Biographical/Historical Note Mary Edith Buhler, a poet and journalist, was a native of Natchez, Mississippi. Mary, her parents, John Robert Buhler (1829-1886) and Mary Buhler (nee Reynolds, 1826-1903), and her three sisters lived on the Independence Plantation near Natchez. This plantation belonged to the Smiths, grandparents of John Robert Buhler. Mary later lived and worked in New Orleans, Louisiana, and New York City. A volume of her poetry was published under the title The Grass in the Pavement" (1918). She died in 1931 or 1932. Printed items include a copy of "The grass in the pavement," monographs related to religion, history, art, and literature, programs, bulletins, and newspaper clippings. Personal papers are comprised of genealogical materials and items related to family history, a travel diary (1931) documenting Mary Buhler s trip to Barbados, and a letter (1918) from Theodore Roosevelt in which he comments on her poetry.
