El amor brujo is a feverish tale about a specter consumed with lust and cruelty. Each night, he forces a beautiful Gypsy girl his widow to dance with him. Can her Latin lover break the spell? Mahler s Exuberant Seventh Symphony NOV 9/11 Thu/Sat: 8pm SCHUMANN: Cello Concerto MAHLER: Symphony No. 7 Steven Isserlis, cello It was only 50 years ago that Gustav Mahler was all but forgotten. Today, he has one of the biggest and most ardent followings in all of classical music. Hear why when Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Music Director Robert Spano conducts the magnificent Seventh Symphony. Reaching the pinnacle of the Romantic symphony, the Seventh is bigger, grander, and more luxurious; and infused with heart-pounding energy. STUDENT TICKETS START AT $14 non-premium concerts only DONALD RUNNICLES The Mighty ASO Chorus and Verdi s Requiem NOV 16/18 Thu/Sat: 8pm VERDI: Requiem Donald Runnicles, conductor Erin Wall, soprano Jamie Barton, mezzo-soprano Dimitri Pittas, tenor Peter Rose, bass-baritone Verdi s Requiem offers the drama of opera, with four virtuoso solo voices and a massive chorus, combined with the thrill of wonderful symphonic writing. When poet and novelist Alessandro Manzoni died on May 22, 1873, Verdi was too grief-stricken to attend his funeral. To honor his passing, Verdi composed a memorial in the form of a requiem, which was performed on the first anniversary of Manzoni s death. In the Requiem, Verdi s gifts are on full display -- his fervent quest to describe redemption combined with his compositional genius throughout the piece result in true magic. DAVID COUCHERON Leonard Bernstein and the Beethoven Seventh JAN 11/13 Thu/Sat: 8pm BERNSTEIN: Fancy Free (complete ballet) SAINT-SAËNS: Violin Concerto No. 3 BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 7 Peter Oundjian, conductor David Coucheron, violin Ludwig van Beethoven and Leonard Bernstein were lifelong champions of two things: music and liberty. JORGE FEDERICO OSORIO Beethoven s Emperor Concerto JAN 25/27 Thu/Sat: 8pm MICHAEL KURTH: Everything Lasts Forever BERNSTEIN: Symphony No. 1, Jeremiah BEETHOVEN: Piano Concerto No. 5, Emperor Jennifer Johnson Cano, mezzo-soprano It was a publisher who decided to title Beethoven s E-flat concerto Emperor, but it surely fits. Majestic, striding, and tender, the Fifth Piano Concerto is not only a crowning achievement among Beethoven s compositions, but among all the piano concertos written before or since. Beethoven s Second and Third Piano Concertos FEB 1/3 Thu/Sat: 8pm BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 1 BEETHOVEN: Piano Concerto No. 2 BEETHOVEN: Piano Concerto No. 3 The piano as we know it was invented around 1700 by an Italian named Bartolomeo Cristofori. It would be decades before it really caught on. Of the great composers, the first to cut his teeth on the modern instrument was the child prodigy Beethoven. Unlike the harpsichord, the piano can be lyrical, dramatic, loud and soft; it demanded a new, more expressive kind of music. As a powerful young pianist who was out to impress, Beethoven also demanded a new kind of music. Thus, he produced the Second and Third Piano Concertos. The Exquisite Mozart Requiem * FEB 8/10/11 Thu/Sat: 8pm/Sun: 3pm BEETHOVEN: Piano Concerto No. 1 MOZART: Requiem Roberto Abbado, conductor Jessica Rivera, soprano Magdalena Wór, mezzo-soprano William Burden, tenor Tom McNichols, bass Who can forget that scene in Amadeus when the genius Mozart lay on his deathbed, racing against time to complete his final opus - a mass for the dead. And just to make the whole episode even more eerie, the piece was commissioned by a mysterious stranger Mozart never met! ROBERT MCDUFFIE Beethoven and Heroism in the Eroica Symphony APR 5/6 Thu/Fri: 8pm MICHAEL KURTH: May Cause Dizziness BERNSTEIN: Serenade (after Plato s Symposium ) BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 3, Eroica Robert McDuffie, violin In 1803, Beethoven, an ardent champion of Liberty and Brotherhood of Man, felt so invigorated by Napoleon s victory over tyranny, he invented a new kind of music: more expansive, more thrilling, more heroic. But then Napoleon crowned himself emperor. Beethoven was crushed. He removed Bonaparte from the title page of his Third Symphony and gave to humanity this majestic essay on freedom. A mountain of a piece for the solo violinist, the Tchaikovsky combines sweetness with bravado and soaring melodies. Without a doubt, she is the most complete, perfect, and intelligent interpreter of her instrument so far in the 21st century (El Mundo). Guest conductor Christian Arming leads the and welcomes composer/pianist Conrad Tao, the 23-year-old YouTube, Tumblr and Twitter sensation, and one of the most exciting players of his generation.
