A Performance of Mussorgsky s Pictures at an E HIBITION X FEATURING Winner of the 2014 Youth Concerto Competition Work to be announced. Mussorgsky/Ravel Donizetti Additional works to be announced Pictures at an Exhibition Overture to the opera Anna Bolena Sounds and ideas hang in the air, I am gulping and overeating, and can barely manage to scribble them on paper. The transitions are good on the promenade. I want to work more quickly and reliably. My physiognomy can be seen in the interludes. So far I think it s well turned... Ideas, melodies come to me of their own accord, like a banquet of music I can hardly manage to put them down on paper fast enough. Modest Mussorgsky, June 1874, written while composing Pictures.

Friday JUNE 6, 2014 Bellevue 7:30 p.m. Sunday JUNE 8, 2014 Eastlake Performing Arts Center TICKETS Adult - $20 Senior/Student - $15 Children 10 or under - Free Available at the door or online at Ticketweb.com (206) 517-7777 www.sammamishsymphony.org Sammamish A tribute to a departed artist, Pictures at an Exhibition, has become one of the most recorded and performed showpieces of the orchestral repertoire. Originally composed as a grand work for piano by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, the suite intrigued musicians for decades thereafter to try their hand at turning the black-and-white of the piano keys into the full color of the symphony orchestra. Maurice Ravel s orchestration far outstrips all others in its brilliance and sheer ingenuity and in turn has been the inspiration for still further rescoring efforts, including rock band, brass ensemble, acoustic guitar, and massed accordions. However, Ravel s arrangement remains the best-known guide to Mussorgsky s picture collection. YOUTH CONCERTO COMPETITION The Sammamish Symphony Orchestra is proud to support young musicians in our community through our Annual Youth Concerto Competition. This event provides area high school students the opportunity to compete individually before a panel of professional judges. The winner performs a solo work with the symphony in June. The symphony also encourages music student participation throughout our concert season and is dedicated to providing educational outreach that promotes a lifelong passion for musicianship and instrumental performance.
