The Last Day of Fifth Grade by: Z. Narrative #1 On the morning of the last day of fifth grade, I woke up excited that summer was here. I got on some shorts and a T shirt. I went into the bathroom and brushed my teeth and put on my deodorant. I went downstairs and slipped on my flip flops. Then I grabbed my bag and got in the car while my mom drove me to Brewed Awakenings. I ordered a delicious bagel with cream cheese and ate it when my mom drove me to her school. Once I was done eating, I hopped on bus 99 that went to my school. I sat next to Jake, my friend, while Mrs. Coughlin let us talk about what we were doing in the summer and where we were traveling. Then, we set up The National Treasures while Mrs. Smith s class came in. I m surprised that they let us watch a P.G. movie with guns and shooting in it!! The movie is about a famous and rich person named Bill Gates, but he is called Benjamin Gates in the movie. He is on a treasure hunt when his friends betray him at the part where he has to steal the Declaration of Independence to go further in the hunt. Ben has to steal it in order for the bad group to not steal it. He ends up getting caught by girl that worked there and starts to fall in love with her. So now he has himself, a brainiac and a Declaration keeper. Once it was almost done, Mrs. Smith s class had to go. But luckily, our class got to watch more of it. We got to watch the good part, but it didn t include the part where they captured the bad guy. She gave us extra time to pack our bags and line up for the clap off for the 5th graders(us). We started chanting, SUMMER SUMMER SUMMER SUMMER!! Over and over again. Finally, we started to walk into the hall of 4th graders. I remembered when I was a 4th grader and I was making the hall of 4th graders. I watched some of the 5th graders that I knew go down the hall. I started clapping the hands of the 4th graders but tried to avoid them hitting my blister from the monkey bars, I am going to really miss those monkey bars. I thought to myself. I was really going to miss this school. I gave everyone a good bye and then I hopped on the bus and it started to go back to my mom s school. The good part is that I m not in elementary schools anymore. I am a middle schooler. I told my mom.

Kayak/Canoe Trip by: Z. Narrative #2 It was a beautiful, sunny day like the sun was taking a tan in a meadow of flowers. It was the day that my family and my cousins were going on a kind of secret Kayak and Canoe trip. BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG!!! I woke up with a start. BANG BANG BANG BANG (silence). Without warning, I knew that Godzilla was stalking the Sleeping Bear Dunes Campsite. BANG BANG BANG BANG. There it was again. But it wasn t Godzilla, it was the sound of pounding metal. Good, I said with a sigh of relief. It wasn t godzilla. I looked over at Sammy, my brother, who was awake by not obvious the pounding noise. Caw Caw Caw Caw Caw Caw. Not the crow again, I joked. I got out and saw my dad fixing breakfast, What was that? I asked my dad who was making some mouth watering pancakes. Don t know, he replied, But get on your swimsuit. Why? I asked while liking my lips because of the mouth watering pancakes. Because we are going a Kayak and Canoe river Trip! I ran into the tent and saw that my brother had fallen back to sleep, so I changed into my swimsuit without hesitation. Once everyone was awake, we got in our cars and drove to the beginning. BANG BANG BANG BANG!!! That s what it was! I exclaimed as I pointed to this machine that was pounding metal support poles for the bridge into the soft, squishy ground. BANG BANG BANG BANG!!! The noise was even louder when I got out of the car to get on a good three layers of sunscreen on. Once I was ready, I went down to the shore and wrestled with my cousins while we waited for some of our parents to come back from dropping off the cars at the part where we were going to stop. Once everyone got situated, one of the employees told us how to do it and how it worked. We told him our ages and he gave us either cushions, or life vests. I got a cushion. Finally, we got to get in the Canoes and Kayaks. My dad and I got in a two person Kayak with a tube tied to the end of it. One of my second cousins was in the tube. We were in the front of the pack all until my dad took a too sharp turn and we were spinning for a while and once my dad was done spinning, we were in the middle and we weren t going fast enough so everyone past us and we were pretty much alone for a second, Go faster dad! I said. Luckily, I have been on this trip twice already so I knew that there was a stop ahead where you could swim for a bit. Once we got there, we weren t as far behind as we thought. People were still getting out of their canoes and kayaks. I stepped into the icy cold water and started to walk to my other cousins. I remember the first time I was swimming in that section. Two years ago, Maggie, my puppy, was prancing happily in the shallow section. The water was warm and I started to run to the others and dove into the water. I jumped to avoid the cold water as much as I could.fayen, one of my uncle s dogs was already in the water playing with her kong. So Alaina and I started chasing her when one of us threw the Kong. At first we were just jumping at it since the water was cold, then it gradually turned into diving. Once we got used to the water, we started to throw it into the deep end. I felt like I was having a better time than I was the last time I went on the Kayak trip. even though I was on a Canoe. I dove into the deep end and raced Alaina to the skipper ball. Almost Losing Maggie

