I will be able to define and identify Response to Literature Writing and its major components: 1. Details 2. Elaborations /Opinions

What is a Response to Literature?

Response = A verbal or written reaction to something

Literature = Creative writing, especially of recognized artistic value

The way in which students react to texts through writing. Writing that demonstrates an understanding and appreciation for the text.

How can you tell that the excerpt below is a Response to Literature? In Gary Soto s short story, The No- Guitar Blues, the main character, a teenage boy named Fausto, takes advantage of some rich folks. As a result, he is consumed by guilt. The story shows that deep down, people want to do the right thing.

1. Read each excerpt 2.Write YES on the line if the excerpt is an example of a Response to Literature and NO if it isn t

1. One main theme in Cinderella is optimism. Since Cinderella is an orphan, she lives with her evil stepmother and stepsisters. They force her to manage an incredible amount of difficult chores. Additionally, they treat her horribly. Because the stepmother does not want Cinderella to attend the ball, she gives her a huge list of difficult chores. Still, Cinderella does not complain and maintains a positive attitude. She hopes to finish her chores so that she can go to the ball. Most would give up hope, but Cinderella continues to be optimistic that if she is obedient and kind, good things will come her way.

2. The jury at Durham Crown Court announced their verdict at the end of the trial of A. Wolf (he prefers to be FONDLY known as Al). Al was found guilty of the harassment of the Three Little Pigs As the verdict was announced an intense cheer echoed around the courtroom. Oinks of sheer delight were shared by many. The prosecution team, led by Piggy Parker, were delighted by the result. Miss Parker declared, "At last justice has been exercised! The innocent, harmless pigs won the day. The scoundrel, Al, will now be punished for his unscrupulous, wolfish behavior. "Revenge is sweet," snorted Miss Pig, with glee!

What should Response to Literature writing include?

Types of Details Direct Quotation Exact words from the short story Paraphrase A restatement of all the author s ideas in your own words Summary A condensed restatement of the author s most important ideas

Which type of Detail from the text is being used in the excerpt below? Soto uses idioms to illustrate that Fausto s family does not have a lot of money. For example, Fausto worries that if he asks for a guitar, his parents will say, Money doesn t grow on trees, or What do you think we are, bankers? (56). When he does ask for a guitar, his mother replies, Honey, a guitar costs a lot of money... but we ll see (57).

1. Read each excerpt 2. On the line provided, identify which type of Detail from the text is being used in the excerpt

1. The scene begins with two men named George and Lennie. One man is big, one man is small. Lennie is thirsty, so he drinks some water from the river. George gets mad at him. 2. Two men appear, walking one behind the other. The first man is small, dark and quick. The other man, his exact opposite, is described as huge and pale. The large man, Lennie, drops to the ground and drinks the river water in large gulps. The smaller man, George, reminds him that the water might make him sick. George then tastes the water and agrees that it seems all right, but he still warns Lennie that he should never drink water if it is not running.

Elaborations Clarifications regarding your choice of details from the text

Opinions A view or judgment formed about the details from the text

The narrator describes the flowers around his childhood home as rotting brown magnolia petals and graveyard flowers. This description refers to the aspects of nature with words that remind the reader of death. Hurst is creating an atmosphere of approaching tragedy.

1. When Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time at the ball, Romeo is immediately smitten with Juliet. When he says, If I profane with my unworthiest hand, he is telling Juliet how much he wants to touch her. 2. George and Lennie, like every other American, wanted to have a place where they felt secure, and a place where they could relax, after work. Lennie s dream is for George and himself to own a farm; a place that they could call their own. Let s have different colour rabbits George, sure we will, George said sleepily. Red and blue and green rabbits, Lennie. Millions of em.
