OVERVIEW With decades of experience in home audio, pro audio and various sound technologies for the music industry, Yamaha s entry into audio systems for conferencing is an easy and natural evolution. Conferencing, whether video- or audio-based, hinges on the quality of the sound something many video conferencing developers seem to forget. The most beautiful video image isn t much good if you can t understand what the person is saying. With the introduction of the Yamaha Digital Sound Projector a few years ago, the company s engineering team created a major step forward in managing the directional properties of sound, and they foresaw the clear applications for directional microphones in the conferencing arena. While many companies have products that serve this market, the technology for removing background noise, eliminating echo, and focusing on the desired sound has not been fully realized until now. Yamaha s new Projectphone line brings decades of sound expertise to solve the performance problems of today s conferencing applications. The Projectphone s amazing capabilities come from three core design elements. First, a direction-sensing array of microphones covers distinct segments or the total meeting space, allowing the Projectphone to know where a meeting participant is located. Second, an array of high quality speakers is also included as part of each Projectphone system, delivering complete audio input and output in a single device. Third, advanced logic is built into each Projectphone s circuitry, sorting out and managing all of the information coming and going through the microphones and speakers. With its complete intelligent handling of audio, the Projectphone can detect sounds in the range of human voice and de-emphasize others. It can eliminate echo by not passing along microphone input signals that match what just left the speakers. It can direct cameras to focus on the part of the room where the current speaker is detected. And it does all of this with Yamaha s legendary sound quality. Projectphones are available in a number of configurations for applications from small office audio conferencing to high-end boardroom video conferencing. Versions support USB, Ethernet, analog phone and direct analog audio connections. There s a Projectphone designed to meet your conferencing needs, and we invite you to let us help you find the model that s right for you.

BENEFITS Adaptive Echo Canceling Conferencing solutions often deliver an echo or distortion in the sound when microphones pick up the audio that is emitted from the speakers. This can create a garbled effect, and often distracts the person speaking as they hear an echo of themselves as they talk. When this occurs, the technology is hindering fluid communication instead of facilitating it. The Projectphone contains speakers and microphones in the same box, all of which are managed by advanced logic and circuitry developed with decades of audio experience. The Projectphone continuously analyzes the sounds emitted by its speakers and environmental sound reflections, and does not accept those sounds back in through the microphones. The result is an echo-free conferencing experience. Conference rooms can be noisy, and participants can be calling in from many locations. If a caller is at an airport, trade show or other location with heavy background noise, it can often be disruptive to the entire conference as the sound re-circulates through the system. With the Projectphone, all the sound delivered is heard only once, allowing everyone on a Projectphone conference to follow the conversation. Noise Reduction In addition to echo, background noise of other varieties can hinder effective communication. The Projectphone s advanced logic recognizes and distinguishes sounds within the range of human voice, and de-emphasizes the rest. With an array of sensitive directional microphones, only those hearing voices are even activated, providing greater clarity with fewer distractions. This is a very helpful feature when non-voice sounds are part of the environment. Projector fans, tapping pens, air conditioning systems, typing and other sounds are common in conferencing environments, often interrupting the smooth delivery of voice communication. The Projectphone reduces these distractions, ensuring that your meeting participants will follow the conversation. Direction-Sensing Microphone Arrays A challenge for video conferencing since its inception has been how to deliver clear, close-up images of the person speaking. Solutions have ranged from having a meeting director operate a camera with a joystick (or with their hands), to

BENEFITS (CON T) simply providing a whole room image where everyone appears too small to be clearly discernable. Poor focus, bad camera management, human error and other issues commonly make video a distraction and annoyance. Given its expense and complexity, this isn t acceptable. The Projectphone carries an array of highly sensitive directional microphones tuned to focus on human voice-range sounds. It knows the direction of human voices in a room, and delivers that information to its advanced logic processor. This data can be delivered to various devices that manage cameras, from robotic camera pivots to camera switching equipment for activating and deactivating specific cameras on command (think of how cameras are managed on talk shows or on live TV news shows). Utilizing industry-standard protocols, it works with many solutions from a number of manufacturers. This capability makes the Projectphone a useful addition to new or existing video conferencing installations. In any setting where more than a few people gather for a video conference, enabling automatic close-up images of the person speaking is a huge and important advantage in optimizing meeting effectiveness. When your conference participants can clearly hear the person speaking, and see the expression on their face, they will be able to follow the conversation.

