Ian Sexton Filmmaker & Educator Ian Sexton Boston, Massachusetts ics@iancsexton.com Teaching Experience Emerson College 2017 - Present Affiliate Professor in Visual Media Arts Basic Cinematography and Videography A comprehensive study of camera controls and shooting methods, focusing on their relationship to the properties of light, and how these choices can reinforce creative intent. The course explores 16mm film and digital cinema as well as lighting and grip techniques using industry standard equipment. Students work closely together on set learning proper set etiquette as well as the roles and relationships of the different crew positions. Students develop and refine a language for the critical discussion of works of cinema, focusing on the role of the cinematographer and the visual decisions that contribute to successful filmmaking. Harvard Extension School 2014 - Present Instructor in Digital Media Arts Lighting Design for Video and Post-Production A extensive study of the properties of light, focusing on their relationship to camera controls and settings, and how these choices can reinforce creative intent. Introduction to digital post-production workflows and color grading focusing on how differing acquisition methods such as log encoded footage can affect post-production workflows. Software covered includes Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe SpeedGrade, Adobe After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, and REDCINE-X Pro. Students work extensively in small groups gaining hands-on experience and developing the necessary communication skills and set etiquette to succeed in the variety of film and video roles. Introduction to Cinematography and the Art of Digital Filmmaking Provided a solid foundation in the technical and aesthetic considerations of digital storytelling. After mastering the fundamentals through a progression of assignments, students work in small groups to produce short films. CS50 is offered simultaneously at Yale and is the largest MOOC at EdX.org with over 1 million registrants. It is the first lecture to be offered in 4K and the first online course in 360º VR. CS50 R&D investigates and experiments with innovative pedagogical methods for online learning including virtual reality and augmented reality video. Direct 4K multi-camera live streaming broadcasts of high profile events and lectures. Shoot and operate RED EPIC 6K cameras and cinema lenses. Edit in a native 6K workflow with 4K deliverables. Shoot lectures and events in 360º VR video using the Nokia OZO. Developed 360º VR post-production workflow. Manage and instruct full time production staff in best practices and cinematic techniques. Advise students in cinematic techniques and the fundamentals of filmmaking. Consult with professional working groups on content acquisition and delivery. Designed and implemented automated file processing and delivery systems to streamline the content delivery workflow.
