FNP3 Series Tri-Lens for Nichia NS6x083 and NS6x183 LEDs High efficiency 4 beams available MR-16 size tri-lens The FNP3 tri-lens offers MR16 size lenses specifically designed for the Nichia 083/183 series LEDs. A software-optimized aspheric profile enables the generation of four different beam patterns: Narrow, Narrow Spot, Medium, and Wide beams. The tri-lens high collection efficiency typically delivers up to 85% of the total flux emitted by the LEDs. Lens holders are clear polycarbonate and provide proper alignment between the LEDs and the lenses. The lens holder can be heat-staked to the PCB to provide a secure assembly. Typical applications are: MR-16 LED lamps Reading Lamps Architectural lighting Interior lighting Entertainment lighting For technical information about Nichia NS6x083/183 LEDs, please refer to the Nichia website at: www.nichia.co.jp/en FRAEN Corporation OMG FRAEN Corporation Srl 80 Newcrossing Road Via delle Querce, 22 Reading MA 01867 27020 Trivolzio (PV) USA Italy Phone: +1 781.205.5300 Phone: +39 0382 1933.1 Fax: +1 781.942.2426 Fax: +39 0382 1933.239 Inquiries: optics@fraen.com Website: FraenOMG.com For ordering information, please contact: ARROW NAFTA Countries Telephone: 1-888-9LIGHT1 email: lightingsolutions@arrow.com Please contact Fraen S.r.l. for European distributor s information Countries Email: optics@fraen.com 1/6 FNP3 series lenses for Nichia 083/183 LEDs
General Characteristics Materials Lens Material Optical Grade PMMA Holder Material Polycarbonate: Clear Operating Temperature range -40 C / + 80 C Storage Temperature range -40 C / + 80 C Average transmittance in visible spectrum (400 700nm) >90%, as measured using 3mm thick Optical Grade PMMA. Please note that flow lines and weld lines on the external surfaces of the lenses are acceptable if the optical performance of the tri-lens is within the specification described in the section OPTICAL CHARACTERISTICS IMPORTANT NOTE Lenses handling and cleaning: Handling: Always use gloves to handle lenses and/or handle the lenses only by the flange. Never touch the outside surfaces of the lenses with fingers; finger oils and contamination will absorb or refract light. Cleaning: Clean lenses only if necessary. Use only soap and water to clean the surfaces and lenses. Never expose the lenses to solvents such as alcohol, as it will damage the plastic. See Illumination Calculations below. Luminous intensity depends on the flux binning and tolerances of the LEDs. Please refer to the datasheets for more details on flux binning. (2) FWHM is the full angle where the beam intensity is half the on-axis peak intensity (3) Field angle is the full angle where the beam intensity is 10% of the on-axis peak intensity 3/6 FNP3 series lenses for Nichia 083/183 LEDs
Illumination Calculations To calculate intensity (cd): Find the central spot on-axis intensity value in the table above, then multiply this value by the luminous flux (lm) from your LED (refer to the LED datasheet for nominal lumen values.) For a more accurate calculation, refer to the intensity ranking (binning) tables on the datasheet for the specific LED. Example calculations: If the Fraen narrow beam lens FNP-N2-N083-0R is used on a cool white Nichia NS6W083 LED at 300 ma, the typical luminous flux of the LED is 60 lumens (lm). The N2 lens on-axis intensity is 10.7cd/lm. The calculation is: (10.7 cd/lm) x (60 lm) = 642 cd peak on-axis (one lens & LED). For three 60 lumen output LEDs and a FNP-N2 tri-lens: 642 x 3 = 1926 candela peak on-axis. The beam angle specified in the table above is 11 degrees full beam-width measured at halfpeak. This means at +/- 5.5 degrees off-axis (half of 11 degrees), the tri-lens intensity should be half of 1926 candela or 963 candelas. One candela at 1-meter distance produces 1 Lux. This means the tri-lens peak intensity at 1 meter will be 1926 lux. The intensity decreases as a function of the distance squared, so at 2 meters the peak intensity will be 1926 / (2 2 ) = 482 lux. At 3 meters distance, the peak intensity will be 1926 / (3 2 ) = 214 lux. Mechanical Characteristics Flat faces The Narrow and Narrow Spot tri-lens have flat faces with NO micro-lenses. The Narrow N1 tri-lens has a textured front face. The Narrow Spot N2 tri-lens has a polished front face Micro-lenses The Medium and Wide tri-lens have micro-lenses on the front surface. The Medium M1 tri-lens has lightly textured micro-lenses. The Wide W1 tri-lens has polished micro-lenses. Figure 1: The tri-lens assemblies can be identified by the front face surfaces of the lenses. The FNP3 series tri-lenses are available only assembled to a holder. For single FNP lens options, please see the FNP datasheet. 4/6 FNP3 series lenses for Nichia 083/183 LEDs
Figure 2: Cross-section view shows the lens touches the top of the Nichia 083. Figure 3: The three legs on the tri-lens require clearance holes in the circuit board. The legs have a stepped diameter and set the proper height of the tri-lens relative to the LEDs. 5/6 FNP3 series lenses for Nichia 083/183 LEDs
Figure 4: For best fit to the FNP3 tri-lens, the PCB should have thru holes and LEDs located as shown above. The rotation of the LEDs is not controlled or affected by the tri-lens holder, and can be decided by the user.
