Print Collection & Borrowing Rights
Trinity College Library Dublin is a legal deposit library it s entitled to request a copy of every book and journal published in the UK and Ireland when it is printed. These and items we purchase are divided into: Open Shelf: books available to read in the Library. This collection is sub-divided into: Undergraduate Lending Collection Open Access Staff and Postgraduate Lending Collection (mainly Legal Deposit material) Reference Collection Counter Reserve Collection Closed Access: books held in storage - in stacks on campus or in a large book repository in the Dublin suburb of Santry
Undergraduate and Diploma Lending: up to 4 items in total at any one time from: Berkeley, Lecky, Ussher (BLU) Libraries LEN (with Yellow Sticker) one-week loan LEN (no Yellow Sticker) four-week loan MUS LEN one-week loan Plus up to an additional four P-MUS LEN four-week loan Hamilton Library S-LEN one-week loan John Stearne Medical Library SJ one-week loan
Higher Degree Postgraduate Students Up to 10 items in total at any one time Normally from Open Access or Closed Access 4 items from the Undergraduate Lending Collection (if all other Open Access or Closed Access copies are on loan Students Registered with Disability Services Up to 8 items in total, including material from Open Access and Closed Access May include 4 items from the Undergraduate Lending Collection Staff Up to 20 items in total from Open Access and Closed Access Further details are available from: http://www.tcd.ie/library/using-library/borrowing/
Open Access Collection Undergraduates cannot borrow this material but can use the books in the Library for study or research If an Open Access copy is on loan and there are no lending copies available you can ask for the item to be recalled. Counter Reserve Located by the counters in the Iveagh Hall (Berkeley Library), Hamilton Library and John Stearne Medical Library (JSML) Material: Multiple copies of books in heavy demand Lecture notes Other materials deposited by lecturers Material cannot be removed from the Library You may borrow up to 4 items Five-hour loan period Books must be returned at the Counter (the book return box may only be used when the Counter is closed) Heavy fines for overdue items 25 cent per hour or part of an hour
Borrowing Books You need a valid TCD ID card to borrow books FastLane Self-Service: use to borrow, renew and return Open Shelf books (see next slide for more information) Service Counters: use to borrow, renew and return books, including Counter Reserve items. Closed Access items are also issued here Fines: Standard Fines: 50 cent per day, per item, rising to 1 per day after two weeks. Counter Reserve Fines: 25 cent per hour
FastLane Self-Service Machines Books may be borrowed and returned here (except Counter Reserve items) You may only check out books in accordance with your borrowing entitlements You may be prevented from borrowing if you owe fines or have overdue books Take care to follow instructions on screen
Requesting material from Closed Access (Stacks and Santry Book Repository)
Closed Access 80% of the Library s print collection is stored in Stacks and in the Santry Book Repository Material is requested online or, if it is a journal (or some earlier printed books) by completing a call slip Online requests from Stacks are delivered to your choice of Library Counter, usually on the same day Online requests from Santry are usually delivered the next day No more than five requests can be ongoing per reader Material is held in the Library for three days to be collected Undergraduates must read this material in the Library When finished with the material, return it via FastLane and place it in the book return box beside the machines as instructed, or if you wish to use it again come to the Counter and we will keep it for you
Online Requests Books are ordered from Closed Access via Stella Search
Call Slips Some Closed Access materials can only be requested using call slips. The main categories are journals and some early printed books; nearly all other items can now be requested using Stella Search online

Renewing books online
You will be unable to renew a Library book if: You have outstanding fines above 15 your Library Account will show you fees owing, and calculate what you owe if you have overdue books You have exceeded the amount of renewals permitted: 4-week loans can be renewed once only 1-week loans can be renewed a maximum of 7 times Books cannot be renewed by phone or e-mail Online renewing - books are due back before the time the Library starts to close on the assigned date and not midnight on that date (so, in term, before 21:45 Mon-Fri and before 15:45 on Sat) If you have problems renewing contact the Duty Librarian or Service Counter staff in person
If all lending copies of a book are currently on loan, you can place a reservation through Stella Search You will be unable to reserve a Library book if: You have outstanding fines above 15 your Library Account will show you fees owing, and calculate what you owe if you have overdue books There are lending copies available You are trying to reserve material you are not entitled to borrow Books cannot be reserved by phone or e-mail If you have problems reserving, contact the Duty Librarian or Service Counter staff in person
