CONCERT INFORMATION: ISRAEL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA Zubin Mehta, conductor November 5, 2017 at 8 p.m. Program: POZNANSKY Footnote, Suite for Orchestra MOZART Symphony No. 36 SCHUBERT Symphony No. 9 The 2017-18 series opens with the ISRAEL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA led by its legendary conductor ZUBIN MEHTA, who recently announced he would retire in October, 2019 after 50 awe-inspiring years. Founded by Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman, it is one of Israel s oldest and most influential cultural institutions and since its founding in 1936 has dedicated itself to presenting the world s greatest music to audiences in Israel and around the world. The program features Amit Poznansky s Footnote, originally composed as the score for the 2012 Oscarnominated Best Foreign film Footnote. Symphony No. 36 (Linz Symphony) is a grandly inventive work composed by Mozart in four days in late 1783 when he was 27 years old and Symphony No. 9, known as the Great is the final symphony completed by Franz Schubert. BEETHOVEN & MOZART ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA Pinchas Zukerman, conductor and violin January 17, 2018 at 8 p.m. Program: WEBER Der Freischütz Overture MOZART Violin Concerto No. 5 ELGAR Serenade for Strings BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 7 In 2016, the ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA (RPO) celebrated 70 years at the forefront of music-making in the UK. Its home base since 2004 at London s Cadogan Hall serves as a springboard for 14 residencies across the country, often in areas where access to live orchestral music is very limited. With a wider reach than any other large UK ensemble, the RPO has truly become Britain s national orchestra. PINCHAS ZUKERMAN has remained a violin phenomenon in the world of music for over 40 years. Over the last decade, he has become equally regarded
as a conductor, leading many of the world's top ensembles in a wide variety of the orchestral repertoire's most demanding works. The program of Beethoven and Mozart includes Carl Maria von Weber's overture to his opera Der Freischütz, one of the most famous nineteenth century works in this form; Mozart s Violin Concerto No. 5, also known as The Turkish ; and Serenade for Strings, one of Elgar s most familiar short orchestral works. Concluding the program is Beethoven s Symphony No.7, which premiered in Vienna in 1813 and is a notable example of the more ebullient side of Beethoven s compositional personality and evidence that, even after the onset of deafness, he found cause for optimism. PERLMAN & ZUKERMAN IN RECITAL Itzhak Perlman, violin Pinchas Zukerman, violin and viola Rohan De Silva, piano February 25, 2018 at 8 p.m. PERLMAN AND ZUKERMAN IN RECITAL undeniably an extraordinary evening of two of the classical music world s most celebrated artists.
