Synlite : cost-effective solutions for straight forward systems Despite new capabilities and functionality, there will always be applications where these options and features could result in an over engineered solution. More straightforward and easily affordable modules may be better suited to the application s requirements. To address that need, Axon has created - a series of modules for, amongst others, frame synchronization, embedding, de-embedding, up- and down conversion. Based on the same robust and high quality design as the other Synapse modules, modules are ready for heavy-duty use. Importantly, Synlite modules come at a very attractive price. They are fully compatible with all Synapse and Cortex products and can be mixed with all other modules from the Synapse range.... keeping it simple! is 100% Synapse Synapse is a modular system containing multiple 19 frames, active hot swappable cards and (mostly) passive connector panels. It is designed to support demanding mission critical applications in the broadcast industry. Although Synapse has a unique approach and is unequalled in its flexibility, you could position the system in what the industry calls glue, infrastructure equipment or just modular equipment. Reprogammability In order to reduce the investment in hardware a number of the modules can be reprogrammed to perform different functionality. You can, for example, buy an HDS05 down converter and reprogram it to an HSU05 up converter by simply downloading the relevant firmware from our website and upload it onto the module. Which of the modules have this functionality can be found in the product descriptions. The system explained Synapse is unique and very flexible but its basic core and construction adheres to a simple design concept. A brief technical description of the basic elements and how they are constructed: The processing cards connect directly into the frame via a high density connector that powers the cards with a single voltage supplied by a hot swappable (dual redundant) power supply. The single rail of a relativity high 30V DC ensures stable operation and low supply currents that ensures high efficiency in the supply and its distribution rail. All voltages that are needed on the active modules, including +5V, +3.3V, +2.5V, +1.8V even 1.5V and +/-15V are derived from the main supply voltage with local switched mode regulators. These local regulators ensure stable low noise, local supply voltages and inter card isolation. 4

The size of the Synapse card and the connector panel is the result of several design criteria that were defined in the original design. Today we are very happy that we have this fairly large PCB in order to maximize the processing power requested by modern broadcast infrastructures. Life-time free firmware upgrades Synapse modules are hardware platforms whose functionality is determined by the particular version of firmware they are running. As our industry evolves we see new standards evolve and new infrastructure challenges each requiring new functions and features. For example S2016, the HD version (and in some countries also the SD version) of VI and WSS. This VANC based aspect ratio descriptor was added to existing products after their introduction, free of charge. Occasionally our customers require an additional feature or find a bug. These will be added or solved resulting in constantly evolving and improving products. The new firmware is placed on www.axon.tv for anybody to use, even if the product is over a decade old. Free of charge monitoring software Synapse comes with a configuration, control and monitoring software package. The AXON Cortex software application provides comprehensive configuration, monitoring and maintenance tools for the Synapse system. This Windows based application includes functionality that enables the user to remotely: Configure a complex system in a short time frame View, record and archive the system events and report these to the user using a hierarchical system status Control devices using a user intuitive graphical user interface Maintain the system over its lifetime The standard version of Cortex is downloadable from the AXON website www.axon.tv free of charge. Additional cost options for the following features are also available: Panel view: allows users to create their own control and monitoring interface Router control*: allows control of third party routers using native router protocols. Please contact AXONor your local distributor for the protocols that we support SNMP*: allows for the monitoring and control of third party equipment using SNMP Tally and Mnemonic Management option (Cortex-TM): This option collects Tally information from devices such as Production switchers, routers and DVE s within a facility which contribute to the on air and/or ISO outputs required. These are then logically conditioned with the use of configured and changeable rules to drive the tally of devices such as Camera Control Units, Under Monitor Displays (UMDs) and VTR s * Panel view option is required as a pre-requisite. It is capable of inserting or appending 4 free-running AES/ EBU digital audio channels (8 channels). The core of the HEB05 consists of a four group embedder-block which gives a total of 16 audio channels into four groups. In addition, four ADD-ON cards can be connected to create a routing matrix. One ADD-ON card is needed to get 16 embedded channels (DIO48). The architecture of Emb_A to Emb_D blocks is identical. The local inputs have the opportunity to do additional Phase and Gain corrections (on the fly). It is an audio extractor that outputs four AES/EBU streams on the board itself and four ADD-ON audio signals via the local bus to two ADD-ON cards. The preset based control of this card makes it ideal for repeated corrections or standard channel swapping occasions in a multi lingual (combined with Dolby E) environment. If dynamic control is required the card can still perform this task as every preset is remote controllable by a third party control protocol or our dedicated control panels.