TECHNOLOGY directional microphone array echo canceling speakers DIRECTIONAL MICROPHONE ARRAY Every Projectphone contains an array of sensitive, high-quality, directional microphones attuned to target human voice and reject ambient noise. Features As many as 32 individual microphones (varies by model) are positioned to identify the location of the individual speaker in a room. DELAY IN SOUND TRANSMISSION SOUND SOURCE Speaker DSP SIGNAL PROCESSING location data can be relayed to industry-standard video conferencing equipment to direct video promptly and accurately, diminishing the need for human-directed video. Underlying logic is tuned to target human voice frequencies, so ambient noises like keyboards, projector fans, pen tapping and other distractions are reduced or eliminated. Quality audio and a clear image of the person speaking helps everyone follow the conversation. Identifying the Location of the Person Speaking The Projectphone s powerful digital signal processing technology instantaneously determines speaker location by analyzing the time variances in when a sound is received by each microphone. Easy-to-use controls also allow targeted areas to be emphasized or de-emphasized for specific applications or when certain ambient noises are overbearing. Users can also easily de-activate directional features whenever desired. The Projectphone s logic is easily directed toward targets large or small, depending on the needs of each application. The microphone arrays can be directed to look for individuals anywhere in a room, in general locations, or zones relative to the Projectphone, or just for particular speakers in precise locations. These are referred to as Tracking Mode, Zone Mode and Spot Mode. Selecting the right mode for your meeting will further enable the Projectphone s powerful echo canceling and ambient noise reduction to maximize the quality of your discussion and help you follow the conversation.

TECHNOLOGY directional microphone array echo canceling speakers DIRECTIONAL MICROPHONE ARRAY Tracking Mode Best when the meeting has several participants in multiple areas of the room, or when the speakers are moving around during the meeting. This mode continuously seeks human voice and directs the Projectphone s attention and logic accordingly. It can also direct video on-the-fly to optimize a video conferencing experience. Even though there are no specific regions targeted or excluded, the Projectphone s powerful echo canceling and ambient noise reduction logic is still operating fully, providing the unprecedented audio quality that only a Projectphone can deliver. Zone Mode Best for quiet rooms, where ambient noise is controlled and a number of participants are in various locations. This mode keeps selected zones of the room active for the Projectphone at all times, so all speakers are equally emphasized if they are within the selected zones. This mode also allows specific areas to be off, so sounds from nonparticipating meeting attendees or other undesired noises can be reduced or eliminated. Spot Mode Best for noisy environments with a few meeting participants. This mode allows the selection of specific locations to be active with all other areas turned off. When using this mode, the participants must remain in the selected area to be properly heard. If meeting in a noisy room or open area, or where interruptions are frequent, this operating mode can optimize the ability of the Projectphone s digital signal processing to deliver a clear conversation in spite of the distraction.

TECHNOLOGY directional microphone array echo canceling speakers DEFINITIVE ECHO CANCELING Smooth Conversation, even with Simultaneous Speaking Echo is a phenomenon that occurs when the microphones pick up the audio from the speakers in an audio conference system. Drawing on decades developing audio technology, the Projectphone s adaptive echo canceler contains leading-edge logic and algorithms developed to eliminate echoes and reproduce voices with the highest clarity. In short, the Projectphone recognizes the sound waves it has produced, and will not allow them back in through the microphones. In addition, the PJP-100H incorporates 3-channel adaptive echo canceler that enables you to remotely specify audio output from each speaker position. What is Echo? Echo is a phenomenon that occurs when microphones pick up the audio reproduced from the speakers. Echo tends to occur more often with an audio conference system than with a telephone set on which the microphone and speaker are isolated from each other. The Projectphone incorporates a highperformance adaptive echo canceler that reproduces voices with higher clarity by eliminating echoes. Adaptive Capability Learns as it Functions Adaptive echo canceling includes algorithms that continuously evaluate what is coming into the microphones, comparing it with the sound produced by the speakers. It quickly determines the impact of larger rooms or rooms with high reverberation, adjusting its performance to optimize any conference situation. SMALL ROOM ACOUSTIC ROOM WIDE OPEN SPACE

TECHNOLOGY directional microphone array echo canceling speakers HI-FI SPEAKER ARRAY Acoustic Design All Projectphones are equipped with multiple premium speakers to deliver the type of sound you ve come to expect from Yamaha products. Each Projectphone model is designed to optimize audio delivery for specific room types, and descriptions of target environments can be found on the individual product pages. In each case the Projectphone has been engineered to account for the expected orientation of conference desks, chairs and participants. In the case of the PJP-100, the most commonly selected for traditional rectangular conference room tables, a synthesized Virtual Source Sound acoustic wavefront delivers quality audio utilizing the horn loading effect, reflecting directed sound off the surface of the table. Similarly, each model implements the latest audio technology appropriate for its intended application. Divide Mode: Assign Remote Locations to specific Projectphone speakers* Echo canceling works on all three zones independently. First in the world! Zones remain independent without crossing, even when multiple participants are speaking simultaneously. For PJP-100 models only using a mesh connection. This unique feature set enhances the user experience when conferencing with more than one remote location. Up to three different zones can be specified on the Projectphone, so that voices from three different locations are always heard from a specific set of speakers on the Projectphone. This greatly assists intuitive understanding of where a participant is located whenever they begin speaking, making conferencing even more natural and life-like. * FOR PJP-100H and PJP-50R MODELS ONLY USING A MESH CONNECTION
