Section 1 General Information Scope of this Manal This manal gives yo the information necessary to install, operate, and perform rotine maintenance on the Model TBC SYNC+ Digital Video Time Base Corrector and Synchronizer, manfactred by Prime Image, inc. Manal Improvements Changes to this manal are docmented by nmbered engineering change orders. Individal sers of this manal are encoraged to report any errors, omissions, or sggestions for improvement to the following address: Proprietary Information Pblications Department Prime Image, inc. 19943 Via Escela Saratoga, CA 95070 The information in this manal is frnished solely for the prpose of providing instrctions for installation and operation of the eqipment described herein. Any other se of this information withot the written consent of Prime Image, inc. is strictly prohibited. Section 1.1 Prodct Description This section describes. the featres and fnction of the TBC SYNC+ System. Featres The TBC SYNC+ System is a high performance digital video time base corrector (TBC) with advanced video tape prodction capabilities for demanding professional reqirements. The TBC SYNC+ contains a fll complement of processing fnctions sing a component video format internally. The System has the featres and operating modes cstomarily provided in high qality TBCs inclding compatibility with dynamic tracking VCRs, 3.58 feedback, and Drop-Ot Corrector (DOC). The TBC SYNC-1+ model also featres. a video synchronizer for freeze frame capabilities. Video "special effect" featres enhance the seflness of the TBC SYNC+ System: TBC SYNC+ 0{!)erators Manal! 5

Section 1 Genelia/ 1 lnformati0n Otpt video is qantized into discrete levels, prodcing a coarse grained or contored effect. Qantization severity, controlled by the clockwise rotation of the control, affects the lminance. To activate this featre, pll ot the posterization knob. Sepia Mosaic Otpt is converted from a fll color image to a brown-toned representation. To activate this featre, pll ot the sepia knob. Otpt is qantized spatially in rectanglar pattern with an adjstable block size. To activate this featre, pll ot the mosaic knob. These special effect fnctions may be sed separately or may be combined to prodce a wide range of effects that enhance the visal interest of a seqence or still. In addition to improving the time base stability of the video playback, the TBC SYNC+ provides a convenient means for correcting other parameters. of the video that may be incorrect. Front panel controls allow adjstment of Video level, Set-p level, Chroma level, He, Strobe and Freeze. These parameters may be changed by plling ot the appropriate knob and rotating to the desired level. For a description of Strobe and Freeze adjstments, see the section "Video Synchronizer"' on page 7. (. \ Fnction The TBC SYNC+ Digital Video Time Base Corrector and Synchronizer is sed to correct the timing of a signal from a video tape recorder to the level of stability reqired for broadcast or for clean editing. The TBC SYNC+ provides timing correction by digitizing the video, storing p to 525 horizontal lines worth of information, and recalling the stored data at a stable rate. Before digitization, the inpt video is. separated into its lma and chroma components. Digitization to 8-bit precision allows 1 part in 256 or.4 IRE maximm resoltion in lma and.4% maximm of chroma satration. The digitization process occrs at greater than 8 MHz for lma and at greater than 4 MHz for chroma. This speed allows retention of the spectral components in the pictre below the chrominance information as. well as excellent color performance. After recall from the RAM memory, the digital video is reconverted to analog components and recombined with clean sync, blanking, and brst from the sync generator to form a composite video signal. The TBC SYNC+ contains an internal sync generator that may be sed as the reference sync or may in trn be "genlocked" to an external reference. TBC SYNC+ Opeliatolis Manal 6

U Drop-Ot Corrector Sectiom 1 Gemeral lnformati0m The TBC SYNC+ provides Drop-Ot Corrector (DOC) by monitoring the RF from the recorder. When a drop-ot is detected, the memory data is flagged as being of qestionable qality and is replaced with video recorded from the previos line. Video Synchronizer The original fll-frame video synchronizer was. developed for se at E.N.G. and Sports events. Its prpose was to synchronize a non-synchronos signal, typically microwave transmitted, to a reference signal or to another non-synchronos signal. The characteristics of a fll-frame video synchronizer mandated fll-frame (525-line) memory capabilities. Once the synchronizer was developed, it qickly made its way from the "on location"' broadcasting vans into post-prodction hoses. There it became a handy tool for freeze frame/freeze field applications and a way to synchronize two non-v-locked VCRs. Throgh advanced technology Prime Image, inc. has developed a video synchronizer that gives yo clean "hot switching" and reliable operation when coming ot of an "ato freeze." In addition to improved hot switching, the TBC SYNC+ allows yo to freeze frame, freeze field "l," or freeze field "2."i It also incldes a variable field strobe and frame strobe mode. All of these featres will work concrrently with the special effect controls. Freeze Frame Fll frame memory lets yo freeze a desired frame. Once a frame of memory is stored in RAM, Field "'1" or Field "2" may be chosen. Freeze Field 1 Freeze Field 2 Frame Strobe Field Strobe In an action shot, if the otpt video is jittery de to Field 1 vs. Field 2 differences, it may be necessary to select a field freeze. Select Field 1 or Field 2. Strobes otpt video one frame at a time. Frame strobe rates are adjstable by sing the strobe pot on the front panel. Strobes otpt video one field at a time. Field strobe rates are adjstable by sing the strobe pot on the front panel. All of the above fnctions are activated by plling ot on the strobe potentiometer (pot). TBC SYNC+ OperatOfiS Manal 7

