The 2018 Lake Winni Music Camp Brochure Week One: July 22-28, 2018 Week Two: August 5-11, 2018 About the Music Camp About the Music Camp The only Overnight Music Program in New England that offers Classical, Jazz, Rock, Pop, Folk and Vocal music in a non-competitive environment. The Lake Winnipesaukee Music Camp is an overnight camp and recreational camp for musicians age 10-18. The camp takes place at the Geneva Point Center campground located on New Hampshire s Lake Winnipesaukee with picturesque and magnificent settings and over 200 acres of land. Since 1919, Geneva Point Center has been hosting and providing programs fostering a sense of community in individuals and groups. The New Hampshire Independent School of Music is proud to offer this non-competitive Music Camp for young people. Structured for the beginner to advanced musician, all activities are separated by interest and ability. Students participate in elective classes as well as focused study on their chosen instrument. Students are also separated into groups dependent upon their specific musical interest, i.e. Chamber Ensemble, Jazz Band, Folk Group, Chorus. Even absolute beginners can participate through the Learn an Instrument program, where they choose an instrument to learn during the Camp week. Each day, students study music from 9am to 2pm. After 2pm, students are free to participate in recreational activities such as canoeing, swimming, sports, and much more on beautiful Lakes Winnipesaukee organized by seasoned counselors. All activities are supervised by adults. Music Camp students list their instrument(s) on the Registration Form. This defines the concentration of musical study for the student during the week. All music activities are conducted by New Hampshire Independent School of Music faculty and their trained assistants. All students are broken up into various ensemble groups based on their interest (classical, string, folk, pop, rock, jazz, vocal, etc.). These different groups then rehearse a major work that will be performed at the end of the camp week. Additionally, each year there are electives such as Improvisation Workshop, Composition and Music Theory that any student can participate in.

Music Faculty, Counselors & Interns New Hampshire Independent School of Music faculty are seasoned music teachers that are specialists in their chosen discipline. Additionally, we employ 4 Interns and 6 Counselors and 1 Head Counselor to engage with the students during recreational and practice time. The Interns and Counselors in our program all started off as students at the music camp so they are well versed in all aspects of the program. Counselors are also in charge of individual cabins. The camp accepts no more than 60 students in total. For more information about the teachers, please see the Faculty section of our website. Campground and Housing For Geneva Point Center related information, please visit their website at: http://www.genevapoint.org/ Lake Winni Music Camp is held at the Geneva Point Campground, a private 200-acre campus on Lake Winnipesaukee. Classes take place in the Chapel Building, The Barn, Siftar Cottage and Pine Haven. Dinning is at the Inn. There is a campground store for snacks and other goods, a post office, laundry and of course lots of hiking, a central field, and the beach. Cabins are located at Geneva Woods and there is a screened-in Program Lodge that is used for evening activities. Each Cabin has 8 bunks in it and each cabin has a Counselor in charge of that cabin. Bathrooms and showers are also located in the Geneva Woods area for easy access. The cabins are rustic and there is limited electricity in each cabin.

Music Classes and Electives Each student customizes their schedule so they participate in the programs they choose. Students choose 5 classes. These classes meet everyday from Monday through Friday four classes in the morning, then lunch, then one afternoon class. Each class is 50 minutes in length. You can choose from a wide variety of classes. Noelle calls all the students and interviews them about class choices prior to creating the camp schedule. Typical Classes that are offered every year: The camp has faculty that specialize in the following: voice and choral programs, string trios/quartets/orchestras, classical ensembles and orchestra, piano performance and technique, folk/traditional music (including Celtic music), Jazz, Rock and Pop, Blues, Funk/Fusion, New Orleans and Swing, Punk Rock and Space Jam/Jam Band, Composition, Harmony and Music Theory, and Improvisational methods. We always offer classes that focus on these diverse musical offerings. Although some classes change every year, below is what was offered for two of the five Blocks at the 2016 camp and is presented here as an example. ---BLOCK C (10:50am 11:40am)--Classical and Traditional Choices Symphony Orchestra, Noelle Beaudin & Monica Hardesty Open to all instruments with at least 2 years experience of solid playing. We will be learning actual orchestral movements not the chopped up versions. There are many parts in the orchestra, so don t be intimidated. If your part is too difficult, I can rewrite it and the string section has the help of our seasoned violinist Monica Hardesty. This is the most fun you ll ever have in an Orchestra. a Capella Group, Will Gunn Open to ALL levels of vocalist. This vocal group will concentrate on a Capella music, listening and singing together. We will learn one traditional SATB piece and one modern popular piece. Piano Duets, Caleb Jaster Love piano duets? We do too! Rock, Blues, Pop & Folk Itta Bena Blues Bash, Jeremy Morse Take a ride up Highway 61, and learn to play blues with a feeling! We'll follow in the tradition of the Kings as we pursue the vintage blues sound. Open to all instruments and vocalists.

