12 9 DIRECTOR S NOTES and BIO When Elizabeth von Arnim published her novel Enchanted April in 1922, she spoke into a very specific time in British history. World War I had just ended four years earlier, and the country was realizing just how large a toll it had taken. The Brits were mourning their countrymen and beginning to discover the new cynical world the Great War had created. The older Victorian generation was giving way to the "Moderns" of the Jazz Age. Similarly, certain women in Britain had just been given the right to vote in 1918. The growth of women's rights would cause many to reexamine their assumptions of women's roles in society and marriage. It is amongst all this change, this emotional change, we find our characters. Two seemingly unremarkable housewives will discover what happens when they attempt take their happiness into their own hands. It's amazing how one simple vacation can completely change your perspective. Shari Shari Wassergord Previously at CTI, Shari directed Once Upon a Mattress and The Boys Next Door. Since moving to Kansas City five years ago, Shari met her husband, got married, bought a house, and worked at several community theatres. CTI will always be special for being the first theatre in the area to give her a chance. Shari likes science fiction novels and internet cats.