Q Section 1.2 Applications Secti0m 1 General /nformati0m The TBC SYNC+ is intended to be sed with a V-locked or non-v-locked VCR, microwave, off air, or other non-synchronos feed. It operates on the video to stabilize the timing and provide both horizontal and color lock to the reference sync signal. The otpt may be switched or mixed with other sorces. Each of the three video effect controls (Poster, Sepia, and Mosaic) operate when activated. Pll ot to activate; psh in to trn off. In this configration the operating specs may be verified except residal error. 5. Place the recorder in PLAY and verify the following: a. The otpt video is. time base corrected. b. A properly framed pictre is displayed on the monitor. In this configration the DOC and dynamic tracking capabilities of the TBC SYNC+ may be demonstrated. If the factory preset levels for the video controls. are not proper or if yo wish to adjµst the systems timing for yor installation, refer to Section 5.1. Section 4.3 Operating Modes This section describes the settings for the varios operating modes. Power OFF: In this mode the signal present at Video In connector 113 is directly connected to Video Ot 1 connector J 12. Power ON: In this mode the AC inpt is connected, the AC power switch is ON, and the Bypass switch Sl is ON. The Video Ot 1 connector 112 carries inpt video from 113, bt the Video Otpt 2 connector Jl l contains a corrected version of the inpt video. In this mode at least one front panel indicator will be ON. TBC SYN<C + Oper:ator:s Mar:w1a/! 16

U Normal Color, Genloc: Section 4 Operati.om In this mode AC switch is. ON, the Bypass switch is OFF, and at least one indicator is lit. In this mode all controls are active and the TBC SYNC+ is. correcting video. Operation of the TBC SYNC+ is flly atomatic and will tolerate hot switches of the inpt with fll correction established within one frame time. In the normal operating mode, the TBC SYNC+ may free-rn on its. internal sync generator or lock to an external reference inpt at connector 15/16. Ifa reference inpt is detected, the TBC SYNC+ will phase-lock to signal, and the Genloc indicator 14 will be ON. The otpt, when genlocked, is RS-170A compatible and factory-set to the correct sync-brst phase relationship. The sync and brst phase may be adjsted manally sing the front panel controls (H<t> SCcp), if desired. U Section 4.4 Synchronization The TBC SYNC+ receives a non-synchronos video signal via the "Video In" connector 113 on the rear panel. The video information is separated into its component format and then digitized. This non-synchronos. information is written into RAM, one line at a time. Once a known good field (262~ lines) is stored in RAM, it is read ot of RAM, constrcted back into an analog signal, and otptted throgh the Video Ot 1 and 2jacks.112 and 111. Synchronization occrs becase the read clock is generated, in part, by a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) whose freqency is determined by se of an external Genloc sorce inptted to 15 or 16, or by se of an internal sync generator chip. If a bad field is. written into RAM, the TBC SYNC+ will detect it and contine reading (otptting) the last known good field. This. is known as an ato freeze. Once a good field is written into RAM, the TBC SYNC+ de-activates itself from the ato freeze mode and begins the continos read/write cycle ntil the next bad field occrs. Ato freeze may be de-activated by switching S3 to the OFF position. TBC SYNC+ Operrators Manal 17

