ART APPLIED RESEARCH IN TOXICOLOGY GUIDES FOR AUTHORS Editorial Policy The journal APPLIED RESEARCH IN TOXICOLOGY, is replacing the Brazilian Journal of Toxicology (Revista Brasileira de Toxicologia), and has the characteristics to be a specialized periodical, peer reviewed and widely distributed in Brazil and other countries, on a quarterly basis. It publishes original research of basic or applied Toxicology, which contribute to the knowledge and development of toxicology and related sciences. It is edited by the Brazilian Society of Toxicology- SBTox (www.sbtox.org.br) with the participation of the Brazilian Society of Environmental Mutagenesis, Carcinongenesis and Teratogenesis (SBMCTA - www.sbmcta.org.br) and the Brazilian Association of Toxicological Assistence and Information Centres (ABRACIT www.abracit.org.br) ART is a journal open access to the international scientific community, and accepts contributions in the form of original articles, short communications and critical review articles. It also accepts good quality case reports from different regions of the world. The APPLIED RESEARCH IN TOXICOLOGY adopts the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: Writing and Editing for Biomedical Publication", proposed by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, known as "Vancouver Style" (http://www.icmje.org ). The responsibility for the content of the manuscript is solely the authors, being forbidden the simultaneous submission of the total or part of the work to any other journal.

Page charges This journal has no page charges INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION Submission of an article implies that the work has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract or as part of an academic thesis), that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication is approved by all authors and if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language without the written consent of the copyright-holder. Published manuscripts become the property of ART and for that, all submitted work must be accompanied by the copyright transfer agreement signed by all authors. After receiving the manuscript, editors forward it to peer review. Reviewers are asked to opine by the acceptance, rejection or reformulation of the article. Copies of the opinions are forwarded to the authors, ensuring anonymity. The Editors welcome suggestions by the authors of the names and addresses of up to five individuals who could expertly review the paper, and who are not from the same institutions as the authors. The Editors, reserve the right to use these or other reviewers. Original Articles Manuscripts must be written in English, and submitted on-line on file compatible with Office 2007 or higher. Typing should be on A4 paper, Arial 12, double-spaced, with all margins of 2.5 cm and numbering all pages sequentially. The manuscript should contain title page, abstract, keywords, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, conclusions, acknowledgments, references, figures, tables and figure legends. Please write your text in good English. Authors who feel their manuscript may require editing to eliminate possible grammatical or spelling errors and to conform to correct scientific English must sent it to correction by a native speaker.

Identification Page a) Title of article: must be concise and complete, b) Authors: full name of each author c) Affiliation: Identification of the institution to which each author is affiliated d) Corresponding author: provide the corresponding author with the journal, including phone, fax and e-mail address. Abstracts The abstract should contain clear and succinct information regarding the purpose, methods, results and conclusions, but without division into topics. Should not exceed 250 words. Keywords Should represent the content of the article, with a maximum of 6 terms after its abstract Introduction State the objectives of the work and provide an adequate and updated background in order to highlight the progress made on the issue. Should clearly establish the purpose of the work to justify its development and importance. Material and Methods Provide sufficient detail to allow the work to be reproduced. Methods already published should be indicated by a reference: only relevant modifications should be described. A description of the methods should be brief, but sufficiently clear to enable a thorough understanding and reproduction. A description of the statistical methods and indication of the use of specific softwares must be included. Results Should be clear and concise, with the least possible discussion or interpretation..

Discussion This should explore the significance of the results of the work, not repeat them. It should link them to data previously reported in the literature, avoiding extensive citations. Conclusions The main conclusions of the study may be presented in a short Conclusions section, which may stand alone or included in the Discussion section. Acknowledgements Should be restricted to what is necessary. Information of financial support should be included in this item. Ethics in research The authors should adhere to the requirements and standards dictated by official agencies relating to ethics in research with humans and experimental animals. The work involving experiments or methodologies that require review by an Ethics in Research Committee must be accompanied by the number of the approval. Short Communications The text should be short and direct, corresponding to a maximum of one printed page. The procedure is identical to the publication of original articles, but does not require division. Submition of at least three keywords is required Critical reviews Must match the critical review of relevant subject, based on current literature and the author's results. Tables and figures (graphs, formulas, pictures, diagrams, etc.).

Tables and figures should be numbered with Arabic numerals in the order that they appear in the text, and should complement it and not duplicate it. The figures should have the title placed at the bottom, while Tables should have a short and descriptive the title at the top. Do not repeat the same data in figures and tables. Both tables and figures should be presented on separate sheets. Tables or figures from other publications must be accompanied by written permission for the reproduction of them, the attainment of which is the responsibility of the authors. Abbreviations When nonstandard abbreviations is used, it must be preceded by the full name on first reference, and should not use abbreviations in the title or abstract. References References should be restricted to the essential content of the article and be numbered in the order they appear in the text. The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the style used by MEDLINE (list available on http://www.nlm.nih.gov/tsd/serials/lsiou.html). Abstracts should not be used as a reference and personal communications should be avoided unless it is information unavailable in essential and public source, in this case cite in the text the person and date of communication in brackets. In the text, references should be cited by Arabic numerals in parentheses to the right of the text. In multiple references can be cited in sequence the first and last number (eg 4-8).
