A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO ENDNOTE ONLINE EndNote Online is a free tool which can help you collect, share, and organise your references. This tutorial will teach you how to use EndNote Online by guiding you through creating an account for the first time and demonstrating its key features with easy to follow examples.

WHAT IS ENDNOTE ONLINE? EndNote Online, otherwise known as EndNote Web and EndNote Basic, is a free tool that can help you with referencing. Here s how: Collect Add references by importing direct from online databases, Google Scholar, and Albert Sloman Library catalogue Save Store your references safely in one place, which can be viewed on any device once you sign in to your EndNote account. Organise and Share Sort your references into groups for different assignments. For shared work, invite other users as editors to a group. This course will show you how you can use these features to make research and referencing easier and more effective.

WHY USE ENDNOTE ONLINE? EndNote Online is easy to use, free, and can make the process of referencing much simpler. Benefits of EndNote It saves time and effort Instead of typing out references, you can add them to your work directly. It helps you stay organised You can store references in different groups for each topic. It helps you reference correctly When you add a source, EndNote formats it correctly for you. Once you create an account and get started, you will see how useful EndNote online can be.

GETTING STARTED: CREATING AN ACCOUNT Firstly, you ll need to be logged on to a computer on campus. This gives your account full access to the databases the University of Essex has access to. 1 You ll need to create an account via the Web Of Knowledge page: wok.mimas.ac.uk 2 Click Alternative Link. Under Institutional users sign in, choose UK Federation then click Go. Search for and select University of Essex then click Continue. 3 Enter your University username and password when prompted then click Login. 4 Once you have been taken to the Web of Science platform, click the Sign-in button on the right-hand side of the top toolbar, then Register. Follow the on-screen instructions to Register then click Submit changes. Note: Remember that this password is not linked to your University of Essex account and you will not be asked to change it every 3 months, so choose something memorable. 5 Finally, you will be asked to verify your (Essex) email address to confirm your account.

SIGNING IN TO YOUR ACCOUNT After you have confirmed your email, you can sign in via www.myendnoteweb.com by entering your email and EndNote password. Bookmark this page so you can easily access it later. You should be able to access the University of Essex databases from anywhere by using institutional access (signing in via your Essex login). To check, click the Collect tab on your EndNote homepage. U Essex should show up on the drop down menu.

ADDING A REFERENCE MANUALLY You can add references manually, or import them directly from the database where you found the source. If you already know reference you want to save, you can enter the information manually. When you create a bibliography or citation later, EndNote will format it correctly for you. 1 Select Collect from the menu bar at the top of your homepage. 2 Select New Reference from the options now available under the menu. 3 Choose your reference type (e.g. book) from the dropdown menu, then fill in the information required. Once you have finished, click the Save button at the top or bottom. The reference will now be saved in All my references and Unfiled on the left hand side of the homepage.

IMPORTING REFERENCES FROM A DATABASE: WEB OF SCIENCE EndNote allows you to import a reference directly, without having to type it out yourself. For our first example, we will show how to do this from within EndNote using Web of Science. Importing a reference from Web of Science 1 Click Web of Science in the top left corner of your EndNote homepage. This will open WOS in a new tab. 2 In the search bar, type in key words, e.g. oil spill. The drop down menu will also let you search by author, date, etc. You can narrow down your search results by using the options on the left. 3 When you have found the reference(s) you want to add, tick the square box(es) on the left. Click the Save to EndNote Online button on top of the list. You can choose to include the abstract, then click Send. Note: The way you import references depends on the database you are using. Most will have an option to select export to EndNote.

IMPORTING A REFERENCE FROM U ESSEX 1 Click Collect then online search. 2 Select U Essex from the drop down menu, then Connect. 3 Search for keywords, author, or other criteria, (e.g type Darwin and select Author ) then press search. 4 Just like with WOS, tick the boxes of the references you want to add then select Add to group then unfiled from the drop down menu at the top. Once you have created groups, you can save your references directly into a group.

ORGANISING REFERENCES Sorting references 1 In My references, click sort by in the top right hand corner, then selecting from the drop down menu. For example, you can sort by the date you added them to the library, newest to oldest. 2 If you want to sort by Author, Year, or Title, simply click the heading. A little arrow will appear, if you click it more than once it will reorder them by either ascending or descending order. Creating groups 1 You can organise your references into groups, and add a reference directly to its group. 2 Click Organise tab from the menu at the top of the page, then select New group. Enter a name for your group then click Ok. 3 You can then go to All my references, check the ones you want to add, and select the group you want to add them to from the drop down menu. Sharing references 1 To work on a shared project you can share your groups with other EndNote users. 2 Click Organize and Manage my groups. 3 Tick the share box next to the references group you want to share. Then select manage sharing. 4 Select Start sharing this group, then enter the email address of the person you want to share with into the pop-up window. You can allow them to edit it, or set it to read only. The groups you are sharing will have a silhouette icon.

CITE WHILE YOU WRITE The Cite while you write feature of EndNote adds a toolbar to Microsoft Word which allows you to add references to your document as you go. To use this feature, you will need to have the plug-in file installed. If you are using a computer on campus it will already be installed, but if you are using your own device, you ll need to install the plug-in first. Installing the Cite while you write plug-in 1 Make sure all Microsoft programmes are closed (e.g. Word and Outlook) before you start the installation. 2 In your EndNote online account homepage, click Downloads and choose the correct option for Mac or PC. 3 Click Run and accept all the default settings. Click finish to complete the installation. In Word, you should now see an EndNote tool-bar. From there, select the dropdown menu Style and choose the correct style to format your references (e.g. Harvard). You can find your department s referencing style at: libwww.essex.ac.uk/referencing.htm You can add and edit citations by using the drop-down menu in the tool-bar. Now you will be able to use the Cite while you write feature in Word.

USING CITE WHILE YOU WRITE WITH MICROSOFT WORD Open Word and click the EndNote toolbar. It may say EndNote x7 as the default. You ll need to change this to recognise your library from EndNote Online. Linking the tool-bar to your EndNote Online account: Select Preferences then Application and select EndNote online. Enter your email address and your endnote password, then check the box to remember your details and keep you logged in. This will now connect to your EndNote online account. Setting your referencing style: Click the Style option in the toolbar, then select the correct style. Inserting a citation into the text: Click the mouse in the position where you want to add your citation, and then select insert citation on the top bar. A box will pop up. Type in a detail of the reference, such as the author s name, then click find. Relevant references will pop up. Select the correct one and click insert. You can change the settings here if you need to. The citation will be inserted into the text as well as the bibliographical reference at the end of your document.
