Most of the studies done are under the auspices of the National Digital Archives Program, with an emphasis on applying digital archives technologies to the establishment of digital video (and audio) archives and business platforms. Digital Museum of Taiwan s Social and Humanities Video Archives is one of the first of such an application. Through an efficient searching and management software, and an integrated environment and software for producing and managing digital video and audio knowledge, a fully functional digital video archive was established, which has in its database a close to 3,000-hour video footages for public to use free of charge. The experience is now being applied to build a 700-hour high quality digital video archive for the Government Information Office. Television industry in Taiwan started the plan to digitize their valuable news footage and TV programs in 2001. Most television stations outsource their digitization project to commercial companies, who then integrates digital archives software and hardware from commercially available sources. The primary goal of the government-led digital video (and audio) archive programs are to preserve and make available audiovisual records important to Taiwan society. Commercial television stations, on the other hands, are keen in digitizing their video footage and television programs either because of a visionary profitability of such an archive or a simple need to facilitate the use of their news footages in a multi-channel broadcasting environment.
