Welcome to our 2017-18 season. We are living in interesting times. I find myself asking: what is the role of theatre, right now? To escape into a world of sheer entertainment? Or, to confront and wrestle with the big issues facing us today? I have the great privilege of putting together a season that I believe is going to embrace us all as we navigate our current, rather tumultuous world. ASOLO REPERTORY THEATRE is where brilliant artists take on big ideas and produce world class theatre. Our 59th season is filled with incredible stories that examine how we live now, reflect our common experiences, and encourage integrity, hope, and love. Subscriptions are on sale now. Also, single tickets are on sale now to donors and subscribers and will be available to the public online beginning Friday, September 29 and at the box office and by phone beginning Monday, October 2. At Asolo Rep we are offering you a place of powerful, reverberating ideas, laughter, and joy. We are a place of true empathy where we are reminded that there s so much more that unites us than divides us. You will be challenged, provoked, and thoroughly entertained by what you see at Asolo Rep this season: utterly compelling stories and thrilling productions created by brilliant artists at the top of their game. Passion, ambition, history, music, politics, identity, family, the future and above all LOVE: that s what we re exploring this season at Asolo Rep as we launch our new all-consuming project STAGING OUR WORLD. You are already a part of it. Michael Donald Edwards Producing Artistic Director

EVITA Lyrics by TIM RICE Music by ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER Directed and Choreographed by JOSH RHODES The crowning dramatic achievement of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score, Evita is among the most passionate and memorable works in musical theater history. Eva Perón used her beauty and charisma to rise from her poverty-stricken roots on the outskirts of Buenos Aires to become the powerful and controversial First Lady of Argentina at the age of 27. She won international acclaim and adoration as a champion of the poor, while glamour, power and greed made her the world s first major political celebrity. With an electrifying score inspired by Latin, pop and jazz, including the riveting anthem, Don t Cry for Me Argentina, this iconic musical is set to dazzle with a spectacular new staging at Asolo Rep. MORNING AFTER GRACE By CAREY CRIM Directed by PETER AMSTER Hilarious and heart-warming, this unconventional new comedy tackles love, loss, and coming to terms with growing old. After hooking up at a funeral, Angus and Abigail find themselves waking up the next morning wrapped in sheets on Angus sofa. Strangers just the day before, Abigail thinks she may finally be ready to take a chance on love, but Angus has a few issues to work through first. Enter next-door neighbor Ollie, a former Detroit Tigers baseball player who now enjoys golf and yoga. Nothing is as it seems with this trio and every disclosure reveals a new perspective. RHINOCEROS By EUGÈNE IONESCO Translated by DEREK PROUSE Directed by FRANK GALATI A farce. A tragedy. A brilliant experiment for the mind. Brace yourself for an exhilarating experience staged by two-time Tony Award-winner Frank Galati. Berenger is a simple man with a simple life. He has a regular job, drinks too much, and has a flirtatious relationship with his coworker Daisy. But his day is interrupted by a rhinoceros charging through town then another and another. Berenger begins to ponder the ramifications of literally following the herd. Written just after World War II, Rhinoceros is considered a masterpiece of absurdist theatre, where the world is incomprehensible and anything a writer can imagine can happen. Don t miss this hilarious satire about mass culture, conformity, and integrity. FEBRUARY 9 APRIL 14 Previews February 7 & 8 emotionally compelling and intellectually gripping. ROE By LISA LOOMER Directed by LAVINA JADHWANI Based on the original production directed by BILL RAUCH The lawyer: a young, courageous woman arguing her case before the Supreme Court. The plaintiff: a hard-living single woman hoping for a quick end to an unwanted pregnancy. The aftermath: a place in American judicial history and a lifetime of inescapable notoriety. Lisa Loomer cuts through the headlines to deliver a clever, comic and poignant portrayal of the two women at the center of one of the most infamous court cases of all time. Taking place from the 1970s to the present with characters on both sides of the issue from decidedly pro-choice to decidedly pro-life, Roe reflects the polarization in America today while illuminating the heart and passion each person has for their cause. GLORIA By BRANDEN JACOBS-JENKINS Directed by GREG LEAMING Style. Status. Success. A group of twenty-something editorial assistants are pursuing it all at one of New York s most esteemed cultural magazines. But declining readership, diminishing advertising revenue and forced layoffs have employees tense and combative behind their cubicle walls. When a seemingly normal day at the office turns out to be anything but, these aspiring journalists are given inspiration in a way they never expected. A Pulitzer Prize-finalist and one of The New York Times Best Theater Picks of 2015, this hilariously dark and shocking play takes audiences on an unpredictable, unnerving journey to a simple and very human insight. RAGTIME Book by TERRENCE McNALLY Music by STEPHEN FLAHERTY Lyrics by LYNN AHRENS Based on the novel Ragtime by E.L. DOCTOROW Directed by PETER ROTHSTEIN A collaboration with Seattle s 5th Avenue Theatre It s the dawn of the 20th Century in New York... a time of enormous change, of new ideas, and the world is moving to the music of ragtime. This epic Tony Award-winning musical depicts the struggles, successes, hopes and dreams of a white, upper-middle class family in New Rochelle, an African-American musician and his girlfriend in Harlem, and a Jewish immigrant and his daughter on the Lower East Side. Interwoven with their stories are the newsmakers of the era including Evelyn Nesbit, Harry Houdini, Booker T. Washington, J.P. Morgan and Henry Ford. November 1-19 preview October 31 by Sophocles Directed by Greg Leaming Considered one of the greatest plays ever written and, thanks to Sigmund Freud, one of the most widely known in the modern world. Part murder mystery, part political thriller and part psychological whodunit, Sophocles Oedipus is the story of one very flawed hero discovering the awful burden of power. January 3-21 preview January 2 by Stephen Adly Guirgis Directed by Celine Rosenthal A 2011 Tony Award nominee for Best Play, The Motherf**cker with the Hat is a ferociously funny play about love, fidelity, and facing one s demons. Ex-con Jackie thinks he has finally turned his life around now that he s sober and has a new job. But when he finds a strange hat in his girlfriend s apartment, he is back on the brink in this razor-sharp comedy with a lot to say about relationships. February 21-March 11 preview February 20 by Jean Anouilh Translation by Jeremy Sams Directed by Ashley Teague In 1950s France, a group of socialites plan to present an 18th century comedy at their annual ball. They cast their friends and lovers and also enlist the help of the young, penniless woman hired as nanny for the household. But when it becomes evident that the plot is a little too close to their real lives, the fun turns disturbingly dark as the young woman finds out just how much power is wielded by the upper classes. April 18-May 5 preview April 17 by William Shakespeare Directed by Jonathan Epstein A special community collaboration with Marie Selby Botanical Gardens The Conservatory returns to glorious Selby Gardens with the play that s as merry as the day is long. The war is over and the soldiers have returned home, but between Benedick and Beatrice, the battle is just beginning. This lively showdown between the sexes is filled with missed connections and romantic hijinks, but despite all obstacles truth and love win the day. Schedule of Performances: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday at 7:30pm FSU/ASOLO smart and Friday and Saturday at 8pm Sunday at 2pm CONSERVATORY 4-play subscriptions Much Ado About Nothing: adventurous Tuesday through Saturday at 8pm Sunday, April 22 at 10:30am FOR ACTOR TRAINING just $100 theatre Dog Days Theatre returns 17-18 SEASON tickets at asolorep.org in 2018 July 10-August 26! 30 31
