Level 3 Adjudicate a traditional song and dance performance Credits 10 Purpose This unit standard is for people who intend to work in traditional song and dance in Botswana as adjudicators. It recognises competence in adjudicating traditional song and dance performances. People credited with this unit standard are able to: Demonstrate knowledge of traditional song and dance styles. Demonstrate knowledge of traditional song and dance rudiments. Use traditional song and dance assessment tools. Demonstrate the ability to differentiate traditional song and dance sounds and movements. Describe and compare traditional song and dance performances by different groups. Evaluate traditional song and dance performances. Special notes 1. General Information i. Assessment of this unit standard must be done in both practical activity and theoretical activity consisting of written or oral form, and may not be simulated. ii. A portfolio will be accepted as evidence to attain credits for this unit standard, provided it comes from credible sources who should have known the candidate for a minimum of 2 years performing this role consistently. 2. statements i. Traditional Song and Dance performances include, but are not limited to, school, institution and community group performances. 3. Definitions i. Adjudicate refers to assess a performance and give a judgement or a ruling. ii. Juxtaposition refers to combinations, coincidence, concurrence and union iii. Rudiments refers to basics, essentials and fundamentals iv. Timbre refers to the quality of sound. v. Style refers to method, approach, manner and technique. vi. Performance of this unit standard must be done in accordance with the following legislation and codes of practices: Safety, Health and Environment Policy, Employment Act., Bye-laws, Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act of Botswana CAP: 68:02 of 2006. Quality assurance requirements BOTA has established a system for moderating the assessment of candidates against this standard. Elements and Performance Criteria Element 1 Demonstrate knowledge of traditional song and dance styles Traditional song and dance styles include, but are not limited to, Setapa, Hosana, Borankana, Seperu, mmino wa Bathei, Tonki Separapara. 1.1. Traditional song and dance styles performed are identified by name and described. 1.2. The adjudication shows knowledge of traditional song and dance styles by providing informed and relevant comments. Element 2 Demonstrate knowledge of traditional song and dance rudiments Rudiments include, but are not limited to, texture, form, harmony, rhythm, timbre, performance direction, melody, theme, style, choreographic structure, use of dance space, time, dynamics and time length, juxtaposition, space between dancers and singers. 2.1. Traditional song and dance rudiments are identified and described in terms of how they have been applied in the performance. 2.2. The adjudication comments show the suitability of rudiments used in the performed traditional song and dance style. Element 3 Use traditional song and dance assessment tools Assessment tools include, but are not limited to, copies of adjudication form or sheet, adjudication criteria for traditional songs and dances. 3.1. Traditional song and dance performances are assessed using the approved assessment tools. Botswana Training Authority 2014 24/10/2016 Page 3 of 6

3.2. Adjudication comments and scores are recorded on the tools in accordance with group performance. 3.3. The quality of the performed song and dance is determined using the approved adjudication criteria. Element 4 Demonstrate the ability to differentiate traditional song and dance sounds and movements Traditional song and dance sounds and movements include, but are not limited to, tone colour, texture, intonation, phrasing, rhythm, beat and ensemble. 4.1. Distinguishing features of each traditional song and dance ensemble sounds are identified and described in accordance with its performance. 4.2. Differentiation is demonstrated by providing relevant comments and objective scoring on the adjudication sheet. 4.3. Differentiation is demonstrated by the ability to evaluate different ensembles. Element 5 Describe and compare traditional song and dance performances by different groups 5.1. Description and comparison display ability to identify aurally, explain and compare important traditional song and dance elements for each performance. 5.2. Description and comparison display ability to analyse and explain compositional, choroegraphical features and characteristics of each performance. Element 6 Evaluate traditional song and dance performances 6.1. Traditional song and dance performances are evaluated against the set standards. 6.2. Evaluation demonstrates ability to identify and describe a list of evaluation criteria for traditional song and dance performance. 6.3.
