Apps Parents Should Know About If you monitor your children s phones and ipods for their safety, here is the first of a 3-part series detailing some apps to be aware of: YikYak - A new app that allows anonymous text-only posts that can be viewed by 500 Yakkers who are nearest to the person who wrote the Yak, as determined by GPS tracking. Users are being exposed to explicit content and personal attacks. Schools are starting to block the App on their Wi-Fi. Kik Messenger - A private messenger app that allows kids to send private messages that their parents can t see, and is an easy tool for sexting. There is also very little you can do to verify the identity of someone on Kik, which obviously poses the risk of predators chatting with your child. May TV Premieres Destination America kicks off Meat Week, marking its two-year anniversary with a celebration of timeless cookout traditions: grills, smoke and meat, beginning Memorial Day, May 26. Chosin premieres on American Heroes Channel on Monday, May 26 at 8:00 p.m. recounting the Battle of Chosin, an early conflict of the Korean War, the battle was fought in subfreezing temperatures amongst rugged terrain clashing 15,000 U.S. Marine soldiers with 67,000 Chinese troops. ACM Presents An All-Star Salute to the Troops on Tuesday, May 20 at 8:00 p.m. on CBS, featuring the biggest names in country music, including Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Hunter Hayes. Jack Is Back in 24 Fox announced that its 12-episode event series, 24: Live Another Day, will premiere with a special two-hour episode on Monday, May 5, 2014 before settling into its regular Monday time slot at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 12. Set four years after the events of Season 8, the series will loosely adhere to the real time concept. While it will still cover the events of a single day, with each episode corresponding to an hour, there will be jumps forward in time between certain episodes. In Our Community Breakfast for Kid Bikes The Marseilles Masonic Lodge #417 will hold its 3rd Annual Breakfast with the Soldiers on Saturday, May 24, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. - noon. The menu consists of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, fried potatoes, and choice of milk, coffee or orange juice for only $10 per person. Marseilles Masonic Lodge #417 has been helping children with special needs obtain a customized bike designed for them. Currently, we had the pleasure to assist eight children. Two bikes were given to Marseilles residents Nick Stacy and Melinda Heffell. All proceeds from the breakfast stay in Marseilles to help our residents. Those who know a child that could use our help, please contact a lodge member or drop off the information in the Lodge Hall s mail slot. Salad Bar Luncheon The Marseilles First Congregational Church will sponsor its 31st Annual Salad Bar Luncheon from 11:00 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. on Friday, May 9, 2014 at the church at 255 E. Bluff St. It is an all-you-caneat salad buffet. The church is handicapped accessible with ample parking. Tickets are $10.00 and may be purchased at the door. Carry outs will be delivered to residents in Marseilles only. Orders must be placed by 9:00 a.m. Thursday, May 8. To place a delivery order, call 815-795-5336 or 815-795-4018. Spring Rummage Sales The Marseilles Tourism and Park Committee is sponsoring the Marseilles Spring Rummage Sales, on Saturday May 17th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sign up at Marseilles City Hall at 209 Lincoln St. The LAST day for sign up will be Friday, May 9th so that the City Wide Area Maps can be produced.
