He lives with his beautiul wie Taryn and their two children, Cadence Belle and Coda Blake. The slow back and orth izzicato reresents grandma s old rocking chair gently swaying back and orth. Sitting across rom a glowing ire, grandma slis into ond recollections o times ast. When she was little, she used to sit with her mother in their brand new rocking chair and sing songs by the ire. As she grew older the chair was assed down to her, and her own children enjoyed laying in it. They would try to rock themselves just like their mother, but it was very diicult because their legs didn t touch the ground. The years rushed by. Her children grew u and let the house, but they returned to visit oten with their own children. Grandma remembers the songs her mother used to sing; now, she sings them to her grandchildren in the very same chair. It has been a beautiul journey through lie or grandma, and now it is time or her to relax by the ire in the old rocking chair. Rehearsal Suggestions The izzicato notes reresent the steady ulse o grandma s chair, and they should not be rushed. Have the students subdivide by counting and 2 and 3 out loud while laying. This verbal counting will imrove the ulse and hel students to avoid comressing the izz. notes and rushing the rhythm. Tell students that i they go too ast grandma will all out o her chair! The melody starts in the st violins. Students should make bow changes as smooth as ossible. Focus on the right hand wrist and make sure it is not too sti. The bow changes should be seamless and connected, without auses to change direction. When 2nd violins and violas come in at bar, they should be careul not to come in too strong. Exlain to students that they need to be very sensitive so as to not wake u grandma. In measure 30, the violas and 2 nd violins lay a beautiul countermelody. Have students lay with ull bows and lots o conidence tell them this is their chance to shine! Make sure the st violin, cello, and bass do not overower the countermelody in this section. In measure 38, the cello and bass take over the melody. Intonation is key here: emhasize the imortance o good tuning by jokingly exlaining that i they don t lay in tune, comosers are only going to write melodies in the violin art! A iano dynamic is indicated in measure 4 to kee the uer strings rom overowering the low strings melody. The end ades out graceully, just like grandma alling aslee. These inal izz. notes should be very sot and tender. Students should ay close attention to ollowing the conductor in these delicate inal moments o the iece. Good luck with your erormance o The Old Rocking Chair!
