BIOGRAPHIES Patrick Boyle Newfoundland trumpeter Dr. Patrick Boyle embodies the jazz spirit by synthesizing a range of influences into a compelling original voice. He has been aptly referred to as a trumpet personality and one of Canada s top trumpet players and jazz musicians by CBC Radio. At the University of Victoria, Patrick teaches courses in Jazz Theory, Jazz Pedagogy, Jazz History, Music Business, Improvisation, and Arranging, in addition to directing the Jazz Orchestra and Vikes Band. An in-demand session player not bound by genre, Patrick can be heard on more than 50 recordings and two critically acclaimed solo albums: Still No Word (2008) and Hold Out (2005). Patrick recently performed at Carnegie Hall with tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain and drummer Steve Smith. He has also performed with Great Big Sea, Mickey Dolenz (The Monkees), Fred Penner, Plants and Animals, Mike Murley, Phil Dwyer, Uri Caine, and many others. His new record Heart of Stone will be released in 2015 and features Bill Brennan (piano), Mike Downes (bass) and Mike Billard (drums). Patrick holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Performance at the University of Toronto, an M.A. in Ethnomusicology from York University and a B.Mus from Memorial University. Patrick is a regular contributor to Canadian Musician magazine and an active clinician throughout North America. A percussionist/composer/teacher who creates music that is informed by his many years of experience with West African, South Indian and jazz traditions yet transcends most categories. Curtis is a graduate of York University and is currently in the graduate program in Ethnomusicology at the University of British Columbia. His personal musical journeys over the years have extended to villages and metropolises of Ghana, India, South Africa and Zimbabwe, and he has developed a deep knowledge of the history and performance of music from these areas. His personal mentors have included (the late) Don Wherry, Trichy Sankaran and Frederick Kwasi Dunyo. He continues to study and perform with these masters whenever possible. He leads his own ensemble, The Offering of, to play his award-winning original music, collaborates with the VICO (Vancouver Inter-Cutural Orchestra), explores Carnatic music with singer Vidyasagar Vankayala, plays Zimbabwean mbira, marimba and drums with Zhambai Trio and Zimbamoto and composes, records and tours internationall with modern taiko trailblazers Uzume Taiko. curtisandrews.ca
