Romeo & Juliet A Requiem RELAXED PERFORMANCE PRE-VISIT STORIES
prologue The play takes place a year after Romeo and Juliet s death. Their stories are being retold and are being acted out by their families and the people that saw them through their love story. The characters Lord Montague, Lady Montague, Lord Capulet, Lady Capulet, Friar Lawrence, and the Nurse will all act like those who have died (Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio, and Tybalt). The parents of Romeo Montague and the parents of Juliet Capulet gather in the town of Verona to remember the deaths of their children, as well as the others that have died (Tybalt, Paris, and Mercutio). The Montagues and the Capulets begin to fight, and the Friar reminds them that Romeo and Juliet would have wanted the families to get along.
scene 1 scene 2 The Nurse acts as Juliet. *The characters take a break from the retelling of Romeo and Juliet s love story in order to reflect on their roles and emotions* Lady Capulet remembers her daughter meeting Romeo for the first time. She tells Juliet that she should think about marrying Paris. Lord Montague describes Romeo going to the Capulets dinner.
scene 3 scene 4 Lord Montague acts as Romeo. The Friar acts as Mercutio. Lord Capulet acts as Tybalt. Lord Montague acts as Romeo. Lady Capulet acts as Juliet. Romeo tells Mercutio that because of the dream he had last night, he thinks that something important is going to happen if he goes to the Capulets. At the Capulet s, Tybalt and Romeo discuss the rivalry between the Capulets and the Montagues. Tybalt speaks of his family s hatred for the Montague family. Juliet meets Romeo for the first time and Romeo tells Juliet how beautiful she is.
scene 5 *The characters take a break from the retelling of Romeo and Juliet s love story in order to reflect on their roles and emotions* Lady Capulet and the Nurse reflect on Juliet s beauty and how much they miss her. scene 6 Lady Capulet acts as Juliet. Lord Montague acts as Romeo. Juliet tells Romeo how ironic it is that she is falling in love with someone her family hates. Lady Montague comes back as a ghost after her tragic death from sadness after her son died (the flower corsage represents her death).
scene 7 scene 8 Lady Montague acts as Romeo and Lady Capulet acts as Juliet. Lord Montague acts as Romeo. Lord Capulet acts as Juliet. Romeo and Juliet are in love and want to get married, but are worried about their families fighting. Romeo proposes marriage to Juliet and she accepts. Romeo tells the Friar that he is in love with Juliet and wants to marry her. The Friar agrees to marries them in secret.
scene 9 *The characters take a break from the retelling of Romeo and Juliet s love story in order to reflect on their roles and emotions* The Friar and Lord Capulet talk about how Romeo and Juliet s wedding day was the day Tybalt died. scene 10 Lord Capulet acts as Tybalt. The Friar acts as Mercutio. Lord Montague acts as Romeo. Tybalt and Mercutio fight and Romeo tries to stop it. Tybalt kills Mercutio, who is Romeo s best friend. Romeo is angry and kills Tybalt for revenge.
scene 12 & scene 13 Nurse and Lady Capulet act as Juliet. After their wedding, Juliet waits in her room for Romeo. Lady Capulet acts as Juliet. Lord Montague acts as Romeo. Nurse tells Juliet that Tybalt was killed by Romeo. The Friar delivers a message to Romeo from the Prince of Verona. The Friar explains to Romeo that he must leave Verona and never come back.
scene 14 *The characters take a break from the retelling of Romeo and Juliet s love story in order to reflect on their roles and emotions* Lord Capulet is sad that Juliet never married Paris because he thinks that it would have made her happy. scene 15 Lady Capulet acts as Paris. Lord Capulet promises Paris that the wedding will be on Thursday.
scene 16 Lady Montague acts as Juliet and Lord Montague acts as Romeo. Before Romeo leaves, he kisses Juliet one last time. Lady Capulet tells Juliet that she will marry Paris on Thursday, but Juliet refuses. Lord Capulet tells Juliet that she will not be allowed to live in their home if she does not marry Paris. Juliet plans see the Friar. If he is unable to help her, she says that she will kill herself. scene 17 Lady Montague acts as Juliet. To escape marrying Paris, Juliet drinks a magic potion which makes her sleep for two days. Juliet wants to trick her family into thinking that she is dead, while she is sleeping, and then her plan is to run away with Romeo.
scene 18 scene 19 Lady Montague acts as Juliet. Lady Montague acts as Juliet. Juliet apologizes to her father, and says she will marry Paris. Juliet is scared that the potion won t work or that something will go wrong. She asks to be left alone in her room so she can secretly take the potion. She drinks the potion and falls asleep.
scene 20 scene 22 Lord Montague acts as Romeo. The Nurse acts as Balthasar. Lord Capulet acts as Paris. Lord Montague acts as Romeo. Lady Capulet acts as Juliet. Balthasar tells Romeo that Juliet is dead and is buried in her family s tomb. Romeo and Paris fight and Romeo kills Paris. Romeo decides he would rather die than live in a world without Juliet. He gets poison shaped like a flower and goes to the Capulet s family tomb. Romeo drinks the poison and dies. Juliet wakes up from her sleeping potion and sees Romeo dead. Juliet is deeply sad, and she stabs herself and dies.
scene 23 Lady Capulet & Nurse act as Juliet. Lord Capulet acts as Romeo. The characters say goodbye and remember happier times through acting out a scene that captures the happiness and love shared between Romeo and Juliet.
