Cadenza International Summer Music School Strings & Piano 13-20 July 2018 Purcell School London cadenzasummerschool.org.uk

Cadenza 26th Glorious Year The Cadenza International Summer Music School for Strings and Piano, now in its twenty sixth anniversary year is established as an annual gathering of exceptional musicians. Teaching provision is generous and fair, and, unusually, there is time to focus on both solo repertoire and daily chamber groups. A minimum of three individual lessons on each student s first study instrument is guaranteed, along with pianist rehearsals and concert opportunities. Most people play in at least one chamber group (repertoire plans to be made in advance, especially for pianists) coached not less than every second day. Groups and partnerships can evolve flexibly during the week the coaching timetable is arranged in two day cycles by mutual consent. Pre-formed chamber ensembles can apply for bursary support, and the Pamela Spofforth Scholarship is available to an exceptional violinist wishing to focus on chamber music. String Orchestra projects are an additional invaluable part of our training for Junior members, and voluntary for Seniors. Although of specialist level, Cadenza prides itself on a friendly and inclusive atmosphere, and unconditional support and encouragement for every student. Partly this stems from a large age-range eleven year olds under the careful supervision of two matrons through the teens to undergraduates, postgraduates, professional and amateur adults. We have fun at every level but the real inspiration eye opening, sometimes even life-changing is the quality of the formal musical interactions. Please don t hesitate to give me a ring if you would like further details. Maureen Smith - Violin Performing the Sibelius Concerto, Maureen won the BBC Violin Competition aged 18, and launched a major career including frequent concerto appearances with the major UK orchestras, Proms appearances, BBC broadcasts and Recordings. She studied with Gyorgy Pauk, Josef Gingold, and Szymon Goldberg. A founder member of the Villiers Piano Quartet, Maureen taught at the RCM 1997-2011, and is now a professor at the RAM, where she has had many distinguished students. Alexander Baillie - Cello Returning from study with Andre Navarra in Vienna, Sandy quickly established himself as an inspirational force in the cello world, whilst continuing to play to Jacqueline du Pre, one of the formative influences in his life. Now teaching in Bremen and at the Birmingham Conservatoire, the individuality and expressive power of his performances led the Guardian to observe: Playing like this cannot easily be weighed in gold. The latest in a long line of best available recordings are issued by SOMM Leland Chen - Violin Since winning first prize in the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition Leland has distinguished himself as an exciting presence on the international circuit, with big label releases of concertos, sonatas and salon favourites, and frequent appearances with leading orchestras and in major festivals. He is on the faculty of the Royal Northern College of Music. Maureen Smith Carole Presland Adrian Brendel Alexander Baillie Leland Chen Julian Jocobson Fali Pavri Robin Ireland

Carole Presland - Piano Carole teaches at Guildhall and RAM. Her intelligence and passion evidence broadcasts for the BBC, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Radio France and RAI Italian Television with CDs for Pavane, Meridian and EMI Classics, duo performances being selected for the Evening Standard s Critic s Choice and Radio Three s Building a Library. Susanne Stanzeleit - Violin Former leader of the Werethina, Edinburgh and Maggini Quartets, a force on the Contemporary Music Scene, soloist in over 50 recordings, Senior Producer for the Meridian Label and a Professor at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Susanne s contribution to Cadenza could feature in a Duracell Ad, and always includes Come and Play informal evening Chamber Music. - Piano/Course Director John s performing life is rooted in his friends within the string family who include colleagues in the Primrose Piano Quartet and some of the world s greatest cellists. Formerly Head of Piano at Christ s Hospital and a tutor at Guildhall, the Purcell School and RCS, he is now Head of Keyboard at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. He has made many recordings, The Observer praising: Thwaites s warm, generous, perfectly judged pianism (20.10.13). John is Visiting Professor at Xiamen University. Ian Jewel - Viola After studying with Cecil Aronowitz and Bruno Giuranna, Ian had an internationally distinguished career as a member of the Gabrieli String Quartet with whom he toured the world from the Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House and made over 50 recordings. As a soloist, he performed many concertos, including the Rubbra Concerto which he recorded with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. At the Aldeburgh Festival he worked with Benjamin Britten and performed the Marchenbilder of Schumann with Murray Perahia. Ian was Head of Strings at the Purcell School and is professor at the Royal College of Music where he has taught for many years. Julian Jacobson - Piano Julian has been a vital and original force on the London musical scene since the 1970s. Typical was a day in October 2003 when he attracted worldwide media acclaim and raised 6,000 for WaterAid playing all 32 Beethoven Sonatas in a single day at St James s Church, Piccadilly. Julian is much loved as a true artist, wit, and piano poet, with an encyclopedic knowledge of music that extends to legendary improvisations on Cabaret night. He teaches at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Robin Ireland - Viola Robin is renowned as the violist of first Domus, and then the Lindsay Quartet, with whom he played for twenty years, releasing some 60 recordings and touring the great concert halls and festivals of the world. He is Head of Chamber Music at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and now pursuing a busy concert life as a soloist.

