AP English 10-11 Summer Assignment Welcome to AP English I look forward to an exciting year with you next year. Materials: How to Read by Thomas C. Foster 1984 by George Orwell Reading Assignment: First read like a. You will be amazed at how the material in this book not only applies to the works you have already read but also to modern media. I would recommend applying the knowledge you gain from this book to the movies you watch this summer. We will refer to this book often in class and I will expect you to have a thorough understanding of this text and the ability to apply it to a variety of works. Next carefully read 1984 by George Orwell. I have attached some background information on the novel and the author, read this prior to beginning the novel. Application: Quiz On Monday, August 9 th -Be prepared for a quiz over the main ideas in both like a and 1984 Short Response Due: Tuesday, August 10 th 1. In a short answer response, 200-300 words typed, apply one of the chapters of How to like a to a modern movie. Begin with a brief summary of the chapter and then apply it to a modern movie. Be creative and have fun. Do not waste time summarizing the movie, assume I have seen it. Just provide specific events that are relevant to applying like a to the movie.

Give a summary of the relevant chapter in How to Read Literature like a and provide specific evidence from the novel to reveal how it is used in 1984. Again avoid plot summary. Remember this is a full essay so it should have a full intro paragraph including an attention getter, bridge and thesis. It should also have body and a full conclusion. Do not use Chapter 12 in like a for this essay All written responses should be written in MLA format. Basics of MLA format 1 inch margins 12 point font Times New Roman Double space In-text citations after every sentence that includes paraphrased or quoted information. o In-text citation includes the author s last name and page numbers. o Example: Winston is always watched by Big Brother (Orwell 54). Take your time and impress me with your writing and analytical skills and know that I expect that every essay you turn in will be you own work. Please do not wait to the last minute to complete these essays. In that spirit, I will offer extra credit to help you get started on this assignment. If you submit your short answer response by e-mail by July 19 th, than you will receive extra credit. The amount of extra credit will depend on the extent of the work.
