Tipperary May 15

May belongs to the Bealtaine Festival, celebrating creativity as we age! Paul Durcan in conversation with Eamon O Shea Over 120,000 people now take part in Bealtaine, making it one of Ireland s biggest arts festivals. From dance to cinema, painting to theatre, Bealtaine showcases the talents and creativity of both firsttime and professional older artists. It is a chance for people to make new and challenging work, a chance to communicate traditions between the generations. In Tipperary the County Arts service works in partnership with Tipperary Libraries to present and showcase the creativity found in abundance throughout the county. This year we look forward to a Bealtaine filled with music, the spoken word, conversation, visual arts and crafts and film events. Most events are free or subsidised and we invite you to come along and get involved at a venue near you in Tipperary this May. Tá fáilte roimh cách páirt a ghlacadh I ceiliúradh na Feile Bealtaine. The Source Arts Centre, Thurles Thur 7th May, 7.30pm Admission: 7/ 5 conc. www.thesourceartscentre.ie Tipperary Bealtaine Festival 2015 and Poetry Ireland present award winning poet Paul Durcan and Tipperary hurling manager and poetry lover Eamon O Shea in conversation as part of this year s festival. Professor of Economics at NUI Galway, with a special research interest in gerontology, Eamon O Shea will explore themes of sport, literature and creativity in life with Paul Durcan who will read some of his much loved GAA poems, together with startling new work from his latest collection The Days of Surprise. Join Paul and Eamon in what promises to be an inspiring event which re-inforces the aims of the Bealtaine Festival in encouraging enquiry, creativity and expression at all stages of life. A Name for Himself followed a year later, and was short listed for the Kerry Fiction Prize. Between 2000 and 2014, Catherine Published seven further novels. Bealtaine Films Bealtaine Film Tour co-ordinated nationally by Catherine s non-fiction book, An Unconsidered People was published in 2003. This book was a result of a chance meeting with a woman who left Ireland in the 1950s to work in London which sparked a fascination with immigration that has lasted to this day. Catherine Dunne has researched this topic widely. Catherine will facilitate a number of writing workshops and talks on her work during this year s festival. Please see listings for details. The Hundred-Foot Journey The Quiet Man Director: John Ford USA / 1952 / 129 minutes / Certificate: G Cast: John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Victor McLaglen, Barry Fitzgerald Sweet Sixteen A storytelling & braiding project Place for U Community Café, Clonmel Every Tuesday in May, 10.15am As part of a larger collaborative project, Sweet Sixteen, which will span 3 years, textile artist Theresia Guschlbauer will explore the theme of Turning Sixteen to coincide with next year s centenary commemoration of the 1916 Easter rising. Looking at archival material and sharing stories, participants will braid fragments of materials, song, poems and verses together as documents of life lived. Golden Years postcard Project Damer House Gallery, Roscrea Last year s project with the Active Retirement Group in Roscrea called Shooting from the Hip resulted in participants developing photographic portraits, in which they reinvented themselves for a New Passport Identity for their Golden Years. This year in a follow up project the group will work with artists Patricia Hurl and Therry Rudin and photographer, Brian Redmond to develop a series of postcards which will enable the broader community to share the positive reflections of Roscrea through the eyes of the Golden Years. Directed by Lasse Hallström (Chocolat) from Richard C. Morais novel, The Hundred-Foot Journey is an uplifting cultural feast. When Hassan and his family, led by Papa (Om Puri), move to a quaint village in the South of France with the grand plan of opening an Indian restaurant in the picturesque countryside, they are undeterred by the fact that only 100 feet opposite stands a Michelin starred classical French eatery. However upon encountering the icy proprietress, Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), the Kadam family realise they may have bitten off more than they can chew. Outraged by the new arrivals, Madame Mallory is determined to have their business shut down. As cultures clash and food flies, an all-out war escalates between the two establishments until, that is, Hassan s passion and talent for French cuisine begin to enchant Madame Mallory and even she can t deny this young chef could have what it takes to garner even more acclaim for her beloved restaurant. Almost twenty years in the making, The Quiet Man was arguably the most personal film of director John Ford's long and illustrious career as well as one of his great achievements. Humorous, romantic, lively, endearing and lovingly photographed on location in Ireland Cork Film Festival 2010 "The Quiet Man remains as romantic and enjoyable as when it originally came out BBC Films Please see events listing for details of screenings
