Rome Assisi Florence Venice Innsbruck Dachau Munich Oberammergau Please join us for an unforgettable encounter with our Christian heritage in Italy and for the powerful Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany.

HISTORY OF THE PASSION PLAY The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play begins in 1633. In the middle of the Thirty Years War, after months of dying and suffering from the plague, the people of Oberammergau took a vow to perform the Play of the Suffering, Dying, and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ every ten years. In 1634 they fulfilled their promise for the first time. As early as the mid-18th century spectators were already coming to Oberammergau from all parts of Germany, attracted by the great power and fascination of the play. Nowadays, Oberammergau is happy to host guests from all over the world. In 2010 the village will be performing for the 41st time the play that the people of Oberammergau have kept up in unique continuation throughout the centuries. In a five-hour performance more than 2000 participants enact the story of Jesus of Nazareth on the large open-air stage of the Passion Play Theatre with all its sights and sounds. Almost half of the inhabitants of Oberammergau perform with great dedication the story of the man whose message has given an incredible number of people hope and vitality throughout 2000 years. They play it out from his entry into Jerusalem to his death on the cross and resurrection. Friday, May 14, 2010 Departure Today our group leaves for our international flight to Rome. IF Saturday, May 15, 2010 Rome Welcome to Italy! We are met upon arrival in Rome and enjoy an orientation bus tour of this fascinating city. If we arrive early enough, we have time to take a walk with our guide through the colorful market scene at Campo de Fiori near Piazza Navona. We also visit the Pantheon Rome s best preserved monument. Later we check into our hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure. Tonight we enjoy a welcome dinner together. (Rome-3 nights) IF/L/ D Sunday, May 16, 2010 Rome We begin this Sunday morning with church services and later enjoy lunch and fellowship with members of the congregation. This afternoon, Rome s ancient sights await us. Highlights include the Coliseum, and the nearby Arch of Constantine, which marks the military battle that led to the legalization of Christianity in 313 AD. We also tour the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. We step inside the Mamertine Prison, where tradition says the Apostle Paul was imprisoned for preaching the gospel. Other visits include St. Peter in Chains Church to see Michelangelo s Moses. B/L/D Monday, May 17, 2010 Rome This morning we begin with a tour of the magnificent Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel which was built in the 15 th century as a private chapel for the popes. Later we visit St. Peter s Basilica the greatest church in Christendom. Our afternoon is at leisure. Enjoy shopping in the upscale stores near the Spanish Steps or visit other outstanding museums on your own. Tonight after dinner join us for a floodlit walk of Rome s most beautiful fountains and piazzas. B/D Tuesday, May 18, 2010 Rome, Assisi Today our focus will be on early Christian Rome. We begin with San Giovanni in Laterno the first Christian church in the city. We also visit the Scala Santa the holy stairs that Martin Luther, like so many pilgrims, climbed on his knees. It was during that visit that the seeds for the Reformation were planted as Luther began to question the rituals of the Catholic Church. We also tour the fourth century Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, the traditional sight of Paul s tomb. Then we travel the ancient Appian Way to the Catacombs of San Sebastian. This underground Christian cemetery contains precious samples of early Christian art. After lunch we head for the beautiful Umbrian town of Assisi where we have time to relax before dinner. (Assisi-1 night) B/D Wednesday, May 19, 2010 Assisi, Florence The Basilica Di San Francisco was built in honor of St. Francis. Around the year 1200 he countered the decadence of church government with a powerful message of non-materialism and dedication to God. Once inside, we see why the basilica is one of the artistic and religious highlights of Europe. It s frescoed from top to bottom by the leading artists of the day. We enjoy a walking tour of this lovely town which highlights the life of St. Francis. Later, rolling hills covered in vineyards and olive groves greet us as we drive through the Chianti wine region. We stop in one of the picturesque towns along the way before reaching the renaissance city of Florence. (Florence-2 nights) B/D Thursday, May 20, 2010 Florence Today we have a guided tour of one of the world s greatest artistic cities Florence. We begin with Michelangelo s David. We see the famous Duomo and Giotto s Tower. We also view the magnificent bronze doors of the Baptistery. Florence was also home to Reformer Girolamo Savonarola. Our tour includes the Museum of San Marco the monastery where Savonarola lived which helps illustrate his fascinating life story. Learn about his fiery sermons against corrupt church leadership which led to his ex communication and eventual martyrdom in 1498 in the Piazza della Signoria. The rest of the afternoon is free for shopping, visiting other outstanding museums, or trying the best gelato in Italy. B

Friday, May 21, 2010 Florence-Venice This morning we depart for the romantic city of Venice. In the afternoon we visit the most famous sights St. Mark s Basilica, which is built over the tomb of the evangelist Mark, and the Doges Palace, the former seat of government and power.
