Works Cited~ MLA Style Bibliography/Parenthetical Citations The Works Cited page is located at the end of your paper and contains all the resources that you have cited in your paper. The list simplifies documentation by permitting you to make only brief references to these works in the text. The sources in the Works Cited are listed alphabetically by the author's last name. Typing and Spacing for Works Cited: In alphabetical order; do not use A, An, and The for alphabetizing titles Numbers at the beginning of a title are considered spelled out for alphabetizing If the author s name is unknown, alphabetize by the title, ignoring any initial A, An, or The To cite two or more works by the same author, the name appears only for the first entry then three hyphens, followed by a period and the titles are used for the following works Smith, Adam. How to Use MLA. ---. Answering Questions About MLA Must indicate medium of publication (e.g. Print or Web) within citation Italicize the names of: o Books, plays, poems published as books o Pamphlets o Periodicals (Newspapers, magazines, and journals) o Websites o Online databases o Films, television, and radio broadcasts o Compact discs, audiocassettes Use quotation marks for: o Titles of articles, essays, stories and poems published within larger works o Chapters of books o Pages in websites o Individual episodes of television and radio broadcasts URL is optional, check with instructor for their preference Margins- top, bottom and sides should be 1 inch

Double spacing within and between citations Second line and following lines should be indented five spaces (hanging indent) Abbreviate all months except May, June and July (Jan., Feb., Mar., Apr., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov., Dec.) Date of access form: day month year (7 Jan. 2015) Paper use only white, 8 ½ by 11 inch paper One space after a (.) period unless instructor prefers two or a (:) colon and one space after a (,) comma Paper Format: Margins- top, bottom and sides should be set at 1 inch Quotations- longer than 4 lines should be indented 1 inch from both margins Paper- use only white, 8 ½ by 11 inch paper One space after a (.) period unless instructor prefers two or a (:) colon and one space after a (,) comma Number pages consecutively in upper-right hand corner, with last name before page number Parenthetical (In-text) Citations: In- text documentation is done parenthetically in the body of the paper. This must clearly indicate the specific source in the list of works cited. Include the title if there are multiple resources from the same author. Punctuation follows the parenthetical citation..was noted (Smith 254). If the authors name is used in the sentence, you do not need to repeat the name in the parenthetical citation, only the page number. Smith extensively explored the role of emotion in the creative process (263). When a source has two or three authors, include their last names in the order they appear. (Smith, Martin, and Jones 201).

For two or more works by the same author, put a comma after the author s last name and add the title of the work (if brief) or a shortened version and the relevant page reference. (Frye, Double Vision 85). If no page number is listed, use the author s last name only. (Smith). If the author s name is not given, use the title (or a shortened version) before the page number. (Double Vision 85). Citing Indirect Sources (Secondary Sources): Information that is found in a source that quotes another source is called a secondary source. If you quote a secondary source, identify the quoted author in your text and say qtd. In (quoted in) in your parenthetical citation. Ravitch argues that high schools are pressured to act as "social service centers, and they don't do that well" (qtd. in Weisman 259). Tip: Include any punctuation if it is part of the title and italicize the whole title.
