Reading Task - Information Retrieval William Shakespeare is England s greatest writer, famous for his plays and poetry. Going to the theatre was extremely popular in Shakespeaerean times. Read the following extract and answer the questions that follow. The Globe, built by carpenter Peter Smith and his workers, was the most magnificent theatre that London had ever seen and was built in 1597-1598. This theatre could hold several thousand people! It was situated on the South bank of the river Thames in Southwark. The Globe had many levels the pit, where the poorer members of the audience would pay 1 penny to stand (these were called the groundlings). The three tiers where richer members of the audience would sit pay to sit on cushions under cover. The Globe theatre was a huge success and was extremely popular. Days out at the Globe would have been an exciting event. Towering above the Globe was a flag, which told people that there was going to be a play performed that day. The grounds surrounding the Globe would have been bustling with people. There would have been stalls selling food and drink. A trumpet would tell people that a play was about to begin and people would then take their places

From across the room, Romeo saw the Juliet, and curiously asked a serving man who she was. The serving man did not know. Romeo was immediately in love; he declared that he has never been in love until that moment. Arrogantly moving through the crowd, the angry and violent Tybalt heard and recognised Romeo s voice.
