Chicago a cappella apprentices gain valuable skills to further their musical ambitions, including how to rehearse collaboratively, how to sing at a high level in a small self-directed a cappella ensemble, and how such activities are supported behind the scenes by professional arts administrators and volunteers. The apprentices meet regularly and rehearse as an ensemble, attend Chicago a cappella rehearsals, receive mentorship and guidance from our artists and administrative staff, assist at concerts, and perform as an Apprentice Ensemble, both on their own and with Chicago a cappella. Application and Audition Process Eligible applicants must be rising high school sophomores, juniors or seniors. 1. Contact Chicago a cappella by Thursday, May 17, 2018, to secure an audition spot. Auditions spots are limited and will fill quickly. Contact Ace Gangoso, HSAP Director, via email at agangoso@chicagoacappella.org to request an audition. 2. Complete application form, including signatures from a parent/guardian and a current school/community/religious choir director. 3. Attend the audition on Sunday, May 20, 2018, from 3-6 PM in Polk Hall at the Merit School of Music, 38 S. Peoria St. in Chicago. Applicants must plan to stay for the full three-hour audition time. Each applicant will sing a short a cappella song of their choosing (Amazing Grace, My Country Tis Of Thee, America The Beautiful, traditional folk song or spiritual, current pop standard, etc.). In addition, applicants will sing Fine Knacks for Ladies by John Dowland (attached to application) in a small ensemble with other applicants. Applicants should learn and prepare the voice part(s) for which they wish to be considered. All auditioning applicants will receive a free ticket to an upcoming Chicago a cappella concert! Four to eight apprentices will be chosen to serve from September 2018 through May 2019. There is a one-time administrative fee of $100 upon enrollment in the program; no other fees will be charged during participation in the program. Scholarships are available. Musical Skills and Performance Opportunities Apprentices will form their own a cappella ensemble, will rehearse and perform Chicago a cappella repertoire, and will be directed by Chicago a cappella s professional Artists. The Apprentice Ensemble will be featured on stage with Chicago a cappella at the Youth Choral Festival (December 2018) and the Chicago a cappella Gala (May 2019). Other performance opportunities may be scheduled. Rehearsals will be scheduled twice monthly on Monday evenings. Attendance is vital to participation.

Chicago a cappella High School Apprenticeship Information Letter, page 2 Rehearsal Skills and Professional Mentorship Apprentices will learn how to rehearse collaboratively and sing together as a self-conducted ensemble, and will learn from professionals by observing Chicago a cappella rehearsals. They will also receive mentorship on a variety of topics, including vocal technique, audition technique, vocal percussion, and concert programming. Apprentices will also learn about options for continuing a professional/amateur life in music beyond high school, including information about careers in vocal music, music publishing, radio/pop music, and how to start a musical ensemble of their own. Administrative Skills Apprentices will assist our staff during four Chicago a cappella series concerts, receiving training from our concert manager. In addition they will attend 2-3 sessions in the organization s administrative office, learning about the business side of a career in music. Topics to be explored include fundraising, marketing, concert production and community engagement. Questions? Ready to audition?? Want to join us on stage???
