About the Shanghai Nan Yang Model High School Shanghai Nan Yang Model High School was founded in 1901. With a history of 110 years, it is a member of the World Leading School Union. Shanghai Nan Yang Model High School is currently a full time high school and experimental model school in Shanghai. Chinese government leaders have paid a lot of attention to Shanghai Nan Yang Model High School. In 1950, Chairman Mao Zedong inscribed xian feng (young pioneers) on the school s newspaper wall to encourage all students. Another former Chairman Jiang Zemin once wrote a letter; in this letter, he expressed his expectations for the school to develop and maintain high standards. He urged the school to cultivate students who embodied high standards as well. Over the past 110 years, Shanghai Nan Yang Model High School has always pursued its school motto of Diligence, Thrift, Devotion and Honesty. It has developed school spirit, which encourages solid study, practical work, a simple life and a strong body. Of the thirty thousand graduates, forty six have become members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and academics from other countries and regions. This alumnus is full of experts with high reputations, as well as famous people in various fields of politics, education, academy and art. Shanghai Nan Yang Model High School has also established fruitful outcomes in art education, environmental education, national defense education and social activities. Its symphony orchestra group and basketball team are also highly acclaimed.
About the Conductor Mr. Wang Yongji is a First Grade Conductor in China (First Grade is the top, according to Chinese official Classification). He used to be the conductor for Shanghai Peking-Opera House, Permanent and Chief Conductor for Shanghai Movie Orchestra Group and Art Director for Shanghai National Orchestra. Since 2003, he has led the Shanghai Nan Yang Model High School Symphony Orchestra to participate in vital performances and competitions throughout the world. The Shanghai Nan Yang Model High School Symphony Orchestra won the Gold Award at the 15th Sydney International Music Festival, with Wang Yongji as the conductor. Having conducted hundreds of pieces for movies and dramatic performances, Wang Yongji has become renowned as a conductor with the highest number of name appearances on the big screen. About the Guest Conductor David C. McCormick has a diverse life as conductor, orchestra musician, professor, university administrator, community activist, husband and father. He has served on the Midwest Clinic staff and board of directors for several decades, and is currently secretary. Academic preparation was in his native Destrehan, Louisiana (high school diploma), Southeastern Louisiana University (BMusEd), and Northwestern University (MMus in tuba performance and PhD in music). He and his wife Connie live in Fort Myers, Florida.
About the Shanghai Nan Yang Model High School Symphony Orchestra The Shanghai Nan Yang Model High School Symphony Orchestra has been in existence since 1991, with the renowned conductor Mr. Cao Peng as its Art Director and Chief Conductor. Under the guidance of professional teachers and instrumentalists from the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, all members have nearly reached professional levels. After years of rehearsals and practices, the Shanghai Nan Yang Model High School Symphony Orchestra is able to perform a number of well-known and high level symphonic works such as The Sorcerers Apprentice, Tchaikovsky; Overture 1812 and Rapsodie Espagnol. It has developed a unique, dexterous and youthful style. The Shanghai Nan Yang Model High School Symphony Orchestra regularly participates in diverse nationwide art festivals and international communication performances with student groups from the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan. The orchestra group has won many awards, including first prize at the first three Chinese Middle and Primary Schools Art Festivals. The orchestra also won first prize at the 15th Sydney International Music Festival and 35th Austrian International Youth Culture and Arts Exchange. These accolades speak to the orchestra s professional instrumental skills, good manners and artistic accomplishment of its members.
