CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background and Problems There are many ways that people can do to express their feeling in order to get happiness. Whatever people do, their main goal is to feel happy. Some people get their happiness trough their hobbies. Another way to express their feeling is by enjoying literary work. Literature is significant in our life. It helps us to grow, both personally and intellectually. It develops our imaginations, increases our understanding and deepens our sympathy. Human being needs literature for pleasure, to express their feeling and their attitude of life. Literature is beautiful writing which is valued as imaginative works of art, particularly: drama, poetry, and fiction. Literature differs from other scientific paper because it has expressive side and aesthetic value. According to Warren and Wellek, through its expressive side, literature conveys the attitude and the tone of the writer. It also wants to influence and persuade the attitude of reader as well as change the reader ultimately. Literature also has aesthetic value that refers to the usual characteristic of literature such as: style, composition, and general force of presentation (1962:23). Poetry as one of the literary works is easier to be appreciated than to be defined. According to Timpane,Ph.D. and Watts, Poetry is defined as a kind of language that says more intensely than ordinary language does is the practice of 1

creating artworks using language. Further, what is meant as poem is a composition in verse that is characterized by a highly developed artistic form, the use of rhythm, and the employment of heightened language to express an imaginative interpretation of situation or idea (2001:10). The content of poetry can only be perceived by searching something behind the poem. The difficulties to find out the aesthetic value of poetry generally appear on the facts that poets used figurative languages throughout their works. Here, figurative languages play very essential role in poetry. Without figurative languages, a poem might lose its attractiveness, meaning, value and beauty. That is why figurative languages considered as the heart of a poem. Harry Shaw stated, Figurative language is writing ( or speech ) that make use one or more figure of speech that purposes to employ ornamental devices for comparing dissimilar things and for creating sounds and images. Some types of figurative language are: allegory, allusion, antithesis, apostrophe, epithet, euphemism, hyperbole, irony metonymy, oxymoron, climax, anticlimax, paradox, parallelism, personification, repetition, simile, synecdoche and tautology (1972:114). In order to find out the aesthetic values, therefore, the readers should be able to identify the figurative language used and to comprehend its meaning. As form of poem, song contains components that are presented in poetry, including figurative languages. Song is an artistic form of expression based on sound, generally considered a single (and often standalone) work of music with distinct and fixed pitches, pattern, and form. Song is always contains of lyric. Lyric is expressing the writer s feeling of or composed for singing (Hornby, 2

2000: 802). It means that lyric of a song can be written depending on someone experiences of life such as, love, happiness, sorrow, family and friendships. Understanding the aestheticvalue behind song is as hard as understanding poem because of the figurative languages. To comprehend well, the readers must identify words or phrases that consist of figurative languages and find their meaning. Therefore, since studying poem is worth and interesting to do, studying song is worth and interesting too. The fact is the reason why this scientific paper concentrated to study songs. There are some kinds of figurative language usually applied in the song by composers. Katy Perry s songs are selected as the object because of the following reasons. First, Katy Perry s songs contain many kinds of figurative languages and phrases just like poems. Second, Katy Perry is asinger-songwriter and musician whose works have topped music charts worldwide and received appraisal from critics and numerous awards. Third, Katy Perry was declared the Top Global Female Recording Artist of 2013 by The International Federation of The Phonographic Industry (IFPI). According book entitled Metode Linguistik proposed by Sudaryanto, it is mentioned that theory should givean understanding of the object. That is the reason theory is often called as work requirement (1986:26). Theory is very essential in every research because it is a means in analyzing the problems of research. In writing this scientific paper the theory which is applied for analyzing the types and the meaning of figurative language carried by Katy Perry s song is the theory about figurative language proposed by Laurence Perrin in the book entitled Sound and Sense an Introduction of Poetry. In regard to the term of figurative language, Perrin explains on his book as the following: Figurative language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. Figurative language also broadly defined as any way of saying something other than ordinary way (1977:61) Besides from the main theory, the theoretical concepts about figurative language are also taken from other references. In order to get the expected and required result, method should be used in comprehensive way. The method of research on this scientific paper divided into threeparts; there are data source, method of data collection and method of data analysis. The first method of this scientific paper is finding out the source of data. The data source is the object from which the data are taken. If the data are taken from publish material such as short story, novel, drama, song, film, and poetry, this publish material are consider to be data source.
