Description and purpose of the course: General Education courses must be introductory and foundational. Introduction to basic research skills in music. Emphasis on listening for style and characteristics through representative recorded repertoire. Music 324 is a survey of Western art music from Ancient Greece through the end of the Baroque period. This course will introduce students to the various musical forms and styles associated with these eras in addition to the many historical roles music has played in society shaping, expressing, and reflecting important social, economic, and political ideas critical to the development of Western culture. Required in the music major: Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Arts IV. Criteria: Briefly explain how this course meets the criteria for the group. This course will introduce students to the various musical forms and styles associated with these eras in addition to the many historical roles music has played in society shaping, expressing, and reflecting important social, economic, and political ideas critical to the development of Western culture. 1) Students will gain an understanding of the important cultural and social movements and institutions that shaped the development of Western art music prior to 1750. 2) Students will develop critical listening skills, including the ability to identify musical styles associated with specific time periods and composers, as well as an understanding of the many ways in which music communicates meaning. 3) Students will complete written assignments that foster the ability to think critically, learning to evaluate opinions and evidence and to express ideas effectively.
