A Season of Music First Presbyterian Church of Naples You will find an envelope to return with your support for A Season of Music at First Presbyterian Church. It is only through the generosity of people who love and support music that our church is able to provide such fine music that benefits both our church and the greater Naples community. Please consider sending a donation today. If you are interested in underwriting one of our concerts, please contact me at the church. I hope you will be inspired to come hear many of the concerts during the 2013-2014 season. It is only through your help that we can provide these outstanding musical offerings. Thank you in advance for your support and generosity. Dr. Brice Gerlach Director of Music Ministries I am proud to announce the exciting concert series at First Presbyterian Church. It s time for another Season of Music! Within this brochure you will find the schedule of concerts. It is my hope that you will plan on coming to these special events and consider bringing your friends and family to see our beautiful church and hear the inspiring music within its walls. Highlights of the season include two concerts that feature our magnificent Ruffatti organ, as well as three visiting choirs. Also featured will be two special musical events led by our wonderful Chancel Choir. The first is a service of Lessons and Carols celebrating the story and music of Christmas and the second is a choir concert featuring Fauré s Requiem.

A Trio of Friends James Cochran, Michele Byrd and Brice Gerlach Sunday, October 27, 2013 Philharmonic Youth Chorus James Cochran, Director Brice Gerlach, Assistant Director Sunday, November 24, 2013 The Philharmonic Youth Chorus is an auditioned choir of children ranging from 6 to 18 years of age. They rehearse weekly and perform annually at Holiday Pops and their Spring Recital at Artis Naples. They also sing for community events and in concerts around the Naples area. They are the best young singers in our community. Our Director of Music, Brice Gerlach and his wife, Michele Byrd, combine talents with James Cochran for an exciting afternoon of keyboard and vocal music. You won t want to miss this event! In addition to the magnificent Ruffatti pipe organ, Brice and Jim will be playing a Rodgers digital organ as well as the Blüthner grand piano. Three keyboards, three friends in concert. The program will include baroque gems, opera classics, jazz standards and some spooky Halloween music! The Phantom of the Opera may make an appearance as well as Brice and Michele s son, Colin, a boy soprano soloist. The trio of friends from our first concert are the directors of this group. James Cochran is the Director, Brice Gerlach is the Assistant Director and Michele Byrd is the Singing-Skills Instructor. They work together to bring out the best in these musical children. This concert will feature folk songs, patriotic music, Disney classics and holiday tunes to get you in the mood for Christmas. You will be amazed at the talent these young people possess. They are truly exceptional! Plan on attending this concert. It promises to have beautiful music performed by the best of friends.

A Service of Lessons and Carols with the Chancel Choir Sunday, December 8, 2013 The service of Lessons and Carols follows the traditional pattern of prayers, lessons and music made popular by King s College in Cambridge, England. Once again we enter into the well-known story of Christmas and are invited to hear the song of the angels, share in the wonder of the shepherds and resolve to be as persistent as the magi. Experience the hope and joy of rediscovering the miracle and wonder of Christmas as told through beautiful readings and cherished music of the season. Sing some of your favorite traditional carols such as O Come, All Ye Faithful, Hark! the Herald Angels Sing and Silent Night. The choir will present special Christmas anthems by living composers. American composers will be strongly represented with Morten Lauridsen s O Magnum Mysterium, Dan Forrest s A Christmas Lullaby, and Daniel Kantor s Night of Silence. Also featured will be two anthems by Phillip Stopford, a young British composer; A Christmas Blessing and A Child is Born in Bethlehem. Come and remember the reason for the season! Mark your calendar now for this yuletide afternoon. Anton s Ensemble Soirée Sunday, January 26, 2014 Founded in Europe as a group of internationally acclaimed concert musicians, Anton s Ensemble Soirée offers a wonderful selection of exquisite music generally known as salon music -- spanning centuries of musical style from Viennese melodies, light classical and operetta to Broadway musicals and jazz standards. This captivating music encompasses the lighter side of melody and it flourished in the elegant coffee houses and private residences frequented by European society throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Led by violinist Anton Sikuta, former concertmaster of the State Opera Orchestra, Darmstadt, Germany and of the Johann Strauss Orchestra, Wiesbaden, Anton s Ensemble Soirée is dedicated to preserving this wonderful salon music tradition and to introducing these delightful tunes to the ears of new audiences in Florida. In addition to presenting the works of Kreisler, Gershwin, Strauss and other wellknown composers, the Ensemble is constantly striving to seek out arrangements of melodic compositions of lesser known but equally talented artists which have long disappeared from modern publishing houses. Come, relax and be entertained with Anton s Ensemble Soirée!

