Page 2 Library Newsletter Take the stress out of Referencing Use an online reference manager to take the stress out of managing your references. They can automate much of the work of organising and formatting citations and bibliographies. Online reference managers can connect to online sources such as Google and most databases. They can output bibliographies in numerous referencing styles including Harvard UL, which is the referencing style used by LYIT students, with the exception of Law students. The Cite it Right manual is a guide to the Harvard UL referencing style and it can be accessed from the library webpage. The library currently provides training on both Zotero and EndNote online referencing managers. Notes on using Zotero and EndNote are accessible on the library webpage. If you require assistance, please contact the library at library@lyit.ie for further information. Note: Users of EndNote m ust authenticate their account by accessing it on campus on an annual basis. Library Information Skills Workshops The library launched a series of Library Information Skills Workshops throughout Semester 1. These workshops were designed to assist users to become familiar with using Zotero and other online resources. All library induction/research skills sessions must be booked by your lecturers. In the Letterkenny campus, contact edel.hession@lyit.ie and in the TCK library contact terri.mckenna@lyit.ie to book library induction and research skills sessions. Both library and classroom based induction and research skills sessions are provided for all students. Database and Zotero training sessions The LYIT library is now offering students weekly database and Zotero training sessions on Monday mornings from 11.00 11.30am during term time. The aim of the sessions is to help students develop their research skills so that they can make the best use of the library resources available to them and achieve success in their academic studies. Library staff, Ciara and Denise, are on hand to show how good information skills are necessary for searching, retrieving and evaluating information in the most effective way. The sessions are informal and booking is not necessary. For more information please contact the Library Information Desk. EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) provides users with an easy, yet powerful, means of accessing the majority of an institutes information resources through a single search. The search option can seek out relevant information from electronic databases, ejournals and books. New Library website The new look Library Website went live in mid December 2017. WordPress Content Management system was used for the design and creation of the website. The same information remains but with a more modern look and feel. We will strive to continuously improve the user experience.

Page 3 Library Newsletter Multimedia Suites for students The library has upgraded six group study rooms with multimedia smart televisions. These may be used by you for academic purposes such as preparing for presentations and accessing material relevant to your course. The televisions may be synchronised to a laptop or tablet for both Apple and android devices. The monitors also provide access to training webinars for library resources and academic online resources. The multimedia smart televisions are available in all group study rooms. As group study rooms 5 and 6 are in close proximity to the main study area of the library, audio facilities are prohibited in these rooms during the academic year. The remote controls for the new multimedia screens are available to borrow at the Information Desk. Please present your LYIT student ID card and the remote control will be issued to you for three hours. A fine of 1 per hour will apply if it is returned late. The remote control must not leave the library. Valuable sheet music collection The Library has received a very significant donation, via Pat Campbell, lecturer in Digital Design of 19 th and early 20 th century sheet music. These were very kindly donated by Billy Patterson of that renowned musical family. Included amongst the works are much Irish music of the era,in the English language. These include Irish Folk Songs by A.P Graves and Charles Wood, published in London 1897. Amongst songs popular in the period in this volume are The blackbird and the thrush, Credhe s lament for Cail, The song of Niamh of the golden tresses. Also received is The Historical Songs and Ballads of Ireland, arranged by Herbert Hughes.,Volume 1. This volume includes Kitty from Coleraine, Silent,O Moyle, about The Children of Lir, words by Thomas Moore, She is far from the Land, and General Monroe. We also received The Hills of Donegal, by P.J.O Reilly and W. Sanderson, published in London by Boosey in 1914. Richard Wagner s Celebrated Songs. Moffat s 202 Gems of Irish Melody, including jigs, reels, hornpipes etc., published in Glasgow. The Fairy Tales of Eireann, by Lockton and Coates, bought in 1921. Classical material includes Beethoven s Sonata Op.2,No.1 F Moll fur das pianoforte, published in Berlin. Sacred songs include the words of Psalm LXXXIV, How lovely are thy dwellings. These are a fraction of the material received and we are indebted to Pat Campbell and Billy Patterson for this invaluable addition to the Library music collection and these will complement the large range of Western Art Music LPs which we have. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness Read DL 2018 Chosen Title A Monster Calls is a story about a boy called Connor who is struggling to come to terms with his mother s terminal illness. Unexpectedly, he is visited one night by a monster, asking if he can tell him three stories. In return, he wants the most dangerous thing of all from Connor; the truth. It is a heartbreaking but uplifting tale of healing and, above all, the courage it takes to survive. My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante From one of Italy s most acclaimed authors, comes this ravishing and generous-hearted novel about a friendship that lasts a lifetime. The story of Elena and Lila begins in the 1950s in a poor but vibrant neighbourhood on the outskirts of Naples. Ferrante has created a memorable portrait of two women, but My Brilliant Friend is also the story of a nation. Through the lives of Elena and Lila, Ferrante gives her readers the story of a neighbourhood, a city and a country undergoing momentous change. Library Induction and Information Skills Training Library induction tours are provided for all new students. If you were late starting your course or missed your induction, please contact the library to arrange a session. Database training and other information skills sessions are ongoing throughout the academic year. Group sessions are usually organised through lecturers, but students can contact library staff directly to arrange a one to one session. Group Study Room The group study room is heavily used at this time of year so make sure you make a booking a week in advance. Do this by contacting the library by phone or email. Do you fancy a break from study? Visit our BOOK CORNER and select something a bit more recreational!! The Little Book of Sound co-authored by Niall Bressie Breslin, Dr. Malie Coyne and Susan Quirke on behalf of A Lust for Life The origins of The Little Book of Sound come from August 2017 s phenomenally successful #Sound Effect campaign run by A Lust for Life and Pieta House, which simply asked the nation to share acts of soundness, however small. The campaign was based on a core belief that people are fundamentally sound, a message that often gets lost in modern society. This pocket guide encourages people to be sound to themselves as well as others. It includes a little bit of the science supporting how being sound to others and to ourselves has a huge positive impact on our mind, bodies and the world around us.
