Essential Library Skills How the print collection is arranged and your borrowing entitlements
Borrowing Books You need a valid TCD ID card to borrow books Books are issued and returned at the Service Counters or at Fastlane Self-Service Borrowing Books However you must come to the Service Counters to borrow and return Counter Reserve material and to have Closed Access books issued to you (More about this later) Fines for overdue LEN books are 50c per day rising to 1 per day after two weeks Fines for overdue Counter Reserve Collection books are 25c per hour

Borrowing Books Fastlane Self-Service Machines Books may be borrowed & returned here (except Counter Reserve items) You can only check out books if you are entitled to borrow them You may be prevented from borrowing if you owe fines or have overdue books Take care to follow instructions on screen
Undergraduate and Diploma Lending Material You may borrow up to four items in total at any one time from: Berkeley, Lecky, Ussher (BLU) Libraries LEN (with Yellow Sticker) one-week loan LEN (no Yellow Sticker) four-week loan MUS LEN one-week loan Plus up to an additional four P-MUS LEN four-week loan Hamilton Library S-LEN one-week loan No four-week lending collection for undergraduates John Stearne Medical Library SJ one-week loan No four-week lending collection for undergraduates
Other Categories of Reader Higher Degree Postgraduate Students You may borrow up to ten items in total at any one time Normally from Open Access or Closed Access Four items from the Undergraduate Lending Collection (if all other Open Access or Closed Access copies are on loan Students Registered with Disability Services You may borrow eight items in total, including material from Open Access and Closed Access May include Four items from the Undergraduate Lending Collection Staff You may borrow twenty items in total from Open Access and Closed Access Further details are available from: http://www.tcd.ie/library/using-library/borrowing/
Open Shelf and Closed Access In addition to purchasing books, Trinity College Library Dublin is entitled to a copy of every book and journal published in Great Britain and Ireland. Open Shelf: books available to read in the Library. This collection is divided into: Reference Collection Counter Reserve Collection Undergraduate Lending Collection Open Access Collection (mainly Legal Deposit material) Closed Access: books placed in Library storage, i.e., Stacks and the Santry Book Repository. More on this later
Open Shelf: Reference Material Includes the prefixes REF, BIB, PER and THESIS Journals, Reference Works, Bibliographies, Early Printed Books, Manuscripts, Theses Cannot be removed from the Library
Open Shelf: Counter Reserve Collection Located by the counters in the Iveagh Hall (Berkeley Library), Hamilton Library and John Stearne Medical Library (JSML) Material: Multiple copies of books in heavy demand Lecture notes Other materials deposited by lecturers Material cannot be removed from the Library You may borrow up to four items Five-hour loan period must return books to the counter A book return box will be available outside barrier at the reserve end of the Counter so that students can return reserve items after 7.45 when Counter is shut Heavy fines for overdue items 25 cent per hour or part of an hour
Open Access Collection Undergraduates cannot borrow this material but can use the books in the Library for study or research If an Open Access copy is on loan and there are no lending copies available you can ask for the item to be recalled. To recall an item e-mail libraryrecalls@tcd.ie with relevant details. More information on the Library website
Essential Library Skills Requesting material from Closed Access (Stacks and Santry Book Repository)
Closed Access 80% of the Library s print collection is stored in Stacks and in the Santry Book Repository Material is requested online or, if it is a journal or Early Printed Book, by completing a call slip Requests from Stacks are delivered to your choice of Library Counter, usually on the same day Requests from Santry are usually delivered the next day No more than five requests in one day Material is held in the Library for three days to be collected Undergraduates must read this material in the Library When finished with the material, return it via Fastlane and place it in the book return box beside the machines as instructed, or if you wish to use it again come to the Counter and we will keep it for you

Renewing books You will be unable to renew a Library book if: You have outstanding fines You have overdue books You have exceeded the amount of Online Renewals permitted: 4-week loans can be renewed once only 1-week loans can be renewed a maximum of 7 times Books cannot be renewed by phone or e-mail Online renewing - books are due back before the time the Library starts to close on the assigned date and not midnight on that date (so before 9.45pm Mon-Fri and before 3.45pm on Sat) If you have problems renewing contact the Duty Librarian or Service Counter staff in person
Reserving books If all lending copies of a book are currently on loan, you can place a reservation by clicking the Request button on the catalogue record (similar to requesting Closed Access books online) You will be unable to reserve a Library book if: You have outstanding fines You have overdue books There are lending copies available You are trying to reserve material you are not entitled to borrow Books cannot be reserved by phone or e-mail If you have problems reserving, contact the Duty Librarian or Service Counter staff in person