Jazz, Funk/Fusion Beginner Jam Band, Tim Gilmore & Don Williams Don t be intimidated by the jam band. Even if you ve only been playing your instrument for a couple of months you can learn to improvise and play in an ensemble. Tim and Tom will guide you through the art of listening and improvisation. Improvisational Workshop, Tom Robinson & Matt Langley Improvisational Workshop - open to any instrumentalist/vocalist willing to experiment with sound. Jared s Big Black Hole, Jared Bozza & Dalton Puffer Are you an advanced rock/jazz/funk/fusion/space jam kinda player? Then enter the world of the space jam. Open to all woodwinds, brass, percussion and double bass. It s like a classical concert band but oh so much better. We ll be studying Vaughn Williams, Grainger, and other composers of awesome Symphonic Wind repertoire. And hey, if there are any harpists this year you would fit in this group just fine too! String Ensemble, Monica Hardest & Caleb Jaster Open to strings (Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass) and Piano of any level. Play the classic repertoire of this type of ensemble Schubert, Beethoven, Mozart and many more! Rock, Blues, Pop & Folk Rue Boswell, Jeremy Morse Old tyme swing with vocal harmonies. Learn to play and sing in the style of the Sisters Boswell, Andrews, and other great groups of the 1930s. Jazz, Funk/Fusion Traditional Jazz Band, Tom Robinson & Don Williams Not total improvisation. Jazz band pieces read from charts and not lead sheets. Open to all instruments and vocalists. NOLA Street Band, Matt Langley & Tim Gilmore Explore the grooves and sounds of New Orleans Street Bands. Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, electric Guitars and Basses. All abilities. TUBA!!! Bring your TUBA! How does the Program work? Music Camp activities are from 9am to 2:00pm, Monday through Friday. The final concert is on Saturday from 12:00pm to 2:30pm with an intermission. Check-out is directly after this concert. This concert is also open to the public. All classes are 50 minutes long and take place in buildings around Geneva Point Center. All students receive schedules at checkin so that they know where their classes meet. Additionally, Music Camp Counselors are always on duty to escort students between classes. If a student wishes to change any of their classes during the course of the week that is not a problem at all. Music Camp Schedules All schedules are highly individualized. After receiving the registration and deposit, each student is interviewed so that we can best determine what classes they would like to participate in. For instance, if a student pianist only wanted to participate in classical ensembles their schedule would reflect that. Likewise, if a student singer only wanted to participate in folk and bluegrass ensembles their schedule would reflect that. Here is an example schedule for a student with Saxophone as their focus of study for the week: 8:30-9:00am Breakfast (announcements or other information provided during this time too) 9:00-9:50 Advanced Jazz Ensemble 9:55-10:45 Baroque Saxophone Ensemble 10:50-11:40 Orchestra 11:45-12:30 Latin Jazz Ensemble 12:30-1:10 - Lunch 1:10-2:00pm Improvisation Workshop 2:00-2:30pm Cabin Time 2:30-4:00pm Organized Recreational Activities (beach, field, movie) 4:00-5:30pm Practice/Free Time 5:30-6:00pm Dinner 6:00-9:00pm Evening Activity (Movie, Open Mic Night, Talent Show, Night Hikes, etc.)

Tuition, Registration, Instruments, Music Week One: July 22-28, 2018 Week Two: August 5-11, 2018 Music Camp Tuition and Registration: $795.00 Tuition includes everything: food and lodging, instruction, materials, and camp T-shirt. Tuition should be made payable to Lake Winni Music Camp. Information about payment and mailing is on the Registration Form, which is a separate document available for download from our website. Print out the Registration form, fill it out, and mail it back to us with a Deposit check for $200. We do not accept credit cards. This camp program has been incredibly popular over the last several years. Four years ago we added a second week and it was very successfully attended. We hope this will prevent the waiting list problem that we have experienced in the past and that it will allow students that would not normally be able to make it to camp to be able to join us. Students can sign up for one week or both. There is no difference in program scheduling. Remember, registration for this camp is limited to 50 students. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis with specific disciplines (i.e. piano, guitar, drums) only accepting a limited amount of students. If you have any questions regarding which music discipline to choose for your child, call or email the School and we can assist you and get your child registered quickly and properly. All parents will receive a confirmation packet and additional camp information after the registration deadline. Student Instruments and Music Students that sign up for Strings, Brass, Woodwinds, Guitar, and Bass must bring their own instruments with them. Piano students do not need to bring their instruments - there will be several pianos on campus to practice on. Drummers should bring at least a small portion of their set snare/ride/high-hat/bass drum. Instruments will be secured when not in use. Students MUST bring their music stands with them to camp. Questions? If you have any Music Camp related questions, please call Noelle on the NHISOM line at 603-284-6550. You may also email the School at info@nhisom.org and visit us online at http://nhisom.org/
