When poet and novelist Alessandro Manzoni died on May 22, 1873, Verdi was too grief-stricken to attend his funeral. To honor his passing, Verdi composed a memorial in the form of a requiem, which was performed on the first anniversary of Manzoni s death. In the Requiem, Verdi s gifts are on full display -- his fervent quest to describe redemption combined with his compositional genius throughout the piece result in true magic. Majestic, striding, and tender, the Fifth Piano Concerto is not only a crowning achievement among Beethoven s compositions, but among all the piano concertos written before or since. It would be decades before it really caught on. Of the great composers, the first to cut his teeth on the modern instrument was the child prodigy Beethoven. Unlike the harpsichord, the piano can be lyrical, dramatic, loud and soft; it demanded a new, more expressive kind of music. As a powerful young pianist who was out to impress, Beethoven also demanded a new kind of music. Thus, he produced the Second and Third Piano Concertos.
