Dear Friends of the Pops As we come to the end of my first year with the Pops I want to thank you for your continued support. You are the backbone of the Pops and I m grateful for your comments and advice as we move into 2014. My training has come from a number of great conductors and musicians over the years and I m eternally grateful for the advice and direction I was provided by the founder of the Queensland Pops Orchestra the late Colin Harper MBE OAM. His inspiration drove the Pops to the greatest heights so in his honour we start a year long celebration of the 30 th Anniversary of the Pops in December 2013. It will be a year to remember. For those who have been Friends of the Pops for many years and for those who have only recently joined the Pops family I welcome you all back for 2014. I am determined to grow the body of Friends back to its heyday and so I welcome your support to bring a friend to become a Friend. Your Friends' membership is an important communication tool for me and I hope the real benefits provided by the company through ticket discounts are welcome by you all. This discount is our gift to you for your friendship and support, and your gift to the Pops is the introduction of your friends to this wonderful orchestra. Growth and development have risks and in 2014 we will again return to the matinee and evening concerts model. This means we need to grow our audience numbers by almost 70% to support such a decision. You have asked for this growth and I m calling on you for your help in going forward. I thank you most sincerely for that support in advance. The 2014 program will go on sale in coming weeks and I m sure you won t be disappointed. Our first concert will be on Saturday 8 February (2.30pm and 8.00pm) and it will be a Celtic Celebration the likes of which you have not seen in QPAC for many a year. I ve sub-titled the concert St Patrick meets Robbie Burns. You will receive the next Newsletter in the mail, or online, in the coming weeks but here is a sneak preview to whet your appetite. Remember one of the great advantages of being a Friend is that you have two weeks in which you can purchase your favourite seats before the ticket sales are opened up to the general public. Please take advantage of this time as we know this series will be very popular. Now is the time to renew your Friends membership for 2014 to ensure you get these great discounts and advantages. As we have done this year there will be a number of Friends' functions in 2014. I am proposing a 30 th Anniversary Lunch mid-year (date to be confirmed early in 2014) and another High Tea which was a huge success this year. There is also the potential for a wine tasting but more about that in early 2014. As the year comes to a close I again thank you for your support and I hope you will all be able to join us for what will be an amazing concert, the 30 th Anniversary New Year's Eve Concert at QPAC. My warmest regards to you all from Rhonda and me for the Festive Season. Patrick Pickett 18 November 2013 Congratulations to Mrs Jeanette Woodyatt who has won a free membership for 2014 after her friend became a Friend of the Pops. Thank you to all the Friends of the Pops who are getting ready for next year and have paid the 2014 membership already. This will streamline ticket purchases when the new season goes on sale to the Friends on 20 November. Friends membership paid directly to Queensland Pops Orchestra. Celtic Celebration 8 February 2014 2:30pm matinee & 8pm "St Patrick meets Robbie Burns" In the time honoured tradition of "Scotland the Brave", the Pops returns with its boldest Celtic Celebration ever. Internationally renowned Celtic soprano Kathleen Procter-Moore will headline this most amazing Celtic program, as the Pops launches its 30th Anniversary Subscription Series. One of the great Irish bands of our day is Queensland based Murphys Pigs. Their traditional music features well known Irish melodies played on authentic Celtic instruments. Without doubt the Queensland Police Pipes and Drums are one of the most valuable Queensland assets and they will bring an amazing repertoire of well known and excitingly new Scottish music. As always, the Watkins Academy of Irish Dance and Thistle Highland Dance Studio, will set the stage on fire with the swirl of their kilts and their high leaping kicks. This concert will deliver all you ever wanted from the Celtic genre and more.
