur film/idea and hw it measures up t industry standards. This will be an exercise nt nly in presenting yurself, but als in learning the prcess f receiving ntes frm Prducers/Executives.