C' Defining Bad Field Section 4 Operatiom The TBC SYNC+ monitors the inpt video signal and ato freeze nder for conditions: Horizontal Line Detect: If the TBC SYNC+ does not detect a horizontal sync plse within lines of the last known good H. sync plse, the TBC SYNC+ will ato freeze. Loss of inpt video or excessive skewing are examples of how the H. sync detection circitry will go into ato freeze mode. Missing Vertical Sync: If a vertical sync plse is missing dring any field, the TBC SYNC+ considers this a bad field and will ato freeze. As with the horizontal line detect circitry, the loss of inpt video will activate the missing vertical sync detection circitry and send the TBC SYNC-+r into an ato freeze mode. Incorrect Vertical Sync: By definition, vertical sync occrs every 16.3 milliseconds, switching between even and odd fields. The TBC SYNC+ monitors the incoming video signal and detects both the position (timing) of vertical sync as well as field identification (even/odd). A tape that has incorrectly edited video on it might contain a segment whose fields read even, odd, even, odd... The detection of the two repeating fields will case an ato freeze. Tape Head Switch Mask: Ten lines of video are masked dring each field. This is U done so that horizontal line detect circitry does not ato freeze. De-activating Ato Freeze (A Fr) Fnctions Yoar new TBC SYNC+ has been set at the factory to ato freeze dring any of the for previosly mentioned conditions. It may be desirable to de~activate any one or all of the incorrect video detection circits. This may be accomplished by following these instrctions: Remove the six screws that secre the top cover to the TBC SYNC+. Inside yo will see two Printed Circit Boards (PCBs). The bottom PCB is the TBC. The top board is the synchronizer, on which yo will notice a for-position DIP switch. To disable an ato freeze fnction, simply switch the desired switch to the OFF position. Sl S2 H. Line Detect Missing V Sync S3 S4 Head Switch Mask Incorrect V Sync Once the desired changes have been made, re-secre the nit's. top cover. Never operate the TBC SYNC+ withot a top cover for a prolonged period of time. A master ato freeze (A Fr) disable switch is located on the rear of the TBC SYNC+. If yo are sing the shttle mode of a VCR, this switch shold be in the ON (p) position. If this switch is OFF, the TBC SYNC+ will ato freeze dring shttle operations. TBC SYNC+ Operators Man&al 18

( \ \._) Section 5 Alignment This sectfon provides the information necessary to adjst the preset controls to yor exact system reqirements and to allow correction of possible drift in factory settings as the eqipment ages. We recommend adjstments be made by qalified service personnel. In no case shold yo remove the cover and attempt these adjstments withot first completely familiarizing yorself with the system and observing the reasonable safety reqirements inherent in this electronic device. Failre to exercise care may reslt in the voidance of the eqipment warranty and is entirely the responsibility of the operator. Section 5.1 Installation Adjstment The TBC SYNC+ is preset at the factory to normalized vales for all controls and shm1ld be very close to optimm for most applications. If, however, in operation one or more controls needs to be set manally, the internal preset controls may be adjsted to compensate for yor system. The following table lists the controls and their locations. Table 5-1. Internal Preset Controls 1 Video Level Yes R53 Right of manal pot R87 Right rear of manal pot... Sectiom 5 Aligmment1 U The following procedre describes the steps necessary to make internal control adjstments. 1. Allow the TBC SYNC+ to warm-p and stabilize itsinternal temperatre for at least 10 mintes before proceeding. 2. Remove the six screws secring the case top. 3. Refer to the adjstment location drawing (Figre 5-1) to determine the physical location of the desired pot. 4. Psh the reqired ~ob IN to enable the preset mode. 5. Remove the case. top and with a small, inslated adjstment tool make the adjstment reqired. Note Do not leave the case top off for any longer than necessary to complete the adjstment. The top is essential for providing proper air flow to the TBC SYNC+ circitry. Removal of the top will destabilize the temperatre and expose the operator to nshroded fan blades and 117 VAC wiring. 6. Replace the case top and secre with six screws. TBC SYNC+ Opefiatofis Manal 20

Section 6 Servicing This. section gives. yo information abot maintaining yor TBC SYNC+ System, obtaining service, and trobleshooting. Rotine Maintenance The TBC SYNC+ System is inherently a low maintenance nit that reqires only a periodic dsting internally, when sed in an nfiltered environment. The fan is a sealed bearing, brshless DC nit that shold be replaced every 5 years. of continos dty operation. Unit Malfnction All TBC SYNC+ systems are designed and tested to perform as otlined previosly in this manal. The manfactrer does not assme any responsibility for damage or malfnction reslting from operation of this nit otside the pblished environmental or interface specifications, or improper operation reslting from cstom interfacing or any nathorized internal modification. If yo enconter a malfnction dring the warranty period, call yor dealer or or Cstomer Service Department at the factory to arrange for service. DO NOT attempt to service this nit dring the warranty period; to do so will void the warranty., Yo may have ot-of-warranty prodcts repaired by yor dealer or athorized repair facility. Service Calls If yo call for service, give the following information abot yor nit. It will help yor dealer in diagl)osis and repair: 1. The model and serial nmber of yor nit. 2. The system configration (inclding VCR types). 3. The problem yo are having and the specific effect on the pictre. TBC SYN([;+ Operato/is Manal 22
