The Globe, built by carpenter Peter Smith and his workers, was the most magnificent theatre that London had ever seen and was built in 1597-1598. This theatre could hold several thousand people! It was situated on the South bank of the river Thames in Southwark. The Globe had many levels the pit, where the poorer members of the audience would pay 1 penny to stand (these were called the groundlings). The three tiers where richer members of the audience would sit pay to sit on cushions under cover. The Globe theatre was a huge success and was extremely popular.
