It is intended to identify and communicate the significance of Calgary s public school system. These guidelines are intended to help manage the use of the corporate logo and ensure strong brand recognition for our organization. Consistent use of the CBE logo on publications, online web sites, presentations and videos, identifies them as CBE communications and helps to build and strengthen the CBE reputation and recognition in the community. Employees, designers, agencies and suppliers are encouraged to follow this guide and use the logo as described and illustrated. CBE schools, service units, departments, and programs should take steps to ensure that all communications reflect the Calgary Board of Education s graphic standards appropriately. While these guidelines are designed to maintain consistency, they also provide flexibility for a wide range of uses. BACKGROUNDER The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) logo was designed in the mid-1970 s by Joe Tsang who worked for CBE Architectural Services department. The logo was developed to incorporate the Family of Man statues located at the downtown Education Centre. The logo incorporates the stylized letters CBE behind the statues representing the Education Centre building. The logo is included on all CBE publications and electronic media. These include: advertisements, stationery, business cards, forms, memos, fax sheets, brochures, posters, newsletters, postcards, report cards, signage, web sites, presentations, videos, electronic media, and other communications. The CBE logo should be given priority placement and prominence when used in combination with other CBE school or department symbols and graphics.
GRAPHIC STANDARDS GUIDE 3 THE CBE LOGO The CBE logo is composed of two components: a graphic element and wordmark. When using the logo, both components appear together in combination. Graphic element The Family of Man statues superimposed over the letters CBE, which are stylized to form the silhouette of the Education Center building, and framed by a round cornered rectangle. Vertical alignment Graphic Element Wordmark Wordmark In addition to the graphic element, the wordmark Calgary Board of Education is set in Times Roman font (upper and lower case). The wordmark appears either centered directly below (vertical alignment) or to the right of the graphic element (horizontal alignment). LOGO DESIGN INTEGRITY Horizontal alignment To maintain the design integrity of the CBE logo,the following criteria apply: the logo is not to be modified in any way (redrawn, stretched or distorted). designated colours for the logo are not be altered. the designated font for the wordmark (Times Roman) is not to be altered. the CBE logo is not to be modified, incorporated or combined into other logos, symbols or identifiers. SIZE REQUIREMENTS When utilizing the CBE logo, give consideration to appropriate size to enhance recognition and legibility. Position the logo in a clear area free of other text and graphics to ensure proper visibility. The CBE logo should be given priority placment and prominence whenever possible. Minimum size permitted 1 cm 1 cm The logo is not to be reproduced smaller than 5/16 in height on print materials. For web graphics, the logo should not be any smaller than 25 pixels in height.
4 GRAPHIC STANDARDS GUIDE COLOUR DESIGNATION Logo on a white background To enhance recognition and maintain a professional visual identity, the CBE logo is used with consistent colour matching. Two-colour design The two designated colours for the CBE logo are Process Blue and Black. Whenever possible, the colour version of the logo is be used. One-colour design The logo may also be used in a single-colour in cases where it is not feasible to use full colour, such as faxing, photocopying, and limited colour offset or digital printing. Logo on a medium coloured background When using the logo over a background colour, it s important to retain proper visibility and legibility. The graphic element must maintain a white interior background for logo integrity, clarity and legibility. Background colours should not obscure the legibility of the wordmark. Logo on a dark coloured background with reversed wordmark. When using the logo over a strong colour or photo background, it may be necessary to use the version with the white (reverse) wordmark.
GRAPHIC STANDARDS GUIDE 5 CBE STATIONERY Business Cards The CBE logo must appear on the front of business cards. A standard business card layout has been established. It is designed to incorporate the requisite information. Textual information is printed in Helvetica Light for a clean, legible appearance. When necessary, the second side of the business card may be required. The space above the CBE mission statement may be used at the client s discretion and will increase the cost of the business cards. Letterhead The CBE logo must appear centered at the top of the letterhead. Space is provided to include the school/department name, address, phone/fax numbers. The CBE mission statement should be included along the lower edge of the page. Textual information is set in Helvetica Light Italic for a clean, legible appearance. (Process blue and black) Business envelope (#10): 9 1/2 x 4 1/8 White envelope with black text only. CBE SYSTEM FORMS All CBE forms for internal and external use must incorporate the CBE logo to identify them as an official system document. Many CBE system forms are available in electronic format on the CBE Staffroom. Alternatively, there are a number of system forms available in bulk quantities through the CBE Purchasing Services/Stores department.
6 GRAPHIC STANDARDS GUIDE CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS When dealing with corporate partnerships, sponsored projects or events, please keep the following guidelines in mind when using the CBE logo. Major sponsor position If the Calgary Board of Education is a major sponsor of the application, place the CBE logo in a prominent position that ensures recognition and legibility. Corporate partner logos should be presented smaller than the CBE logo with sufficient space around each logo to ensure clear visibility. Minor supporter position If the Calgary Board of Education is one of several sponsors or partners, ensure that the logo is legible and has adequate space around it to ensure proper recognition and visibility. Use a common color (ie. black) for all logos, and ensure that all logos are sized equally.
GRAPHIC STANDARDS GUIDE 7 LOGO FILE FORMATS Type of Project Recommended file format The CBE logo is available in a variety of file formats suited to most situations. The logo is available in EPS, TIF and JPG formats. The chart on the right is a useful guide for choosing the most appropriate file format for a project. TROUBLESHOOTING Users may encounter problems when attempting to open logo files. If you cannot open the logo file, first create a new document in your preferred software program. Second, insert, place or import the logo file into your new document. Please note that EPS files often appear to have jagged edges on-screen, however reproduce crisp printouts. EPS files are vector graphics, which means they can be resized without distortion or loss of detail. TIF and JPG files are raster graphics, which means that the detail is composed of pixels. The image quality of raster graphics will degrade as you enlarge them.
