AP English 10-11 Summer Assignment Welcome to AP English I look forward to an exciting year with you next year. Materials: How to Read by Thomas C. Foster 1984 by George Orwell Reading Assignment: First read like a. You will be amazed at how the material in this book not only applies to the works you have already read but also to modern media. I would recommend applying the knowledge you gain from this book to the movies you watch this summer. We will refer to this book often in class and I will expect you to have a thorough understanding of this text and the ability to apply it to a variety of works. Next carefully read 1984 by George Orwell. I have attached some background information on the novel and the author, read this prior to beginning the novel. Application: Quiz On Monday, August 9 th -Be prepared for a quiz over the main ideas in both like a and 1984 Short Response Due: Tuesday, August 10 th 1. In a short answer response, 200-300 words typed, apply one of the chapters of How to like a to a modern movie. Begin with a brief summary of the chapter and then apply it to a modern movie. Be creative and have fun. Do not waste time summarizing the movie, assume I have seen it. Just provide specific events that are relevant to applying like a to the movie.

Short t Essay Due: Thursday, August 12 th 2. In a short essay, 700-1000 words typed, apply two different chapters Literature like a to 1984. Give a summary of the relevant chapter in How to Read Literature like a and provide specific evidence from the novel to reveal how it is used in 1984. Again avoid plot summary. Remember this is a full essay so it should have a full intro paragraph including an attention getter, bridge and thesis. It should also have body and a full conclusion. Do not use Chapter 12 in like a for this essay All written responses should be written in MLA format. Basics of MLA format 1 inch margins 12 point font Times New Roman Double space In-text citations after every sentence that includes paraphrased or quoted information. o In-text citation includes the author s last name and page numbers. o Example: Winston is always watched by Big Brother (Orwell 54). Works cited page even for like a and 1984.. Attached is a rubric for each assignment. Take your time and impress me with your writing and analytical skills and know that I expect that every essay you turn in will be you own work. Please do not wait to the last minute to complete these essays. In that spirit, I will offer extra credit to help you get started on this assignment. If you submit your short answer response by e-mail by July 19 th, than you will receive extra credit. The amount of extra credit will depend on the extent of the work. Use this as an excuse to pop some popcorn and have a movie night with your friends. If you have any questions, my e-mail address is kelly.riley@guhsdaz.org Have a great summer and I look forward to seeing you in the fall.