by: Z. Narrative #3 Time to go to bed! It was about 10:00 pm on a scorching summer afternoon. Don t forget to take your vitamins! My mom hollered down the stairs. I opened the cabinet and took out my container of my vitamins. I popped one in my mouth and set the container on the counter. I walked to my bed and pulled the sheets up and then had a good nights sleep. I woke up and went downstairs and saw Maggie. I smiled, but that smile quickly faded away when I heard her whimpering! What s wrong baby? I said as I sat down to rub her ears. She just kept on whining. Maggie made me moppy when I saw the opened up, chewed up, and used to be full container of vitamins! I was scared out of my wits of the feeling that I might lose our cute and cuddly puppy! I didn t know what to do until my mom came down stairs and I showed her the chewed up container of vitamins. Get in the car! my mom replied, now! The sweet agony made me scoop up Maggie and we ran to the car. We went to the closest vet that we usually go to and sat in the waiting room until the veterinarians came out with our little bundle of joy with an I.V. in her arm. Will he make it? I asked Probably not The veterinarian said. The pain was inhabiting me! I couldn t take it anymore.maybe things would turn around when we got to the more advanced vet. Once again, Maggie was in the backroom. It was going to take a long time for Maggie to be fixed so she had to spend the night there. The night was dreadful like summer would never come again. I remember the time that Maggie was having surgery because we didn t want her to make babies. She spent the night at the vet again and we basically did nothing without her. Lets get in the van! My mom hollered from down the stairs. I was anxious for the results. RING! the bell of the front door said. We walked into Maggie s room and waited for the veterinarians came out with our puppy. The door opened and Maggie came running to me with her tongue ready to lick me. I started to hug and kiss our beautiful puppy. I remembered how happy she was when I came home from school and how loyal and protective to our family. Everything is going to be perfect I said with a smile. :) :) :) :) Why Snakes have no Legs By: Z.

Time to go to work! Papa snake said. Just ONE more game of Candy Land! Tiffany answered. Yahh! Just one more game! Grant chimed in. Sorry kids, Papa snake stated, I ll be late for work! Papa snake slipped on some work shoes and walked out the door. Out of all the thirty four hundred species of snakes, it had to be the Feastern Brown Snake! Great, now he had to break his legs to get to work. He ended up having to waste his money on a pair of crutches. Everyone was asking him non stop, What happened? Go away. He would just reply back. Since papa snake was being so mean, someone grabbed one of his crutches and papa snake hit his head on a desk and passed out. Papa snake woke up in a butcher shop and saw what he thought was a mickey mouse in a wedding dress. Can I help you? The butcher said. Why does my house smell like worms? Papa asked. Excuse me? The butcher replied, this isn t your house! Your face reminds me of my pencil. Are you ok? The butcher said, Like I would care. Papa snake crawled onto the table that the butcher was chopping meat up on, then papa fell asleep on top of the sausage. Papa woke up to a big knife coming down towards his legs, CHOP!!! Come again soon! The butcher hollered at papa snake while he ate the piece of ham that the butcher just cut. Wait wait wait wait, thats not how the story went. Rewind, this is how it really goes. CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP!!!!!!! There went all of papa snakes lims. He slithered as fast as he could while everyone was pointing and laughing. Now papa snake had learned a great lesson, always look out the window before going outside. Hopefully papa would do that before he loses his life! The End Fly Away Home

by: Z. Literary Essay #1 Andrew is a very good sport because he helps out other people, doesn t complain about having a hard life, and his dad is gone on Sunday but he knows it s for the greater cause. Andrew wants to help out other people because he helps carry the pedestrian s luggage around and he gets a pay for it. He also helps out his dad to help earn enough pay for an apartment by moving around other carts and keeping the money under his shoe. Andrew doesn t complain about a hard life because he knows that it s better than living on the streets and it s warm and there s food. Also the airport teaches you a great life lesson, no matter how bad things might seem there will always be a way out. Andrew knows that his dad and has to go to his work so that he can earn money for a apartment. While his dad his out Andrew helps his dad out by carrying bags and luggage. Also he is now saving ALL of his money. Those are Nick s, Alex s and s reasons that Andrew (from Fly Away Home ) is a very good sport. He is a very good sport because he wants to help, he is calm, and he is good when his dad is gone on Sunday. The One and Only Creative Ivan by: Z. Literary Essay #2

