BA (HONS) TELUGU (PartTime) 1. OBJECTIVES To provide opportunities to Diploma holders to acquirefurther knowledge and competence in Telugu language,literature and culture. To equip students to critically analyse issues related to thelanguage and literature. 2. GENERAL ENTRYREQUIREMENTS In accordance with the University of Mauritius General Entry Requirements for admission to undergraduate degree programmes. 3. PROGRAMMES REQUIREMENTS A post 'A' Level MGI Diploma in the subject or an equivalent qualificationacceptable to the MGI/UoM. 4. PROGRAMME DURATION Normal Maximum 2 years (PartTime) 4 years (PartTime) 5. MINIMUM CREDITS REQUIRED FOR DEGREE AWARD - 105 The MGI Diploma already counts for 60 credits. For award of the BA(Hons) Telugu degree the students must obtain 45 credits, in addition to the 60 credits earned from the Diploma, which makes a total of 105 credits. 1

Breakdown as follows: Diploma Core Modules Electives Dissertation 60 33 3 9 6. CREDITS PER YEAR (SUBJECT TO REGULATION 4) Maximum: 36 credits Minimum: 12 credits Students should register for Yearly modules and Semester modules, at the beginning of the academic year or at the start of the semester as the case may arise. 7. ASSESSMENT Each module will be assessed over 100 marks and will be as follows (unlessotherwise specified): Written Examination of a duration of 2 to 3 hours (normally a paper of 2 hours duration for modules carrying three credits, and 3 hours duration for modules carrying six credits). Such written examination will carry 70% of the total marks. Continuous assessment done during the semester/year. This will carry 30% of the total marks unless otherwise stated. Continuous assessment may be based on seminars and /or assignment/s and should include at least 1 class test. An overall total of 40% for combined Continuous Assessment (CA) and Written Examination (WE) components would be required to pass the module, without minimum thresholds within the individual CA and WE components. 2

10. MODULE OUTLINE YEAR I TEL 2005Y (3) Literary Appreciation and Criticism This module will focus on the study of the principles and theories of literary criticism as applied to Telugu Literature. Students will be initiated to the Telugu literary tradition and appreciation through a selection of texts while laying emphasis on Chandassu and Alankaaraalu. TEL 3002Y (5) Telugu Prose (Non-Fiction) In this module students will study various forms of Telugu prose (non-fiction). Different genres of the Telugu literature like essays, letters, travelogues, biographies will be studied. This will enable them to know more about the authors, their lives, works and their contribution to Telugu Literature. The works of Chalam, Narla, KrishnaSastri will enable the students to enjoy and appreciate the prose. TEL 2003Y (3) Theory and Practice of Translation This module will focus on the various theories and techniques of translation. It will help the students to know the different types of translations and translators. It will also provide the students the opportunity to practise translations of literary texts and other works such as interviews, reports, advertisements, messages and documents of various kinds. TEL 4204 (5) Ancient Telugu Poetry This module will acquaint students with the various forms of ancient poetry. The focus will be on some selected works of famous poets like Tikkana, Errana, RaghunathaBhupaludu and Shri Krishna Devarayalu. Emphasis will also be laid on the trends prevalent in Telugu poetry during the ancient period. N.B. For outline of GEM, see list offered by MGI/UoM 5

YEAR II TEL 4103 (3) Sanskrit Influence on Telugu Literature This module briefly introduces the students to the basics of Sanskrit Language and will enable them to assess the influence of Sanskrit on Telugu Language and literature. TEL 5101 (5) Telugu Folk Literature This module introduces the students to the various forms of Folk Literature in Telugu.Themes suchas oral literature, folk poetry, idioms and expressions, social customs and traditions, folk arts, dress and ornaments will be studied in details. TEL 3026Y (5) History of Andhras and Telugu Culture This module will provide the students with knowledge of the history of the Andhras, the Andhra state, Andhra rulers, temples, arts, folklore, monuments, festivals, traditions and other aspects of cultural life. Due consideration will also be given to the relationship that links language, history and culture. The economic, social and political developments of the Andhras will also be studied in this module. TEL 3000Y (5) Dissertation At the end of Year II of the programme, students should submit a dissertation of length between 8,000 and 12,000 words through research on a topic approved by the department. The dissertation should be done under the supervision of an academic staff appointed by the department. Dissertations should be submitted not later than the last working day of March. 6

INMU 1220 An Introduction to Rhythm Aesthetics being one of the ways through which one can attain salvation and as the goal of all arts is to lead one to realization of the ultimate reality, the External Self. A genuine emotional understanding, and an intellectual appreciation of rhythm and its relation to time and timelessness and one s Self as an aesthetical beauty of Eternity is hereby dealt hence, the advancement of knowledge. INMU 1221 Introduction to Indian Classical Dances Students will get acquainted with spiritual background of dance. Mythology of Dance.General introduction to seven classical forms of Dances. Three main classical dances, BharataNatyam, Kathak and Kuchipudi which are taught at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute will be dealt in detail along with demonstrations. INMU 1222 AnAppreciation of Hindustani Music This module aims at creation an awareness of the basics of Vocal Hindustani music along with a glimpse of its practical aspects, historical background and the philosophy of Indian Music. INMU 1223 Appreciation of Carnatic Music The module deals with the fundamental aspects of Carnatic music, melody, rhythm and prosody; the concept of raga, musical forms; expressions in Carnatic music, compositions and composers. BHLC 1100(1) An Introduction to Bhojpuri The course will introduce students to basic knowledge of the History of Bhojpuri, its literature, language and culture. 7

Module outline of General Education Modules offered by the Centre for Mauritian Studies MST 3123(5) Mauritian Studies: Contemporary Issues This seminar-based module provides students with the opportunity of addressing selected political, social, economic and cultural issues of contemporary Mauritius. Themes will be considered in the global context and examined from the interdisciplinary perspective. Students will be provided with extracts from books, periodicals and newspapers prior to the lectures to help them participate actively in discussions. MST 2122 (3) Mauritian Studies: Contemporary Issues This module is an introduction to Mauritian Literature through a selection of texts by authors who have written about the richness and complexities of our multilingual and multicultural society. Some of the themes are : quest for identity, diaspora, interculturalism, political struggle, gender etc MST 2124 Aspects of Contemporary History Study of some aspects of the History of Mauritius from 1947 to the present including political changes economic development and culture. MSAN(10) Introduction to Socio Cultural Anthropology Anthropology covers all aspects of human life. Socio cultural anthropology is a sub-discipline within anthropology. It examines the concept of culture: what it is, the way it works and how anthropologists study it. The major goals of cultural anthropology are to describe and explain both the unique differences and fundamental similarities in the community throughout the world. The concepts will be used to better understand our own situation and those of people around us. 8