Tim Lowe - Cello Tim has rapidly established himself as one of the new generation of outstanding British cellists. He has played many times in major UK and live on BBC Radio 3 as well as many radio stations in Europe. He has recorded chamber music works for various labels and has premiered solo and duo pieces written for him. Tim is Co-Principal Cello of the English Chamber Orchestra and is Cello Professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he has a flourishing class. He also teaches and coaches regularly on courses and festivals throughout the UK and Europe. He is the Artistic Director of York Chamber Music Festival. Adrian Brendel - Cello Adrian studied with William Pleeth, Alexander Baillie and Frans Helmerson and is now Professor at the Guildhall. He is Director of the Plush Festival, has recently worked with Sir Harrison Birtwistle on the Bogenstrich Song Cycle, and performs all over the world as concerto soloist, has recorded the Beethoven Sonatas with his father, and now plays with Aleksandar Madzar, Imogen Cooper, Till Fellner, and Tim Horton. Cadenza Cadenza is open to anyone over eleven, including school pupils, undergraduates, postgraduates and amateur adults, and delivers solo and chamber lessons, usually half and half, but the balance can be varied by request. Older students in pre-formed ensembles often wish to focus on advanced chamber coaching and to enjoy the late night mixed staff/student chamber scene. Conversely every year students reach the final stages of competitions like the BBC, and need to focus on their solo work. Planning This year we want to pre-plan most of the Chamber Music Groups. If you have not attended Cadenza before, then please send a recording or DVD of yourself (or an Internet Link) if at all possible, to help with planning. And please also give some thought yourself to possible partners and repertoire, although these will mostly be decisions for Faculty. If you would prefer to concentrate on Solo Repertoire then you would have more solo lessons, some with piano (unless you are a pianist, for whom there are daily masterclasses), preparing where possible for a solo concert appearance. Please make your preferences clear when you apply. Fali Pavri - Piano Born in Mumbai, Fali studied at the Moscow Conservatoire with Victor Merzhanov for 7 years before coming to the RAM. Concerto soloist with the RSNO, Bournemouth SO and at Endellion and with chamber music partners that include Mstislav Rostropovich, Fali is Associate Head of Keyboard and Professor of Piano at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Younger children have daily String Orchestra and General Musicianship classes, and their pastoral and musical well being is overseen by the Matrons. Other orchestral, chamber and choral options are voluntary, with students of all ages playing in what they feel comfortable with. There are daily piano performance classes, student/staff concerts and open masterclasses. On the final Thursday evening every chamber group performs (audience welcome, as it is at any of the classes and Faculty/Student concerts). Party turns welcome at the Cabaret Party on the final evening. You should arrive on the 13th at any time during the afternoon. Bedding is provided, but bring a towel, piano parts, any spare violas, a music stand if possible, swimming costume, tennis/table tennis equipment as you wish and perhaps a good book. The course finishes on the 20th with a final concert at 11.30am (all welcome), Friday Lunch being the final meal. Cadenza alumni include pianists Teo Gheorghiu and Alex Ullmann, violinists Nicola Benedetti, Michael Foyle, Gordon Bragg and Clara Miss, violists Christine Anderson and Kay Stephen and cellists David Cohen, Laura van der Heijden and Tim Lowe. Purcell School The Purcell School is in delightful grounds on Aldenham Road, in Bushey, Herts (North London). Facilities for music are exceptional there are many Steinway grand pianos and each piano student will have a Yamaha U3 in their bedroom. A new concert hall has just been opened. Laura Sergeant - Cello and Senior Matron Since study at the RCS, Guildhall and in Bremen, Laura has built a busy freelance and teaching career in Scotland. www.cadenzasummerschool.org.uk