In the story, The One and Only Ivan, Katherine Applegate shows how animals can be creative. The reasons that I think that he is creative are that Ivan knows how to draw/paint, he knows how people are feeling, and he uses what he has. First off, Ivan is very smart because he knows how to draw/paint. Surprisingly, The One and Only Ivan is a Realistic Story, and tell me, when have you ever met a gorrilla in a domain for at least 9,876 days and can draw good enough for a 10 year old to know what it is. For example, Mack enters my domain and picks up a drawing. What the heck is this? he asks. Beats me what Ivan thinks he s drawing. This is a picture of nothing. A big, black nothing I know! she exclaims. It s a beetle! See the beetle over there by Ivan s pool? Secondly, he is smart because he knows how people are feeling. At the part where Ivan gets really mad at Julie and George, he knows that they don t understand, causing him to jump around so they keep on trying to solve his puzzle. For Instance, In the ring, Julia pumps her fist in the air. Yes! she cries. I told you, Dad! There it is: H-O-M-E. Home. Aside from my claim some people disagree with it because he just sits there all day and watch the world go by. But if you think about it, he watches T.V., paints, draws, and makes me-balls to throw at people. To go to my final statement, he is smart because he uses what he has. In the scene where he is trying to think of what to paint, he looks around his domain for something to draw, he sees a little bug crawl across the ground, and most people don t draw things that un-important. For example, A shiny beetle has stopped by. Bugs often wander through my domain on their way to somewhere else. Hello, beetle, I say That s it! I ll draw him! In, The One and Only Ivan I learned that animals have the ability be creative as us sometimes, but Ivan really puts it out strong for everyone to understand. He shows it by knowing how to draw, which isn t something you see every day. He knows how the people that are around him are feeling, which is important to be able to do. And he uses what he has. (Tell me how do you do something without having it?!?!) Divergent and The Hunger Games are similar in many ways by: Z. Literary Essay #3

Have you read, the famous Hunger Games, And Divergent?! They have a totally different ways on how the book is set-up. However, didn t you notice how similar they are by morals and theme? It seems like there isn t a moral in any Sci-Fi books, but just like all books, all stories have morals. In The Hunger Games and Divergent, the moral is that sometimes you have to look into more than one s heart to trust one another. In the story Divergent, looking into other people s hearts to trust more than person happens in this book. There is a girl named Tris that is 16 years old that is about to make a decision that will make her life turn upside-down! She choses to be Dauntless. After she goes through her training, she has made some bonds will the other people there to see what their life. And make sure that she get through with life more safely. But after another faction as well as their turn on one of the leading factions! So she use that trust that she made in people to survive. In the story Hunger Games, the message is clear, she has to look at what people have done so she can put her faith in them. The Hunger Games is about a girl named Katniss that volunteered for her sister to go into the 74 th anniversary of the Hunger Games. When she goes in, she has no allies, so she is alone until she drops a Tracker Jacker (bees that were created by man with a deadly sting) nest on a group of enemies in their sleep. (killing 1) She gets stung 4 times in different places, and they cause her to hallucinate, putting her asleep for 2 days. When she wakes up, she feels cured, and she realizes the she needed an alley to get her through, and she found Rue. Now when you put you together, you notice multiple similarities between Divergent and The Hunger Games. The main characters are both female, their destiny is close, and they both have a boyfriend. But there are other similarities that when you go a little deeper, they are different! Like, they both chose their place in how people looked at them. Katniss chose a place where she knew that she might not get out alive. on the other hand, Tris doesn t know that she is in a dangerous faction. Looking into others people s hearts could change how your look on them might be. Most people could agree on that you can t just look at someone who got a bad grade on a test and say that they aren t smart. It doesn t work that way. Especially in The Hunger Games and Divergent. In both books, they have to do that so they are about to die without anyone s help. The birdcage by: Z. Post on Demand Have you read Papa s Parrot by: Cynthia Rylant? When Harry s father got the parrot, he got a birdcage with it. It might seem like a object like

that could never be important, but I can show you how it is a very important object in the story. It can show some relationships, cause and effect: Harry wouldn t realize how his father missed him, and his father would have a tighter bond. My first statement is that it shows relationships. The birdcage is keeping the bird from flying away, just like Harry s father is keeping his son away from his shop. And when you put them together, you see that the are really similar. Moving on to my second reason is cause and effect: Harry wouldn t realize how much his dad missed him. Since Harry s dad got a bird, he got a birdcage with it. If the birdcage wasn t there, however, the parrot wouldn t be there either. And in the scene where Harry s dad s parrot was repeating, Where s Harry, Miss him! It told Harry how much his dad missed him so much, he said Where s Harry, I miss him, so much, that his parrot could mimic it without his dad saying it. So if the parrot wasn t there, he wouldn t have noticed how much his dad missed him. Finally, my last statement, another cause and effect: Harry and his father would have a tighter bond. One of the reasons that Harry and his friends didn t go to the candy and nut store (besides that they had more spending money)