Hector Olivera, organ Sunday, February 9, 2014 Hector Olivera is a passionate, gifted, and unique musician, whose personal interpretations of both classical and popular music have amazed and delighted audiences around the world. He has performed as guest soloist with many orchestras, including the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Fort Wayne Symphony, the Dover-New Philadelphia Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Amsterdam Baroque Ensemble, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Pasadena Symphony (for whom he produced a limited Gold CD edition of Saint Saëns' Symphony No. 3). Although he is most famous for his prodigious technical proficiency, Hector Olivera s amazing effect on audiences has made many of the most sophisticated and demanding organ aficionados claim that Hector Olivera is one of the greatest organists in the world today. You won t want to miss this concert! Butler University Chorale Eric Stark, Director Monday, March 10, 2014 7:00 p.m. The Butler University Chorale is the premier choral organization of the Jordan College of the Arts. The Chorale's membership is made up of graduate and undergraduate students from a variety of professional academic disciplines in music including music education, performance, and arts administration. The Chorale has a long history of excellence and has toured through much of the continental United States, Mexico and Europe, including a 1992 tour to Austria and Italy, a 1995 tour to the Czech Republic and France, and a 1998 tour to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. Major concert appearances have included engagements with the National Chamber Orchestra of Mexico, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and such venues as Canterbury Cathedral, Saint Francis Church in Salzburg, Notre Dame in Paris, Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City and Saints John and Paul Church in Venice. Tonight s concert will be part of their spring tour of Florida. You will love hearing these musicians sing!

Chancel Choir Concert Michele Byrd, soprano Todd Donovan, baritone Sunday, March 16, 2014 Florida Gulf Coast University Chamber Choir Trent Brown, Director Sunday, March 30, 2014 The incredible Chancel Choir of First Presbyterian Church will be featured in this Spring concert. They will perform Gabriel Fauré s hauntingly beautiful Requiem joined by guest soloists, Michele Byrd and Todd Donovan. Fauré s masterpiece is a work of peacefulness and serenity focused on comfort for the living and eternal rest for the departed. It has been described as a requiem without the Last Judgment. Come and enjoy this sacred gem! You will be moved by its ethereal beauty. The Bower School of Music Chamber Choir is a mixed, auditioned ensemble open to all students regardless of major at FGCU. The ensemble was featured in 2013 at the Florida Music Educators Association (FMEA) Conference and in March in a collaborative performance of Mendelssohn s Elijah with Opera Naples. This year the ensemble will perform in Austria and the Czech Republic. Their concert will include music of Viennese composers, as well as beautiful a cappella repertoire of the American choral tradition. This special concert will help raise money for their upcoming tour of Europe.

Lenten Noontime Organ Recitals Wednesdays, March 12, March 19, March 26, April 2, April 9 and April 16, 2014 12:00-12:30 p.m. The spectacular Ruffatti pipe organ is featured in six Lenten organ recitals offered by our Director of Music, Brice Gerlach. In these informal concerts Brice takes the time to explain some of the mechanical workings of the organ and offers some musical insights about the pieces on the program. Each concert opens with a piece that highlights the magnificent horizontal trumpets protruding from the front of the organ case. A work by J. S. Bach is always featured and arrangements of Lenten hymn tunes are presented, allowing for some of the diverse solo stops and softer sounds of the organ to be heard. The concerts will end with a rousing toccata, allowing the audience to hear the full power of the organ. After the recital, the audience is invited up to the console to ask questions and to see the beautiful woodwork and craftsmanship of the Ruffatti. Tours of the pipe chambers are also offered each week. Come hear beautiful organ music during Lent. Don't miss these special opportunities for personal reflection, meditation, and celebration of this holy season.
